Hij is gisteren op de Rockacademie aan het werk geweest met onze studenten Songwriting. Heel inspirerend.
Vanuit het idee een song te schrijven naar aanleiding van bijvoorbeeld een gedicht leidde hij de zoektocht naar de essentie van het verhaal en hoe dat het best te vertalen was naar sfeer, ritme, bruikbare stukken tekst en uiteindelijk melodie.
Vandaag krijgen we resultaten die studenten presenteren naar aanleiding van een opdracht.
Gino was erg onder de indruk van het nivo en flexibiliteit van onze studenten.
Hij blijkt ook geweldig piano en gitaar te spelen. Om voorbeelden te illustreren pakte hij regelmatig de gitaar of dook hij achter de piano en zong hij stukken uit eigen songs of songs van anderen. Kippenvel!! Wat een stem!! De korte soundcheck met maar een paar mensen in de ruimte voelde als een privé-concertje.
Gisteren avond zijn we gezellig wat gaan eten en hebben we wat gekletst.
Deze week kan voor mij niet meer stuk. Een droom die uitgekomen is.

What a great Man Gino is...
Yesterday, Thursday 23 November 2006, Thanksgiving Day in the USA, Gino was working and teaching our students "songwriting" at the Rockacademie in Tilburg, Holland.
Very, very inspiring!
From the idea to write a song, referring for example to a poem, He led the search to the essence of the story and what's the best way or road to sphere, rhythm, useful text end at the end the melody.
Today we get to see the results of an assignment Gino gave them. The students present today these results referring to this homework.
Gino was very impressed by the level and flexibility of our students.
He also showed us how fantastic and great He plays the guitar and the piano.
To illustrate examples He gripped the guitar many times or He jumped behind the piano and sang parts and pieces from His own songs or from songs of other artists. GOOSE-BUMPS, CHICKEN-FLASH!!! WHAT A VOICE!!!
The short soundcheck with only a few people in the room felt like a little private concert.
Yesterday evening we went out for a cosy meal and we chattered.
A dream came true this week. This week was too beautiful to be true...

His creative urge is growing and growing, and His greediness for writing is beyond words and beyond understanding with our simple brains. The beatiful words come out of His mind, mouth and fingers like water from the tap... It looks like Gino is going to shoot in Philly for this comedy with some famous HOLLYWOOD PEOPLE LIKE Drew Barrymore, Susan Sarandon and the Husband of Demi moore... That makes it so great because many people on this planet will be able to see this movie... with The Master of Music: GINO VANNELLI and also hear Gino Vannelli's voice and music... YESSSSSSSSSSSSS there are 2 Gino Vannelli songs in this movie... this is such great and amazing news!!!
And to make your minds at ease again Gino looks great, healthy and happy, makes jokes and started singing suddenly once in a while... Gino's Wife was with us not live in person but live on the phone, soon Gino will go home for the holidays and for the love of His life!!!
We were total in shock when Gino suddenly started to sing and with shock we mean positive overwhelming shock the things we heard were just too amazing to realize at the moment we heard it.
All the beautiful words Gino wrote and created will come out somehow, in a song or in a poem or in a story or in music or in a vignette... so you all can hear and enjoy it one day... Be sure of that!!!

two top musicians together will give some fireworks and eats energy for sure but now there is a little rest from rehearsing because Michiel is touring in the USA and Gino Vannelli is teaching and writing in Holland... Most famous people like writers, actors and actresses, painters and other artistic people get inspired in Holland for their own art.... So it’s also possible that GINO VANNELI finds His inspiration in Holland or we better write the Netherlands.....
Gino is writing in Holland. Writing many words, beautiful poetic and artistic words which He writes in total freedom... Freedom which He needs to recreate Himself............
He writes poems, lyrics, songs, music and even more masterpieces........
He writes His novel, He re-writes His “FOOL” and tries to get a poetry book published in the future.... GINO VANNELLI works very close with Michiel Borstlap a top Dutch Musician, piano-player, composer and producer. They are preparing for some duo concerts next 2007 and probably in the spring they will have created a more than superb musical show. Like a Gino Vannelli songbook.

Born in Montreal in 1952, Vannelli started his first band when he was 12.
“We’re all held captive to our own subconscious credo,” says Vannelli, who sums up his life as a professional artist as continually being an “apostle” of himself.
If you haven’t heard Vannelli’s name in some time, it’s because his love for all music has taken him down some different roads in the past decade.
From his traditional jazz albums Yonder Tree and Slow Love, released in 1995 and ’97 respectively, to his stab at classical music in 2003, Canto, the man who made it big as a pop artist has by no means been lazy.
But now, after many years of exploring, Vannelli, best known for the hits I Just Wanna Stop, People Gotta Move and One Night With You, has returned to his pop roots.
“It was just time,” says Vannelli, whose latest CD, These are the Days, contains seven of his old pop hits and seven new songs.
“It seemed a lot more fun to me,” says Vannelli, who didn’t want to just re-write old hits.
“We are all held captive to the winds of pop … but I didn’t want to come across as a well’s gone dry kind of artist.”
Which is definitely not the case with Vannelli, who says once he started writing pop songs again, found it hard to stop.

I have recently found out from a friend in Italy, Mr. Vannelli's grandparents were from two small towns in the Abruzzi region of Italy, Casacalenda and Ripabottoni. The towns are located very close to where my grandparents were born, Santa Croce di Magliano. I still have relatives living there. Interesting to know.

THINKING LOCALLY -- Gino Vannelli loves Portland, though you'd never know that from his performances in the city through the years.
In fact, Vannelli -- who scored big hits in the 1970s with such grand-scale pop productions as "I Just Wanna Stop" and "People Gotta Move" -- has lived in the area since 1992, now in Corbett. In all that time, he's yet to play a show in Portland.
"I feel like a ghost, walking around the streets in Portland," Vannelli said recently over lunch at Wildwood. "People ask me what I do. And I work all the time! Just not here."
Actually, Vannelli has worked plenty around here, building two studios and recording a pair of albums for the jazz-oriented Verve Forecast label. But he's focused his touring on the places where his following remains strongest: in Eastern Canada (near his native Montreal), the eastern United States and "about 80 percent in Europe."
"This time around I figured it was high time I did a gig here."
"This time" is Tuesday and Wednesday at Mississippi Studios, where Vannelli launches a tour in support of his forthcoming album, "These Are the Days." Due out Jan. 17 in Canada (as of this writing, the U.S. release had not been determined), the album is divided between seven earlier hits in remastered recordings and seven new songs that return Vannelli to the mainstream after a decade of exploration in jazz, "quiet storm" R&B and bel canto styles.
Vannelli said he also wanted to have something that reflected the roots he now recognizes he and his wife have put down in the Portland area. Instead of using musicians from Montreal, he has assembled a band with three of Portland's top players: pianist Randy Porter, who worked on Vannelli's 1995 album "Yonder Tree," bassist Sandin Wilson and drummer Reinhardt Melz. Guitarist Allen Hinds from Los Angeles completes the group. Rhythmically, harmonically, texturally, the band is imposingly talented, and Vannelli's voice -- after diligent study in recent years to handle the classical orientation of his multilingual "Canto" album -- is in impeccable form.
Vannelli will perform a mix of material from throughout his career, from those early hits to the '80s electro-pop artifact "Black Cars" to more recent work, albeit adapted to his mature sound and approach.
"I've been focusing the past six or seven years on doing songs people know, but doing them in a different way," he said. "And now people are loving it and wondering what new approach I will take."

With his last two albums, Gino Vannelli successfully caught a couple of childhood dreams.
The pop-music singer-songwriter satisfied deep yearnings with the jazz release "Yonder Tree" in 1995 and the classical album "Canto" in 2003.
"Yonder Tree" didn't set the sales charts on fire, he admits, but his friends in the business liked it. The jazz charts chased a muse he had followed since his youth, when his father was a big-band singer in Montreal and his young son couldn't avoid hearing - and falling in love with - records by Tito Puente and Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck and Ella Fitzgerald.
"Canto" was the result of loads of hard work. Vannelli says he decided in 1999 to study the romantic languages, reinvestigate orchestration, take another trip to the world of musical theory. He sang the song "Parole Per Mio Padre (A Word for My Father)" on the CD "Haitek Haiku," which Vannelli produced for Dutch pianist Niels Lan Doky.
"Somebody at the Vatican heard it and wanted me to perform it for the pope," Vannelli says during a recent phone interview from his home of a dozen years, a ranch house outside of Portland, Ore.
Record company executives from BMG saw a telecast of that event and signed Vannelli to record "Canto."
That album still sells "not millions, but respectably, around the world," Vannelli says.
So a happy Vannelli, 53, brings a wide repertoire for his main-stage set Saturday night at the M&T Syracuse Jazz Fest.
He has his old pop hits, such as "People Gotta Move," "I Just Wanna Stop" and "Living Inside Myself." Vannelli has reworked those some. "If I was going to tour, I knew people expected to hear certain songs. But I knew it would be my spiritual death if I just gave people my old songs. After 25 years, I couldn't just go out and do that. So my choice was: I do them, but I tweak them."
Vannelli is also working on a new album.
It started out as a greatest-hits project for Universal, with two new songs.
"But this is morphing into something more than a greatest-hits," Vannelli says. "It's actually going to be seven (hits) and seven (new songs)."
On the new ones, due out in October, Vannelli fans will hear his take on the contemporary pop scene.
"I kept listening to pop radio to figure out where I fit in," Vannelli says. "I hadn't listened for 20 or maybe 15 years, really. The sentiment has changed. Revolutionizing the world doesn't exist anymore in lyrical content. People are interested in interpersonal relationships. But so much of that is downcast, which is not my cup of tea."
Vannelli wrote 28 songs, looking for a place where he can say, "This feels good, my voice fits right into a good place here, and I find myself not feeling silly playing it."
He says the ones that made the album include "Venus Envy," "about a woman addicted to plastic surgery," and "East West World," "looking into the eye of a belly dancer and the world she represents."
"To me it just gets down to, is it hip or not hip? At this stage of my life, is it a downer or upper? Do I want to sing it? Will it get the solar plexus going? Those basic things have to be there," Vannelli says.

Saturday night, May 28, 2005, I was in a jazz club in Portland called Jimmy Mak's listening to a hot bass player and his band. Sandin Wilson is the bass player and is widely recognized on the West coast. About 2/3 of the way through his first set, he started playing "Brother to Brother" and then Gino hopped up on stage and nailed the original arrangement as heard on his recording. The crowd went nuts! Gino stayed through the break and was very generous to everyone. I shook his hand, told him it was a great thrill to hear that song again and many thanks.
