It's Wednesdaymorning in Holland, the Netherlands, 8 o'clock in the morning and the very first e-mail, an e-mail with praises, about Gino's very first "THESE ARE THE DAYS" concert in Portland, Oregon !!! Because of the time difference the concert just ended, here we go with an an e-mail from Gloria dated Wednesday 4 January 2006, Dutch time 8am.
With the subject : Re: Gino in Portland.

I just left the concert - it was amazing!
Only 70 people and so very intimate. He sang with his "new band" (all local Portland-area musicians) non-stop for almost 2 hours. He seemed so shy. He told little stories between songs (I.e. about meeting the pope) and actually has a very good sense of humor. After singing he left the room for only about 5-6 minutes then came right back in and mingled.

I had him autograph my very worn copy of "Powerful People" LP and had my picture taken with him.

A very memorable, awesome evening.......... Gloria.

An e-mail from Sandin Wilson the bass guitar player in Gino Vannelli's band.
The subject : WE rocked last night!!

WE rocked last night!! Just a couple funny spots came up, (miscounts and volume changes), but other than that it was an amazing first show...

I will send some pics...
Take care
Sandin

It's Thursdaymorning now 5 January 2006 in Holland, the Netherlands. Again early in the morning and we received 4 e-mails from Gino Vannelli fans who could not sleep after again a superb live concert !!! And yesssss pictures, nice pictures...

An e-mail from Teresa L. who lives in the Seattle area with the subject : Gino's 2nd Portland Show.

Hello you two,
I just got back from Gino's show and wanted to tell you how wonderful it was! It was so nice to be able to see him here in the Pacific Northwest! I know I wasn't the only one who made the drive down from Seattle to see him in his own backyard, so to speak.

The studio was packed with a standing-room-only, very appreciative crowd. Gino really had his groove on tonight--he seemed very relaxed, playful, and ready to rock with this new band (and BTW he looked incredible too). They started with a wild, rockin' version of Wild Horses and proceeded to scorch the room for the next hour and a half. They played 13 songs total, including the two new ones, It's Only Love and Venus Envy. Great new songs! Absolutely incredible from start to finish! He put his usual masterful spin on the older songs to make them sound fresh, including a cookin', hip-swiveling rendition of Black Cars.

After one encore, the crowd tried for another, but then the lights came on and everyone groaned that it was over. Gino came out shortly after that and was his usual gracious self, signing autographs and taking photos. He was kind enough to sign my Wheels of Life sheet music and take a photo with me.

So here's the play list in case you haven't received it from anyone else yet:
1) Wild Horses
2) Living Inside Myself
3) It's Only Love
4) Just A Motion Away
5) A Little Bit of Judas
6) Wheels of Life
7) Brother to Brother
8) Hurts to Be in Love
9) I Die a Little More Each Day
10) Venus Envy
11) I Just Wanna Stop
12) Black Cars
Encore
13) People Gotta Move

I'm also attaching a few photos--I'll try to send some better ones after I've had some sleep!
Take care as always, Teresa L.

An e-mail from Tom J. who lives in Oregon, with the subject : What A Great Concert - Portland Was The Best.

Barend and Trees
Thanks so much for the advance information.
What a fantastic evening………. Gino was great. Small, intimate group and everyone had a great time. A lot of local musicians were there. Only about 70 or so people. He sang for almost 1 ½ hrs…………Wow!! I was right up front standing almost on the stage. I could have played the drums if I wanted to I was so close!!!!!!!!!! He sang two of his new songs from the new album and all of the old ones from the album. Gino went to a rock and roll style instead of the jazz or classical. It was very interesting, but great music. All of his musicians were local and very talented. Solo guitar, bass guitar, keys and drums. It’s late at night now, but I’m still so pumped I can’t go to bed. What a dream come true for Cheryl and I. Varryl was with us and totally enjoyed the evening also. Ed and Phylis were also there. They all sat in the balcony. Ed and I went down right up front. I want you to know that I thought of the two of you tonight and wished you both could have been here so that we could have all enjoyed it together. Thought I would email with a big THANK YOU AND LOVE! I have attached a few pics. I reduced the size to email you because I have dial-up and it’s so slow.

A second e-mail from Sandin Wilson the bass guitar player in Gino Vannelli's band.
The subject : Re: WE rocked last night!!

Barend and Trees ,
The show last night was even better than the night before, we are working out the little kinks, but it is an incredible showing of Gino, his incredible music, and his "unknown" killer band from Portland, Oregon......
take care, I have to prepare so many things to be gone so long....
All my best to you both
Sandin

Thank you again..... the shows were very good, the crowd was very impressed with How young Gino looks, (and sounds) and how well we all perform together in such a short time... we are in Heaven, and we leave for Canada on Monday... email me anytime and I will let you know how things are going...
Take care. Sandin

Another e-mail from Teresa L. dated 6 January 2006.
The subject : Re: Gino's 2nd Portland Show

B&T--
I'm happy I could help out by sending the review & pictures, especially since you guys tipped me off about getting the tickets before they were sold out! And thank you again so much for that info!

I didn't see any of Gino's family members, but I might not recognize them from photos or the Canto dvd. It was pretty dark in the room, which is one reason why it was hard to get good photos during the show. I figure you'll probably receive some photos with other angles as people send them in (my friend Jon deserves credit for taking most of the shots I sent you--he has a steadier camera hand than I do). Anyway, here's another batch of photos in case you need any additional ones to choose from, including one of Gino doing the autograph thing afterwards.
Happy New Year! Teresa

An e-mail from K.C. in Washington State. dated 7 January 2006.
The subject : Re: Gino's 2nd Portland Show

Hello! Gino's performances were great, of course, and its amazing how the band has come together in such a short time. Sandin, especially, seemed to have such a great time playing. The audience was good and was very enthusiastic. Difficult for Gino to sing as due to the small space he was so close to the band. He had to teach himself to hear in a whole different way. Thank you again............ K.C.

An e-mail from C. Mert Meeker in Portland, Oregon, USA. Dated 9 January 2006.
The subject : The show was fantastic.

Hi Barend and Trees,
The show was fantastic. I took two friends of mine, one whose name is Michael Allen Harrison, is a nationally known professional pianist who lives in Portland (see www.mahrecords.com). Michael and I work with the Snowman Foundation raising money to provide pianos, other musical instruments and lessons to underprivileged children in our community. In the last 6 years, we have raised close to $1,000,000 and have placed over 30 pianos in the Pacific Northwest at schools and other places.

The room at Mississippi Studios was truly like listening to a concert in your living room. It was intimate (max of 80-90 people) with a standing room only crowd. The band had Randy Porter on keyboards, a guitarist (who name escapes me), Sandin Wilson on bass and Reinhold Melz on drums. They came on stage and tore it up! This band is definitely a pop-rock band. Very talented musicians playing complex Gino-style music. The new arrangements of the hits from the 70's were excellent... melodic, driving, yet still very sophisticated.

Gino looked fantastic! Fit and ready to go. His hair is a little longer than I have seen in recent years. He was wearing blue jeans and an open collared shirt. He looked healthy, happy and his voice was outstanding. The crowd was thrilled. He chatted quite a bit about some funny stories, the new band and the new album. The new songs are very strong. I especially liked the new song "Venus." It will be a strong single. I had a chance after the show to say hi to Gino for a moment. Randy and Sandin are friends of mine. Sandin is so happy to being going on tour with his music idol. A wonderful night and I feel privileged to be able to have attended such a special show!
Take good care,
Peace from Portland, Oregon USA.

Dearest Friends,
Of course I have a reaction about the Gino concerts in Portland. It has taken me this long to catch my breath!!! He is ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS !!!!! We went both nights and were spellbound at both performances. He is truly magical and beyond belief. It is difficult to believe that one individual can have so much talent, but it is true. He continues to amaze and delight the senses both visually and audibly.

I hope we can see him many more times LIVE !!!! It is always a delight to hear him.
Hope you are having a good New Year.
Love, Phyll.

Hello Barend and Trees,
I see no problems as you put my comments on your page and by the way I made a little survey myself this weekend. I try the Gino Vannelli web page and the media player on different browser at home and at work. This is the result:
On Macintosh MacOS 10.3.9
The media player works well on those browsers: Netscape 7, Firefox .10, Opera 8.5, Internet Explorer 5.2, Safari (only available for Mac), On PC Windows 2000, Netscape 7.2, Firefox 1.8, Doesn't work on Internet Explorer 6.0
So maybe it's a problem of RAM, not enough RAM so the player could not play. Or maybe it could be a problem of plugin, so the solution will be to download the latest flash player wich is free and available at http://www.macromedia.com

Well I hope this will help you a little bit.
Only 15 days before the new Gino Vannelli will be available. Well I read on Univesal web site that they will re-issue some Gino Vannelli cd's :

A Pauper In Paradise release date: 01/24/06 cat#: 7502146642 format: Compact Disc label: M
Brother To Brother release date: 01/24/06 cat#: 7502131702 format: Compact Disc label: M
The Gist Of The Gemini release date: 01/24/06 cat#: 7502131122 format: Compact Disc label: M
Storm At Sunup release date: 01/24/06 cat#: 7502145332 format: Compact Disc label: M
Powerful People release date: 01/24/06 cat#: 7502131202 format: Compact Disc label: M

But they don't have the intention of releasing his first album "Crazy Life". I'm crying :_o(
Do you have any idea why? I saw the album on sale on eBay, I try to buy it but the transaction ended at 107 $ US :_o(
I'm crying again! Well take care and let me know if things will work out well. Claude

I would like to PRAISE Gino for confronting such an infectious obsession.
For years people have been consumed with looking youthful, now it's looking super-perfect, or worse yet, "cloning" themselves" surgically. As a parent, it sickens me to read about 16 year old girls getting boob jobs for their birthdays. Of all the characteristics young women need to cope in todays world, lip and breast implants aren't going to cut it. I realize that the media holds major responsibility; fashion, tv, video, the music industry but parents have to be parents and have the guts to say no.

As for the adult women, maybe hearing it coming from Gino, they'll see that you don't have to look like "Barbie" to be loved by a desireable man!! Just wait until I hear the music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! haha

Hello Barend and Trees,

Well I dropped by your web site every time I'm looking for something on Gino Vannelli on the internet. :o) I'm listening right now to Venus Envy on Universal Canada Gino Vannelli web site. Wow this is real Gino Vannelli sound. I just love the chorus. Can't wait until january 17th or 24th (by the way the elections in Canada will be on january 23rd) according to Univesal Canada the cd is due to january 17th. Anyway. I think the cd will be the logical follow-up of Slow Love. I will still go to your web site from time to time.
All the best, Claude (from Montreal not from France as my Yahoo address may confuse you)

Another e-mail from Claude from Montréal, Canada dated 8 December 2005.
With the subject : Re: Gino Vannelli and Venus Envy.

Hello Barend and Trees,

Nice to hear from you :o) It's strange that you don't hear the Gino's new songs. Well actually I tried with IE (Internet Explorer) and it didn't work but I also have Firefox and it works perfectly. Well the mysteries of the Web! I don't know wich browser you used. Maybe try with Firefox or more recent version of other browsers.

Wow it's really two great songs! Can't wait until january 17th or 24th? According to Universal Canada the cd will be available on january 17th but this information was posted on november 25th. So??? I also asked them about releasing "Crazy Life" but it seemed that they don't have the intention of releasing this cd. :_o(

Well this morning I surprised myself in the shower singing "Why do you want to be Venus...." Very catchy tune! Very good pop/jazzy Vannelli style. And the voice! Concerning the concerts well if Gino comes to Montréal, I will probably go. There's a concert in Sainte-Foy but it's in the middle of the week so it's a little more difficult to go because Sainte-Foy is about 3 hours drive from Montréal and I work. But I'm sure he will come to Montréal. I saw him a couple of times, at the Montréal Forum for the Brother to Brother Tour, at the Spectrum for the Inconsoloble Man Tour (I don't know if I still have the t-shirt with the cd logo - but anyway I probably don't fit in it anymore ah ah ah) and last time was at the Cabaret for the Slow Love Tour.
Well thanks for your answer and sharing. Take care.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Jazzy New Year. Claude

Dearest Barend & Trees,
Hope all is well with you. Thanks for the e-mail regarding the Portland Shows. My plans are to go to Canada for the first four shows in January. If I could get the time off from work I would go to Portland in a heartbeat but I must be patient and wait a week to see the Master. OH! What a long long week it will be.

Finally I was able to hear and download "It's Only Love" and "Venus Envy" from the umusic website. OMG Both songs are great but I have to say that I really really LUV LUV LUV "Venus Envy" The opening is so different and the words are so true in this day and age. So far I think I have listened to it a hundred times and plan to go home after work and play it at least twenty more times. What a great addiction to have! (LOL) I picture GINO leaning on the microphone, hand on his hip singing this song. Truely a kicka-- song from GINO. "It's Only Love" is jazzy and quite funny. You can really hear the humor in GINO's voice and words. The new album can't be in my hands soon enough. So now I am counting the days until Canada.

Have a great Holiday Season. The New Year can't come soon enough for me. 2006 will be filled with plenty of music from GINO to lift up our spirits and souls for the whole year.
Be well and take care, Mary Lou

Having read other reports from his concerts, I'm going to assume he will be gracious enough to sign autographs and allow a picture or two after the gig?

If you like, I'll write you back after the magical evening is over..........

Just wanted to let you know two of my friends and I will be at Gino's show at Mississippi Studios in Portland, Oregon on Wednesday, January 4. The venue is very small... seats around 40-50 people. Should be a lot of fun.

I will write you with a review if you like.
Take care, Mert Meeker

I spent 4 hrs. during rehearsal for the Canada tour experiencing this very hot new band Gino has assembled. It will be well worth waiting for. If he chooses to take this band to Europe, you are in for a treat. Seasoned players who have a bent HIS way. Power and Pop, vocals and silky, slick playing with soul. Look for some great new twists on some wonderful old songs.

[ADULT CONTEMPO] Gino Vannelli—who emerged from the same '70s fondue pot that produced such Doobie-ous talents as Ambrosia, England Dan & John Ford Coley, Firefall and Player—is a trend-defying force in pop music. With a deep musicality, an otherwordly falsetto and an eye for good talent, the Canadian-born, Portland-based artist (known for such sophisticated, synth-'n'-pleather hits as "I Just Wanna Stop") transcends any mere shag-carpeted, love-me-in-my-Chevy-van kitsch. With an all-star PDX band in tow (including pianist Randy Porter and the great Reinhardt Melz on drums) and an album of retooled originals and oldies, the eight-track avatar proves he's still the reigning master of the adult contemporary/smooth jazz cocktail. Also Wednesday, Jan. 4. TIM DUROCHE.

Juno winner Gino graces Gryphon
Published: Thu, Dec 15th, 2005 in The Barrie Advance

Gino Vannelli is part philosopher, musician, composer and poet. He brings these talents together in his music for a one-night only performance in Barrie at Gryphon Theatre on Jan. 15.

Vannelli's string of hit recordings, including Wild Horses and Black Cars has earned him several Juno awards and Grammy nominations.

With his long dark hair, his dramatic stage presence, and lyrics about love and life, Vannelli's rise to fame in the 1970s included his status as a sex symbol – a role which never diminished the power of his music.

Vannelli's albums and incredible live performances result in his status as an enduring and recognizable international artist.

Vannelli's new pop album is set to be released only in Canada in January. The album features seven new muical creations including the radio single released in Canada in the Fall of 2005 entitled "It's Only Love".

While the song is receiving a great amount of play, the entire album is mixed in Gino's own style and quality.

For tickets telephone 705-728-4613, or click Gryphon. Non-subscriber ticket price is $44.

USA : Forgotten star shines across genres
Gino Vannelli enlists local band for global gigs, return to pop By ERIC BARTELS
Issue date: Tue, Jan 3, 2006
The Portland Tribune

Hold the jokes about the disappearance of Gino Vannelli, whom most Americans remember as the aggressively sultry pop crooner who hit the big time around the turn of the ’80s. “It’s the hipper people who know who he is,” says his new bassist, Sandin Wilson. “You ask any musician. He’s a genius.” Wilson is part of a largely local band that Vannelli, who lives in the Portland area, will soon take on a global tour. As a warm-up, the group will play two gigs at Mississippi Studios starting tonight.

“People are coming from New York to this club because they can’t wait,” says Wilson, formerly of the Portland pop successes Nu Shooz and Quarterflash. “It’s a prestigious gig, it really is. It’s like playing in Zappa’s band, it’s so highly respected.” Vannelli has stayed off America’s radar in part by living quietly in east Multnomah County for the past decade, a husband and father who spent time watching his son’s basketball games. The two shows this week mark his first-ever Portland performances. Sandin and the rest of the band are only too happy to link themselves to the Montreal-born Vannelli. “He has the most amazing ear I’ve ever seen,” Wilson says. “He hears mistakes. He hears wrong chords. He knows his music.

“My whole focus is to be the best bass player he’s had, and he’s had all my heroes. Gino’s been my idol for a long time, and now he’s my friend. It’s the coolest thing.” Vannelli first surfaced on the Billboard charts in 1974 with a brassy funk number called “People Gotta Move” that reached No. 22. Four years later, punk rock had raged across the Atlantic to the U.S., but acts like Boz Scaggs, Pablo Cruise and the Little River Band were still mining pop gold with loungey, lavishly produced soft rock.

Vannelli returned and scored two Top 10 hits, “I Just Wanna Stop” and “Living Inside Myself.” But a dispute with Arista Records kept him from following up. “They wanted me to record Air Supply songs. I couldn’t,” he says. He shifted gears, returning to his jazz and classical roots, and carved out a following outside the United States. In Europe, where he has remained popular since his early stardom, Vannelli still plays before audiences of thousands. “We played Copenhagen, and we had 8,000 people,” he says.

Vannelli moved to Portland in 1994. “Many years ago, I met a beautiful woman placing some jewelry in a window on Broadway, and I fell in love with her,” he says. Tired of the demands on his time that living in Los Angeles presented, and aware of Portland’s reputation as a jazz town, Vannelli decided to move north, marrying the woman he had met years before. “I wanted to live a different kind of life,” he says. “I’ve really kept myself low-profile on purpose.”

Within a year, he had recorded a pop album “Yonder Tree” with help from current bandmate Randy Porter. The record sold 100,000 units, a solid figure, before Vannelli decided to change directions. “I took a bit of a hiatus,” he says. “As time passed, I developed a Montreal group and started touring the world.” Vannelli also composed symphonic music and played with orchestras in Europe and elsewhere.

Vannelli is ready to shift gears again. “After a while playing with large ensembles, I said, ‘I want to play pop music again,’ ” he says. He also opted against his Montreal-based band in favor of something local. “I really missed the opportunity to play where I live. I’ve never played a gig here. I decided on my backyard band.” The group includes Wilson, Porter, drummer Reinhardt Melz and guitarist Allen Hinds. “They’re world-class to me,” Vannelli says of the new band. Still youthful at 53, Vannelli isn’t concerned that he may be little more than a trivia question to American pop fans.

“I give myself to everything I do. I love everything I do,” he says.

A new, centred, more insightful Gino Vannelli comes to town
Lucy Purdy

I was instantly drawn to the intense style, and jazzy, contemporary rhythms of a new song I recently heard on the radio. "Perhaps a new artist?" I thought. But there was something familiar yet fresh in the voice.

It was Gino Vannelli singing the single, It's Only Love, from his new album, These Are the Days. Indeed, "wild horses had not dragged him away."

I spoke with Vannelli about his time away from recording, the philosophy that brought him to a place of renewed creativity, an extensive upcoming tour, and his show at Gryphon Theatre on Jan. 15.

Born in Montreal, Vannelli now calls Portland, Oregon home. He had signed with RCA Records in Canada before turning 17, soon leaving for New York, then Los Angeles with his brother in search of an American record deal.

An encounter with Herb Alpert in the A&M Records parking lot, combined with the young man's heartfelt pleas for an audition, led to success.

People Gotta Move, and five other songs Vannelli had written ended up on six albums. Five of those albums made it to the Billboard charts between 1974 and 1978.

After a hiatus in the 1980s,Vannelli returned with Black Cars in 1985. And in 1987, Wild Horses, climbed the Top Ten charts in several countries. By 1990, he had grown disenchanted with the music industry, opting to leave LA to start his own label, and to study philosophy and world religions.

He took voice lessons, and in 2003 released the CD Canto, which included songs in Italian, Spanish and French.

The formal study of philosophy ultimately inspired Vannelli to leave what he described as the suspended state of learning, in order to act, experience and apply his personal growth. Vannelli said he emerged from a low point in his career, more centred and insightful, after realizing the need to deconstruct himself in order to find a way out of being lost at sea.

The wise words of his dying Kabballah teacher rang true. "You'll find it through your own craft," Vannelli recalled.

On These Are the Days, seven fantastic new songs are included with seven of Vannelli's classics.

"We wanted to re-introduce the contemporary world to my old songs, and what better way to do it than through new songs?" he said. "It was an honest attempt for me to get back into the pop mainstream, and it was a greater challenge than I imagined it would be."

Vannelli began his tour this week, accompanied by a rockin' new band he formed in Oregon. Having never played in his adopted home town, the tour kicked off with a show in Portland.

Numerous appearances in Canada, Europe, and the American mid-west will follow.

Vannelli promises a high-energy show. Fans will be treated to their favourites with a bonus.

"My old songs have gone through some refinement, some change, but they're not unrecognizable." he said, adding that with the love of music it becomes essential to update the self. "It really means updating the material, how you approach it to make it better for the audience."

With These Are the Days, Vannelli is clearly on to something exciting. Another album of 12 new songs is already in the works.

For tickets to Gino Vannelli at Gryphon Theatre. Jan. 15, at 8 p.m., call the box office at 728-4316.
