Gino Vannelli: Nous faisons le Festival de jazz de Montréal avec le Grand orchestre à la Place des Arts, nous faisons aussi le Bal Mercedes-Benz ce vendredi dans le cadre du Grand Prix. Je reviens tout juste de New York où nous avons présenté un spectacle aux médias.
Gino Vannelli: We’re doing the Montreal Jazz Festival with the Grand Orchestra at the Place des Arts (Art Square), and we’re also doing the Mercedes-Benz Ball this Friday in the Grand Prix event. I return just in time to New York where we’re going to present a show to the press.

rose065: Je dois avouer avoir pas suivi votre carrière depuis bien longtemps... Qu'avez-vous fait ces dernières années?
rose065: I must admit that I haven’t followed your career since recently… what have you done these last years?

Gino Vannelli: Bonne question... J'ai composé, j'ai écrit un opéra qui est presque terminé et j'ai regardé mon fils grandir!
Gino Vannelli: Good question… I’ve composed, written an opera that is almost finished and I’ve watched my son growing up!

Gino Vannelli: J'ai deux frères qui sont maintenant à Los Angeles et qui sont toujours dans le milieu de la musique.

Gino Vannelli: Non! Quand il avait 9 ans, oui, mais ça a changé! Il était un bon chanteur à 8-9 ans.

prog: Comme Billy Joel , vous délaissez le pop pour une démarche plus classique. Avec vos nombreuses années de carrière, croyez-vous avoir fait le tour de la musique pop?
prog: Like Billy Joel, you abandoned pop for a more classical method. After numerous years in the business, do you think you have come back around to pop music?

Gino Vannelli: Pour maintenant, oui, mais il faut comprendre que ce que je fais maintenant sera peut-être de la musique pop dans 10 ans, la musique change beaucoup. Certaines chansons comme «The Last dance» est un peu plus pop. Il y a des éléments classiques, mais il y aussi des éléments de pop.
Gino Vannelli: For now, yes, but it’s necessary to understand that what I’m doing now will be maybe pop in ten years, music changes so much. Certain songs like “The Last Dance” are a little more pop. There are classical elements, but there are also elements of pop.

chichi1: Monsieur Vanelli y a-t-il un défi dans votre carrière que vous aimeriez réalisez que vous n'avez pas eu l'occasion de faire encore?
chichi1: Mr. Vannelli, is there any challenge in your career that you would like to take up that you’ve never had the chance to do before?

Gino Vannelli: J'aimerais finir mon opéra! et j'aimerais jouer avec quelques uns des meilleurs orchestres de la planète, ce qui devrait arriver dans les deux prochaines années. J'aimerais aussi faire une bonne partie de cet album sur la Scala à Milan en Italie. En janvier-février, nous ferons un concert avec un orchestre hollandais qui s'appelle Metropol pour faire un DVD et j'ai bien hâte. Ce sera un défi puisque ce sera un concert sans interruption pour le DVD, avec le moins possible de montage. Ce sera tout un défi dans le contexte actuel!
Gino Vannelli: I would like to finish my opera! And I would like to play with some of the best orchestras on the planet, which might happen in the next couple of years. I would also like to do a good part of this album at Scala a Milan in Italy. In January-February, we’re doing a concert with a Dutch orchestra called Metropol in order to make a DVD and I’m really eager to do it. It will be a challenge seeing that it will be an uninterrupted concert for DVD, with very little editing. It will be quite a challenge in this context!

Hara: Bonjour Gino ! De quelle manière vous a-t-on invité à participer à la populaire émission Star Académie ? Était-ce pour faire plaisir à Martin qui est un de tes fans ???
Hara: Hello Gino! How did you get invited to participate on the popular Star Academy broadcast? Was it to please Martin, who’s one of your fans?

Gino Vannelli: Je ne sais pas comment c'est arrivé. Je me suis tout simplement retrouvé là-bas!
Gino Vannelli: I don’t know how it happened! I’m just getting my bearings again!

secondcup: lors de ta visite, as-tu été impressionné par le talent des jeunes de star académie?
secondcup: Since your visit, have you been impressed by the talent of the young people at Star Academy?

Gino Vannelli: Je ne crois pas que je les aie vu au maximum de leur potentiel, ils étaient gênés et n'ont pas montré tout ce dont ils étaient capables. Mais j'ai certainement vu des gens sincères et très intéressés à apprendre.
Gino Vannelli: I don’t think I saw them at their highest potential, they were decent but didn’t show everything that they were capable of. But I certainly saw some sincere people that were interested in learning.

actual: Quel est ton plus beau souvenir de carrière?
actual: What is the best memory of your career?

Gino Vannelli: Hum... Il y a eu quand on m'a demandé de chanter à l'émission «Soul Train», une émission où ne chantaient que des Noirs. J'y ai été le premier Blanc à chanter ce qui a été suivi d'une tournée avec Stevie Wonder.
Gino Vannelli: Hmmm…. there was when they asked me to sing for the “Soul Train” Broadcast, a program where nobody sang but Blacks. I was the first white to sing which was followed by a tour with Stevie Wonder.

Jigi: Bonjour, Parlez-moi de votre famille. Vos parents… Je crois savoir que votre père chantait aussi, pouvez-vous le confirmer?
Jigi: Hello, tell me about your family. Your parents…I think I know that your father sang too, is that right?

Gino Vannelli: Oui, il chantait. Il est maintenant décédé. Ma mère habite à Montréal et elle est actuellement en visite chez mes frères à Los Angeles.
Gino Vannelli: Yes, he sang. He has now passed on. My mother lives in Montreal and right now she is visiting my brothers in Los Angeles.

moonlight2: Gino tu as une voix magnifique. Dis moi, de quelle origine est ta famille s'il te plaît?

Gino Vannelli: Mes grands-parents sont nés en Italie. Mon grand-père est venu à Montréal à l'âge de 9 ans.

Gino Vannelli: J'ai commencé à jouer de la batterie à 9 ans. Après ça, j'ai commencé le piano à 13 ans. Puis, vers 15 ans, j'ai commencé à chanter.
Gino Vannelli: I started to play drums at 9. After that, I started the piano at 13. Then, around 15, I started singing.

secondcup: Durant ta carrière, les choses ont-elles toujours bien fonctionné pour toi ou as-tu connu des périodes creuses?
secondcup:Throughout your career, did things always go well for you or have you experienced off-times?

Gino Vannelli: Oui, j'ai connu des périodes difficiles.
Gino Vannelli: Yeah, I’ve had difficult periods.

Gino Vannelli: Le spectacle au Festival de jazz aura une deuxième partie remplie de versions jazz de mon matériel plus vieux.
Gino Vannelli: The show at the Jazz Festival will have a second part filled with jazz versions of my older material.

prog: Quels sont les styles musicaux ou les artistes que vous trouvez intéressants par les temps qui courent?
prog: Which current musical styles or artists do you find interesting right now?

Gino Vannelli: N'importe qui qui fusionne des cultures, c'est toujours intéressant. Peter Gabriel était intéressant parce qu'il fusionnait le pop et la musique moyen-orientale. Miles Davis a fait beaucoup de fusion soul-jazz, Ravel a fusionné le classique avec de la musique basque.
Gino Vannelli: It doesn’t matter which fusion of cultures, it’s all interesting. Peter Gabriel was interesting because he fused pop and Middle Eastern music. Miles Davis did beautifully a soul-jazz fusion, Ravel fused classical with Basque music.

Gino Vannelli: L'album de CSNY Deja vu, James Taylor avec Sweet baby James, Elton John avec Tumble weed connection, Marvin Gaye What's going on, Coletrane Love Supreme, Stevie Wonder Intervision, ce sont les albums que j'écoutais jeune et qui m'ont influencé. Peut-être plus intimidé qu'influencé!
Gino Vannelli: The album by CSNY Deja VE, James Taylor with Sweet Baby James, Elton John with Tumble Weed Connection, Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On?, Coltrane’s Love Supreme, Stevie Wonder’s Intervision, there are the albums that I listened to when I was younger and that influenced me. Maybe more intimidated than influenced!

Jigi: Tu as connu de longues périodes introspectives?
Jigi: Have you had long periods of introspection?

Gino Vannelli: Oui à toutes ces questions!!!
Gino Vannelli: Yes to all of those questions!

Jigi: Avec ton nouveau cd «Canto», retournes-tu à tes origines italiennes?
Jigi: With your new CD “Canto”, do you return to your Italian origins??

Gino Vannelli: Oui, en un sens. Il y a quelque chose dans mon ADN qui est encore italien et j'ai bien aimé chanter en italien. Je chante aussi en français, ce que j'ai bien aimé. Je n'avais jamais chanté en français avant, mis à part quelque phrases dans une chanson avec Martine Saint-Clair (L'amour est loi), mais c'est tout.
Gino Vannelli: Yes, in a sense. There’s something in my DNA that is still Italian and I love to sing in Italian. I also sing in French, which I love. I never sang in French before apart from some lines in a song with Martine Saint-Clair (L’amour est loi-Love is Law) but that’s all.

Maude de Varennes: Il y a des rumeurs qui disent que ce sera ton dernier album ?
Maude de Varennes: There are rumors that this will be your last album.

Gino Vannelli: On en sait jamais! Espérons que les avions continueront à voler!
Gino Vannelli: One never knows! Let’s hope that we’ll continue to fly!

Hara: Dans quelle langue te sens-tu le plus à l'aise ??? L'anglais, le français ??? Parles-tu italien???
Hara: In which language do you feel most comfortable?? English, French? Do you speak Italian?

Gino Vannelli: Pour parler, c'est en anglais, évidemment. Le français est ma seconde langue et je parle un peu l'italien. J'en parlais plus quand j'avais 3 ou 4 ans, mais j'en ai perdu quand je suis entré à l'école. Ce qu'il reste surtout de mon italien, c'est le langage des signes!
Gino Vannelli: As far as speaking, that’s in English, evidently. French is my second language and I speak a little Italian. I spoke it more when I was 3 or 4, but I lost it when I started school. As for the rest of my Italian, it’s mainly sign language!

alizotte: Félicitations pour ta longue carrière, Quelle est ta recette de longévité? Qu'est-ce que tu as trouvé le plus difficile tout au long de ta carrière?
alizotte: Congratulations on your long career, what is the recipe for the longevity? What is it that you’ve found the most difficult in the course of your career?

Gino Vannelli: Faire la séparation entre la vie et la carrière, c'est très difficile. La carrière ne peut pas toujours être à son meilleur. Est-ce que ça veut dire que ta vie doit suivre la même courbe?
Gino Vannelli: Keeping separate your life and your career, that’s very difficult. The career can’t always be at it’s best. Does that mean your life has to follow the same curve?

secondcup: Y a-t-il une tournée de promotion en préparation ou en cours?
secondcup: And do you have a promotional tour in preparation or going on now?

Hara: Quand aura-t-on la chance de te voir en spectacle dans les villes du Québec ???
Hara: When will there be a chance to see a show in Quebec?

Gino Vannelli: Nous serons à Montréal le 6 juillet, on essaie de prévoir un spectacle à Québec pour l'automne.
Gino Vannelli: We will be in Montreal the 6th of July, and one can try to anticipate a show in Quebec in the fall.

mangue: Y aura-t-il d'autres disques plus pop comme «Powerful people» ou «Big dreamers never sleep»?
mangue: And will there be other CD’s more pop-style like “Powerful People” or “Big Dreamers Never Sleep”?

Gino Vannelli: Votre question sera différente après avoir écouté Canto.

chichi1: Aimerais-tu percer dans ton pays d'origine?
chichi1: Would you like to make a name for yourself in your homeland?

Gino Vannelli: Je connais pas mal de succès en Italie. Mais l'Italie n'est pas mon pays d'origine, c'est le Canada qui l'est.
Gino Vannelli: I see little success in Italy. But Italy isn’t my country, it’s Canada.

nuit9999: Pourquoi avoir fait carrière au USA et là revenir ici avec un nouveau cd ?
nuit9999: Why have you made a career in the US and then return here with a new CD?

martine24: Hello Gino, I love what you do with music.

Gino Vannelli: Parce que le CD est sorti au Canada en premier. Il sortira en juillet aux États-Unis et j'y ferai beaucoup de promotion, comme j'en fais ici.
Gino Vannelli: Because the CD is out in Canada first. I will go out in July in the United States and it will be a good promotion like it is here.

mangue: I’ve already listened to it and I really love it… my question more implies the musical arrangement that you wish to take on now.

martine24: Classical music sings for/through you, it’s much better.

Gino Vannelli: Je n'en ai pas un préféré. Mais j'aime bien écouter du Miles Davis, «Kind of blue». Merci mangue! Merci à Martine24 pour la remarque! L'effort n'était pas pour moi de tenter de chanter du classique, mais bien d'aborder le classique d'une façon moderne avec des éléments d'opéra.
Gino Vannelli: I don’t have a preference. But I really like to listen to Miles Davis, “Kind of Blue”. Thanks mangue! Thanks to Martine 24 for the comment! For me the effort wasn’t to attempt to sing classical style but rather to approach classical from a modern angle with the elements of opera.

chichi1: Quelle chanson est votre plus grand défi vocalement?
chichi1: Which song is your biggest challenge vocally?

martine24: Hey ! Gino ta voix est superbe !
martine24: Hey, Gino your voice is superb!!

Gino Vannelli: Hum... Je pense que c'est «The last days of summer». Les mots sont comme un poème sur ma femme, mon fils, mon père et vieillir. Je voulais mettre les mots en avant, devant la voix, pas de mélodrame, que la vérité. J'ai donc dû considérer les mots d'abord, puis utiliser ma voix. Je l'ai d'ailleurs prise un octave plus bas pour mieux y arriver. Ça m'a pris 3 or 4 reprises pour y arriver, à différents moments sur une période de deux semaines.
Gino Vannelli: Hmmm…I think that it’s “The Last Days of Summer”. The words are like a poem about my wife, my son, my father and growing old. I wanted to put the words in front, before the voice, not melodramatically, but truthfully. I just had to contemplate the words first, then use my voice. I furthermore had it set an octave too low for me. It took me 3 or 4 tries to get there, at different moments during a period of two weeks.

chichi1: Je voudrais vous dire que je vous trouve très humble avec tout ce que vous avez accompli...comment faites-vous pour rester vous-même?
chichi1: I would like to tell you that I find you very humble with all you’re achieved... what do you do to stay you?

Gino Vannelli: Je regarde combien de grands artistes ont vécu avant moi et qui vivent maintenant et que le monde va continuer d'en produire.
Gino Vannelli: I watch a number of big artists stay true to life and how they live and how the world keeps them producing.

chfrchfr: Comment t'y prends-tu pour travailler ta voix? Des techniques particulières?
chfrchfr: How do you keep your voice in shape? Through any particular methods?

chichi1: Avez-vous déjà suivi des cours de chants???
chichi1: Have you ever taken voice lessons?

Gino Vannelli: J'ai un professeur en Oregon. Je fais des exercices pratiquement tous les jours, environ 20 minutes chaque fois. Ça n'est pas toujours bon à entendre!
Gino Vannelli: I have a professor in Oregon. I do exercises practically every day, around 20 minutes each time. That’s not always nice to hear!

chichi1: Penses-tu faire de la musique jusqu'à ta mort ou arrêter et faire autre chose plus tard ?
chichi1: Do you think you’ll keep making music until you die or will you quit and do something else later?

chichi1: Pardon!

Gino Vannelli: Hum... Si je meurs aujourd'hui, vous auriez raison! Je crois certainement que ce serait un objectif. Ce n'est pas assez bon de faire de la musique jusqu'à en mourir. C'est de faire de la musique avec de la valeur, pas de faire de la musique que pour faire de la musique.
Gino Vannelli: Hmmm…If I die today, you would be right! I think certainly that it’s objective. It’s not enough to just make music until you die. It’s to make music that’s worthwhile, not make music for the sake of making music.

moonlight2: Gino, quelles sont tes plus grandes passions dans la vie?
moonlight2: Gino what are the biggest passions in your life?

martine24: Surtout n'arrête pas tu as une si belle voix, Gino
martine24: Simply don’t stop, you have a terrific voice, Gino.

Jigi: Que penses-tu du chanteur Andrea Bocelli?
Jigi: What do you think of the singer Andrea Bocelli?

Gino Vannelli: Il a une superbe voix.

moonlight2: As-tu hâte de chanter lors des tes nouveaux spectacles?
moonlight2: Are you excited about singing at your new shows?

Gino Vannelli: Oui, beaucoup! Quand on a un grand orchestre, on espère que tout le monde sera en accord.
Gino Vannelli: Yes, very much! When one has a big orchestra, one hopes that everything will go well.

Hara: Malgré ta grande expérience, as-tu encore le trac ???
Hara: In spite of your long experience, do you still get stage fright?

Gino Vannelli: Oui, toujours! Ça prend peut-être la première minute avant de savoir que tout va bien.
Gino Vannelli: Yes, always! That comes maybe the first minute before knowing that everything will go well.

chichi1: Avez-vous un rituel avant un grand spectacle?
chichi1: Do you have a ritual before a big show?

Gino Vannelli: Oui. Je chante une chanson, utilise ma voix, juste pour m'assurer qu'elle est là! Il y a des fois que je pense que je vais marcher sur scène et devenir aphone. Je fais un peu de méditation pour me calmer, je bois beaucoup d'eau et j'essaie de dire des blagues salées.
Gino Vannelli: Yes, I sing a song, use my voice, just to assure me that it’s there. There are times that I think that I’m going to walk on stage and just loose my voice. I do a little meditation to calm myself, I drink a lot of water and I try to tell jokes.

dracine444: Quelles seront les chansons de votre prochain spectacle?
dracine444: Which songs will be in your next show?

Gino Vannelli: La première partie du spectacle sera des chansons du nouveau CD, Canto, The last dance, Il viaggio, Parole per mio padre. Dans la deuxième partie, je ferai beaucoup de chansons que le monde connaît, mais avec le grand orchestre.
Gino Vannelli: The first part of the show will be songs from the new CD, Canto. The Last Dance, Il Viaggio, Parole Per Mio Padre. In the second part, I will do a lot of songs that everyone knows, but with the big Orchestra.

nuit9999: Aimerais tu faire un CD soft-jazz après celui-ci
nuit9999: Would you like to do a soft-jazz CD after this one?

Gino Vannelli: Non, j'ai une idée de faire une nouvelle forme d'opéra, une version vraiment courte, 60-70 minutes, avec une histoire écrite comme une nouvelle, écrite dans le CD, avec des chansons qui mettent en valeur l'histoire. J'aimerais parler du voyage de mon grand-père vers Montréal, quand il est venu sur un bateau à 9 ans. Je regarde mon fils et je pense à lui. Il est mort d'une mort très violente, il a été décapité dans un ascenseur. Une histoire très dramatique! c'est à ce moment que mon père a quitté sa carrière.
Gino Vannelli: No, I have an idea for doing a new type of opera, a really short version, sixty or seventy minutes, with a story written like a novel, written on the CD, with some songs that give life to the story. I would like to talk about the voyage of my grandfather to Montreal, when he came over on a boat at the age of 9. I watch my son and think of him. He died a violent death, he was decapitated in an elevator. One very dramatic story! It’s at that moment that my father left his career.

chichi1: Aimeriez-vous jouer dans une comédie musicale?
chichi1: Would do like to do a musical comedy?

Gino Vannelli: J'en ai écrit une qui est presque terminée et je me suis donné un petit rôle! Tous ces projets s'étalent dans les 5 prochaines années.
Gino Vannelli: I wrote one that is almost finished and I gave myself a small role! All these projects are spread out over the next 5 years.

Gino Vannelli: Un album entier en français? Hum... Je ne sais pas si je peux être si intéressant... Je crois qu'il faudrait que j'habite ici 5 ou 10 ans pour mieux saisir les sujets de l'heure au Québec... Faire une ou deux chansons, c'est quelque chose, mais faire un album entier, il fait avoir le pouls de la vie quotidienne des gens d'ici. Voyons d'abord ce que les gens penseront de moi à chanter en français Joli Coeur, on verra après!
Gino Vannelli: An entire album in French? Hmmm….I don’t’ know if I would be very interested… I think that I would have to live here for 5 or 10 years to better grasp the current issues in Quebec… to make one or two songs, that’s one thing, but to do an entire album, I would have to have the pulse of daily life of the people here. We’ll see first what the people think of me singing in French Joli Coeur, then we shall see!
