An artist inspired by Gino Vannelli's CANTO tells her story and shows us her work of art called :
The Colors of
I’ve been creating fabric art/quilts for 10 years…and there is always another quilt or art quilt spinning in my head as the “next” one. At the end of November 2004, I purchased Gino Vannelli’s cd, Canto………my life has not been the same since. I listen to this masterpiece every morning, evening, and at least once anytime I’m in my studio at work. I first heard Gino in 1975, Storm at Sunup was new to me, as was Gino. But I was immediately “hooked” on such insightful writing—and to find Gino was my age was amazing—I was hitting the books at Kansas University, he was setting the world on fire with his music.
After I listened to Canto for the first time, I decided it was time to get out all of his older work…I’ve got Gino on vinyl, cassette and CD…so I’ve been listening to him for a very long time! I’m happy to say that now I have everything he’s released except Crazy Life, which I will find! I don’t have any of his collaborations except with Montserrat Caballe, but I’m working on that now, too. Anything to fill Gino’s coffers so he can keep giving us his fabulous voice and…….and I also decided, after finding Barend and Trees “Shameless Devotion to Gino Vannelli" website, I was going to make them a piece of art for their efforts to keep all the die hard Gino fans informed. As I worked late at night in my studio, Yonder Tree alternating with Canto playing in the background, this became the Colors of Canto.
The Colors of Canto
Years ago when I’d hear Gino, I always called him the Dark Prince. Not because of the songs he’d written (even though some of them are quite dark) but because of his beautiful black hair and olive skin. I’d think of Italy and warm colors, and of the riches of the Medici’s. Gino’s songs are always very textured with meanings, layer after layer of life in one song, let alone his entire oeuvre. So when I started pulling fabrics for this piece, all I could think of was the warm colors of Italy and the colors I was seeing in the photos of the Canto CD liner.
Each fabric was chosen because of how I see Gino, and his dedication to his music, family and fans. So look and see the fabrics I describe and understand why that color or design was used for this tribute to Gino's Canto.
The design, overall, is a strong swirl of the creative process, not matter what the medium...phoenix rising, if you will..that part of the creative process when everything is going thru your mind but the exact definitions haven't formed yet. The hardest part of this piece was the choice to put part of it a little "off" ...discord/maelstrom/nothing fits....the creative process in the end wants perfection but I felt it couldn't be perfect because that part of the process that helps you get to the end result is sometimes long and difficult. So contrary to my usual obsession to match every seam exactly, some parts pay tribute to that letting go and finding it works very well in the end...you achieved the result you wanted all along!
Greens and golds: As I listened to Yonder Tree (Come to the Well) and Canto (Wayward Lover), I knew these two colors had to be included. The greens of course, for the great outdoors...the golds for the grain, the gold wedding band Gino so proudly wears. You will see circles constantly throughout this piece...I think of the circle as a whole in life...again, the wedding rings we wear...the formats used to make the music available to us...in vinyl (yes, we go back that far!) and the CD format we have now. The golds are also the highs in a very long productive career well rewarded. There is one gold fabric that reminds me of the flow of Canto, constantly moving outward.
The reds used are deep reds...again, the deep, rich, earthy colors of Italy...a tapestry we often see in works of Italian painting masters of the Renaissance. Red has always represented passion to me, and Gino is filled with passion for his music, and his family. The rust colored animal print...the grace and elegance of a big cat...Gino moving on stage...smooth but wild underneath...and Moon Over Madness comes to mind.
There is a dark brown print throughout, too, with a red center...this print brings to mind the Native American Indian...and Inka Studio...that place where Gino creates his music.
The bright blue that frames the interior...blue to me has always represented faith....but sometimes faith seems to find a good hiding place inside us...thus, the blue line you see in the work is not steady and straight...at times, it is a strong steady line, and in others, in may be a very thin vein. In times of despair, we either get thru it with faith (Dea Speranza) or we loose faith completely. Gino, we have kept the faith in you...and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the years of fabulous music you have given us. E-mail us your words... The very FIRST reaction about the Gino Vannelli CANTO TV special at The Canadian CBC channel :
E-mail from : Sharon dated 18 June 2003. Subject : Canto on CBC... E-mail from : Gail dated 1 July 2003. Subject : Canto on CBC... My boyfriend and I are huge Gino Vanelli fans. We really dig the CD, "Storm at Sunup", and his new CD, "Canto", which should be out in the US, shorly. We watched Gino's Special, "Canto", on CBC, June 18th, @ 9 p.m., and thought Gino was fabulous! His music has changed for the better, and Canto should be his best CD, ever! If Gino happens to read this, my boyfriend, and I hope to hear from you via e-mail. With Warmest Regaurds, Gail & Pete E-mail from : Mieke in Holland dated 4 July 2003. Subject : CBC Canto Show Hai Trees/Barend, I just saw the CBC Canto show and it took my breath away. Gino is such a great singer and such a nice person. I finally saw another side of Gino, one that I never saw before. He's a very modest, likable, passionate, romantic, lovable, nice (shall I go on?) man. I guess he's the only one on earth with all these qualities (not meaning to offend anyone). Seeing him dancing with his mother, how proud must she be! And his brothers Joe and Ross, friends, even his uncles, pictures and movies from his father. It was all so overwhelming! Especially the views from the surroundings, how beautiful can nature be! Now I can imagine him sitting on a rock thinking all kinds of things and get inspired by nature (remember the seagull story?) And you know what I liked the most? The way he talkes about his family. He has a beautiful son and his wife is the love of his life, now isn't that great! I hope Gino and his family will get 150 years old and enrich us all those years with their great music and presence! By the way: I was there at the Copenhagen concerts and you actually see me. Now, isn't that something! Taped for life together with Gino, wow!!!! I'm going to cherish this tape for the rest of my life. Gino, someday I hope I get the change to thank you in person. If not you just have to read my mails! E-mail from : Ron in Holland dated 16 July 2003. Subject : CBC Dear Barend & Trees Just got the tape from Deborah ( a thousand thanks, love ) from the CBC Canto Show and i already saw it 5 times in a row. This is a amazing peace of television making ( compliments to the makers) a great documantary and a hommage to one of the greatest artist of our time. It's only 45 min. but it feels like a whole day, the makers of this masterpiece should be nominated for an Oscar. We now Gino is a great storyteller and it is alway's a joy to hear him talk ( that voice mmmm i never get used to it) goes right to your heart. Gino gave us a very moving inside look in his live. The scene in the barber shop makes you feel that your a part of something really special, to watch Gino point out the picture of his grandfather with his father( Russ Vannelli, what a magnificent characteristic face), his second father (uncle Vic) you feel a sort of close relation ship with the whole bunch. Seing Gino drinking wine, talking and dancing with his mother is a scene of beautiful unprecedented splendour. All the parts of Copenhagen where a sight for a sore eye ( right down my memory lane) We saw his wife Patricia ( now i now why he loves here haha) and Anton already almost bigger then Gino. Well, to make a short story long, for just a brief moment we where all witness of this great man's life.... and it left a awesome impression. Ron from Barendrecht, Holland. The very FIRST reaction about the complete Gino Vannelli CANTO CD :
From: Pierre Bourassa to: Barend.Trees@caiw.nl
I lock myself in this opcoming weekend and listen to CANTO the whole 48 hours......
I like to save this masterpiece in my mind! I am overwelmed with all this beauty right now so here is a short e-mail.
What a work... What a voice... Thanks Gino... thanks from Canada, Whitman.
Feel so happy since this record is born. Thank you both.
My dear friends: First of all, THANK YOU VERY MUCH DEEP FROM MY HEART for
leting us know about superfast link to Amazon Canada. It sounds classical, in part
theatrical and it has so romantic moments. I just love how all the
instruments sound. And I stand up and take off my hat to mention GINO's
voice, it's SUPERB!!! After this first impression Dea Speranza makes me get
chills. The bass, the perfect combination of strings and horns make me feel
like in heaven. In some moments so sad and in others so much hope; it's
amazing!!! The Last Dance is a delicious love song!!! The Last Days of
Summer is a very tender song!!! and hearing Gino sing in Spanish again, is
extraordinary. I love the arrangement of this song and Daniele Bonaviri is a
genius on acoustic guitar!!! Congratullations to Miss Janet Chvatal, she has
a priviledged voice and it combines with Gino's very well. I knew it was
going to be another work of art. But it has left me breathless!!! GINO... YOU ARE NUMBER ONE!!!
Best regards from Maru in Mexico.
Thanks to both of you for keeping the flame burning while Gino found himself again.
Truly a dream!!!
Another beautiful recording from the magnificent Gino Vannelli . He can tear your heart out with the warmth in his voice and give you chills with a high note that floats on and on. Mala Luna is magnificent. The tribute to his father is touching. Each song is beautiful.
AMAZING.,
THIS IS DEFINITIVELY THE BEST CD I HAVE. VANNELLI'S VOICE IS AMAZING AND SINCE THE FIRST TIME YOU HEAR HIM YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH HIM. THE 11 SONGS ARE JUST AMAZING. EVEN THE ONES IN ITALIAN. AFTER A FEW TIMES YOU HEAR THEM I CAN GUARANTEE YOU, YOU WILL START TO SING IN ITALIAN. HIS LYRICS ARE DEEP.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. WHAT A VOICE. SUCH PASSION! YOU WON'T REGRET BUYING THIS CD AND IT'S ALSO A PERFECT GIFT FOR THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE. GO AND GET IT!
My favorite is for sure THE LAST DANCE, I cannot get it from my mind a real Vannelli Brothers brain washer! Gino Vannelli's voice is amazing and I am still in shock! Have to
process this new Gino Vannelli album first, I had my doubts about this CANTO album, I ordered anyways because I have all Gino Vannelli's albums and I have NO regrets!! My Mom
listened to the album too and she said to me with a big smile : "I knew you can grow into music with this high quality" and we listened to CRAZY LIFE and CANTO and noticed the growth in greatness of Gino Vannelli's voice.
Dearest ....
I'm listening to CANTO again. Gino has surpassed his own genius and many talents.
In the past listening to "Moon Over Madness", I could hear that this was the obvious
direction for his talents to go. There is no other singer like Gino. His is truly the
voice of the Archangels. Thank you so much Barend and Trees for giving all of the
Gino Vannelli fans of the world the beautiful web sites.
Dear Barend & Trees:
Italians, like the French, cannot rock. But boy, can they belt out those love songs.
In his maturity, Gino Vannelli obviously recognizes this - turning his back on the pseudo-rock legacy created by his smash hit Black Cars back in the '80s and before that with his disco albatross People Gotta Move. He does anything but rock on his new opera album. That's right, opera. Original opera, to boot.
Call Canto a departure, but don't write it off as an experiment. These grand, soaring, beautiful pieces are buoyed to heavenly heights of movie soundtrack drama by expertly used orchestras, shimmering violins, waterfall-like Spanish guitars, you name it. And on top, sung with all the passion and sincerity he can muster, that's Amore! Big Amore.

Yesterday while at work my daughter called and left me a message. She informed my co-worker to “just tell my mom her cd has arrived”.
I don’t even know how to begin to express the emotions I was feeling when I started listening to Canto. Gino’s voice is so powerful and dynamic!!!! The love he possesses for his Italian heritage has enabled him to write and express himself with his gift of voice. While growing up my grandmother used to sing songs in Italian to me, ( nothing like Gino’s father’s voice, I’m sure, but how I yearn to hear them again) and my father always had Italian music playing in our home. This cd has touched my heart like no other. I personally feel this is Gino’s best work ever. Home is where the heart is. The reason why the songs for this cd came so easy to him tells me this cd took him back home revealing his heart, his passion and has completed the beginning of a new journey in his knew found life. Thank you Gino for touching my heart with “Canto”. You never cease to amaze me. I can’t wait to give my father this cd for Father’s Day, watch the expressions in his eyes and then say, Dad, this is Gino Vannelli………….NOW. - 21 - From: JAZZ to: Treebar@caiw.nl Subject: CANTO - Date : 17 May 2003.

Gino Vannelli has stayed on top of the music business because he has always found ways to discover new sounds and angles in which to appreciate his own music and voice. Like Peter Gabriel, and Sting. He has had the ability to move foward on every record he makes. I compare this CD with Bocelli and Canto is from my point of view, quite amazing as it shows how Gino Vannelli has matured over time. Also, I own a series of Gino Vannelli CD's and videos and each time Gino delivers something different and entretaining. - 34 - From: Andrea to: Barend.Trees@caiw.nl Subject: Happy Birthday to Gino the Voice - Date : 25 May 2003. It far surpasses anything I have read or heard about this album. As I read the words to the sings I was truly amazed (those that I could understand I dont speak or write Italian) but I dont believe you have to because to hear Gino sing it is enough. I truly wept when I heard this CD's version of PAROLE PER MIO PADRE. It is so beautiful its hard to keep my eyes from tearing. What an honor it must have been to sing this for the POPE. I am sure that he in turn was honored by Gino's angelic voice and this beautiful melody. I do hope that when I go to Montreal, he will perform this tune. I really am looking forward to seeing him. And on the selfish side I do hope we can get spoiled by another of his fantasic works soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Home... and played Canto and it is an enjoyment with a BIG E of enjoy !!! Track 1 : Canto is alrealdy great, 2 : Parole Per Mio Padre is already well known and is on my list of favorites. Gino took Italian and French lessons especially for Canto. One of my other favorites is Una Sola Voce. The warmth in His voice and such a beautiful duet, Gino is now also schooled in classical music. This cd is already one of my favorites, it's really a listening cd and the quality is unsurpassed. Excuse me, but I have to say that I have much more respect for this cd than for It hurts To Be In Love,
it's also good but the quality of this Canto cd rises above all or beyond all! With this cd my stereo equipment stands out very clearly. - 44 - From: Tobias Burman to: Barend.Trees@caiw.nl Subject: Re: Canto - Date : 30 May 2003.

Maar nu is alles anders: de koudwatervrees is over en Canto klinkt hier dagelijks en niet echt zacht (en ik heb de buren nog niet horen klagen). Toch blijft The Last Dance mijn favoriet!
Prettig weekend!
English : But now it is completely different: The shiver on the brink is gone and the sounds of Canto are here daily and not really a soft sound.(And I did not hear the neighbours complain yet!) Still the Last Dance is my favorite! Hopefully (soon!?) there will be another cd released. I am waiting already...... (I think it is very annoying that the cd has a protection against copying and it also has it's own player's program when I play CANTO in my computer. I always make a copy for in my car (So the original cannot be stolen), but that is not going to happen this time. Well, finally I got to see GINO's CanadaAM performance from May 12th - Excellent !!!!!!
It appears he and the small orchestra were entertaining a group of about 40 people off in a different room through out the show (yeah to be in that audience eh). They were probably CTV employees or family and friends of the orchestra. The orchestra consisted of David Goldblatt on piano (he is the cutest most talented eh!), drums (a David Goldblatt look alike lol), upright bass, 3 (yes I said three) violins, cello, & a flute. No guitar. I've never seen the other musicians before so would guess they are from the Toronto Orchestra - but what do I know eh.
And then the BEST BEST EVER (whoever planned this - probably GINO - is a genius) ending! The show ended with GINO singing the lyrics "can you give this man One Last Dance" in his best vocals ever and then just primarily the flute plays out......show Ends... WOW !!! I'm screaming YES YES YES !! - 51 - From: Gallo in Italy to: Treebar@caiw.nl Subject: CD "Canto" - 3 June 2003.

Yes canto is fantastic, in my opinion on Gino top 3. But i´ve got this
strange feeling when i listen to Canto, a feeling like as if, in a way, it
is to be the last CD from Gino ever!!, (last day of summer) a feeling like
he has been through all his music. Like it is his last word, last song, last
entrance...............dont know why - just a feeling! - 55 - From: Alberto Dominelli to: Barend.Trees@caiw.nl Subject: Canto - 4 June 2003.
Hi there, As a perfectionist like Gino "Perfectionist has no life", I just wanted to inform you, that unfortunately, some italian translations are wrong, I imagine probably coming from the automatic correction from "Word" (thank you Bill Gates). It would be nice if you can inform the record company about those mistakes. On "Canto" song there are also something missing words "Apro gli occhi e cosi vedo".
To sum up, "Canto" is a real "Opera d'arte"/"Chef d'oeuvre", I love this album and will enjoy it for long. I take also the opportunity to wish all my best to Gino and happy birthday. - 56 - From: D. in California to: Barend and Trees in Holland Subject: In love with Canto - 5 June 2003.

Hello, we both are touched by Gino Vannelli's Canto and his voice is so beautiful! - 58 - From: Barend and Trees in Holland. to: Treebar@caiw.nl Subject: Gino Vannelli's super MASTERPIECE : Canto - 6 June 2003. What can we say ?? What can we write ?? We are so very proud of Gino !!! And we thank Gino from the bottoms of our hearts for this great gift which we will enjoy forever.... Gino's 14th album is something different with so much and so many of His talents bundled in 11 masterpieces, Gino's voice is an explosion of His feelings and emotions a deep explosion from His heart and from His deepest instincts !!! Gino Vannelli sings yes so He is..... Gino Vannelli is a singer, yes we know, but again with His 14th album He knows how to give us a BIG shock in a very good way with His voice, this sound of Gino's voice is really unbelievable and gives us a BIG, BIG kick again, we almost try to sing along and throw out our emotions in a way like we never ever did before....
We are so proud of GINO VANNELLI !!!!!!!!!!!!
The first song : CANTO flows through our home now and it makes us feel glorious some how and in some way...... Amazing........... We have seen and heard Gino Vannelli so many times now and still HE gets us touched and moved in our hearts and very deep in our hearts with HIS music and voice. CANTO deserves more than 5 stars, at least 10 BIG stars on all the cd shops on the internet !!!
The sound of this CANTO cd is incredible and also in our car, we only have a simple stereo cd-player, but at home the sound is even more breathtaking. BIG and DEEP goose-bumps !!!! MALA LUNA : Should be played by all orchestra's on this planet !! Wow !!! This complete work of art is the fullest magnificence !! We hope this is a good English / American word. The Flamenco guitar sounds and the explosion of the orchestra and than Gino's voice makes it all like a play and you can imagine the picture with the music... Our reviews get boring because we do not know enough English words to express ourselves but we try to write what we feel while listening to Gino Vannelli's MUSIC !! We hope our neighbours are happy with the new songs, because we have to play loud !! How Gino gets this drama in His music and in His voice is unbelievable and still we can enjoy the music even when the story is so sad, very sad ! DEA SPERANZA is about hope and hope is beautiful. Hope is a reason to life for so these musical notes are so emotional and such a delight to listen that we almost cannot write about this SUPBERB composition and we saw and heard it live on stage with a BIG orchestra and when the violins started and Gino did DEA............ that was it...... only tears, only tears can flow as nature intended! Gino Vannelli's voice and music goes through our bones and veins like some kind of addictive drug (we think) because we could not stop listening and we are so thankful and grateful for these new musical works of art. We always feel very emotional but now with this CANTO CD it is really hard to stop the tears and the deep emotions and we both are NOT ashamed for these feelings and thank God we both have the same feelings and we can always talk about Gino Vannelli and HIS life's work, we read Gino's poetic lyrics out loud and talk about the meaning and the way we both understand these poetic words. And we have discussions how some lyrics fit into our own lives and how we feel about these topics. And have some arguments !!! Ha ha !!! Thanks Gino for all the great translations in the cd booklet, with these translations we can even more feel and understand the emotions and the spirit of your musical and lyrical works of art. Gino Vannelli will never ever understand the joy en the lessons in the meaning of life HE brings to us through HIS music, voice and lyrics....... We always thought we did not deserve to enjoy life but Gino Vannelli teached us different in the past 13 years............ Since HIS very first live concert in Holland, that really changed our lives in a very good way! But we can only say this afterwards........ Trees thinks WAYWARD LOVER IS A SUPER TOP MUSICAL and LYRICAL WORK OF ART but after a minute she says DEA SPERANZA and than again CANTO, IL VIAGGIO or MALA LUNA it is impossible to choose a favorite song because with each song there are different feelings and emotions. With the Italian "A ROSE IN DECEMBER" we get a different emotion because the English version gets to us more deep because of the direct understanding of the English words..... This pure song makes our eyes wet immediately.......... The Last Dance : it's a nice song, we can sing along and we can enjoy it but, yes there is a but..... we cannot compare it with the other songs, in Holland we call this song : a "meezinger" a kind of sing along song.... but that is what this cd is about extremes in music !!!!! And that's what we love about the Master of Music : Gino Vannelli !!! One thing is for sure : Gino has a golden voice and we did not know yet about this high quality, we mean the way he reaches the notes and the way Gino's voice is one with the heart and soul of His own music.
Barend loves CANTO, THE LAST DAYS OF SUMMER, UNA SOLA VOICE, PAROLE PER MIO PADRE and WAYWARD LOVER with the celtic flute, amazing sound this celtic flute! We really cannot choose favorites, all 11 songs The voice of the Lady Janet Chvatal gets to us too, my oh my, she can break glass with this crystal clear voice, really breathtaking. Gino Vannelli's voice and it does not matter how high or how low or how HE sings we can ALWAYS hear the words very clearly !!! On the CANTO cd Gino Vannelli's voice is super top and when we heard Gino sing live in Copenhagen we were in total shock by HIS voice and we mean in a very good positive way! During some moments Gino's voice took our breath clean away and it still does when we listen to the CANTO songs.
"Joli Coeur" : This song is absolute something else and different, that intrigues and puzzles us both very much.........
Maybe because of the fact that we are first loves and we always will be..... The music really gets to us... we listened and deeply enjoyed the CANTO cd and we can recommend CANTO to real and true music lovers. We cannot have any criticism only praise, BIG praises !!! YOU ARE THE BEST GINO VANNELLI - that's all we can say!!! And we both really, really mean this!! So we hope there are more people in this world who buy CANTO because this new Gino Vannelli cd will make their lives richer !!!
Thanks from our hearts Gino!! Love, Barend and Trees in Holland. - 59 - From:TJ to: Treebar@caiw.nl Subject: Canto - 7 June 2003.

Because Gino Vannelli is one of the greatest artists of this time. All lyrics are written by himself. All music is composed bt Himself, He plays different musical instruments Himself and even the mixing and producing of different albums He does Himself ! His voice has a tonal purity connected with a special sound and colour and with a reachness of many octaves. In freedom He uses His complete artistic talents. Every album is always surprising, different and averse from all commercial limitations and streams in music.
His latest album : CANTO, sung in different languages with classical influences is of a breathtaking beauty. Especially in this time a risky combination. Radio 2 is my favorite listening pleasure, also in this time a daring combination of all styles and all times.
English : Ofcourse I already heard A ROSE IN DECEMBER on the other CD (of Montserrat C.), but I did not know the deep thoughts behind this song. Very touching and you may certainly know that after reading the thoughts and the meaning of this song... The lyrics and the listening of the song... I had to brush away a few tears.
I think the cd composition is technical TOP, really TOP. I think, after the hearing of this cd, that gino can establish Himself as a composer for film music. - 73 - From: Clem en Lidewij to: Barend & Trees in Holland Subject: Gino Vannelli!!!!!!- 20 June 2003.

English : - 74 - From: Jo in Canada to: Barend & Trees in Holland Subject: About CANTO (but without the spelling mistakes) - 1 July 2003. I bought CANTO the day it came out but I have yet to really dig into it. I'm too involved right now in catching up with lost time. Since mid-April, I've been refurnishing my GV collection, and re-immersing myself in chronological order, mostly. I haven't explained that I first came into contact, and fell in love, with GV's work in the mid-seventies. I was very young then but, it seems, intellectually /emotionally mature enough to be greatly moved by the seriousness of his lyrics, the Erotics of his stage persona, and nurtured by the complex lushness of his fusion-like approach to music. It's strange because I was only 14 when --how can I put it ?,-- GV "happened" to me but I was responding to him, to his work, the way I do now... except that now, I have 20 years of Academia, and critical /analytical writing, in me ! And I'm a woman, I'm not a girl. There is something strangely timeless at work here... I'm not sure I understand it. I'm also realizing that GV's work (everything he represents) was very instrumental in shaping who I am, who I've become. Except, I had forgotten how much. Possibly because our paths parted with the "Black Cars" album... I was intrigued when he signed with Verve and produced jazz albums but, for numerous reasons, I didn't accept his artistic invitation then ;-( He kept coming to the Montreal Jazz Festival, and I was aware of most of his concert visits to MTL, but still he eluded me. I remember sensing that I was missing out on something important when I read the amazing reviews which his 1999 Spectrum concert received... To make a long story short, what happened recently, is that while I was in line to pay for some books, I saw his new Millenium Collection Best Of CD, and without thinking, bought it. Was it nostalgia ? It happens when you're 41 and trying to measure where you've been, where you're going, who you are, who you can still be... Well, the CD stayed in my purse for a few days until I saw an amazing picture of GV in a local newspaper. He was making the front page of the Entertainment section, because of "Canto", but when my eyes fell on the close-up photograph, I didn't recognize him. I thought I was seeing a very close friend of mine, a peruvian filmmaker, now living in Quebec. So I thought to myself: "Wow, what is my Friend doing in the newspaper ? I'll have to call him !" (LOL) I pick up the page, I unfold it, and there, in big bold black letters: Gino Vannelli. Ahhh ! I actually let out a little scream and dropped the newspaper, I swear it was burning my fingers. I couldn't believe it ! I couldn't believe the jungian synchronicity of this "sign". I couldn't believe the resemblance between my Friend and GV, I couldn't believe that I had never seen it before, and I've known Carlos for 18 years (they look like twins - how could I not see that ?), and, more importantly, I was absolutely pulled in by what I saw on GV's expression: serenity, a vivid intelligence, and his timeless androgenous beauty. In a split-second, I measured the years I had spend away from his work and felt this amazing urge to understand what had pulled me away, and why I had bought the Best Of CD. I felt a great desire to reconnect with what he had given me in the past, then fill in the gaps of the missing years, and explore his recent work. All this with a special friend in mind, a French colleague, Nathalie L. (she's the female love of my life :-) with whom I explore and analyze, and create... We're very involved in investigating Erotics in Art and performance, how it is linked to Philosophy and spirituality, whether it be in cinema or music. So anyway, for the past 2 months, as I've said, I've been immersing myself anew in GV's work, but wanting to do things in order, I've not listened closely to "Canto" yet. Not the way I like to "listen closely" ;-) My first impressions are very positive, of course: there's a rare sincerity and craftsmanship at work here. Some songs have already left me breathless, Mala Luna being my favorite, I believe. A Rose In December is amazing too. And I'm very moved by his quebecois accent when he signs in french ;-) What I feel less of a kinship to are some of the arrangements which, at times, make the album sound like those of Andrea Bocelli. Not that that’s *bad*, per se. To each it’s own. But my own taste runs along more adventurous musical experimentations. I spontaneously respond better to his fusion of classical and jazz on “A Pauper In Paradise”, for instance (“Black and Blue” has got to be one the most beautifully written and performed song, ever – and he did that at such a young age, it’s uncanny). And to his fusion of pop and jazz, specifically the new arrangements with which he transfigured some of his past material when he toured with Alain Caron.
But, like I said, I still have to listen to “Canto” in a more profound and sensitive manner. I’ll tell you more at a later date :) And I’m sure his July 6 concert will give me the opportunity to do just that.
Well, I have to go now… - 75 - From: H.I. to: Treebar@caiw.nl Subject: >>By he's got a new cd - 2 July 2003.

Hi Barend and Trees,
You might want to post this info on your website.
In the states the Barnes & Noble bookstore/cd store is promoting his cd.
It's selling for $16.99 and they have a lot of copies of it.
It's also featured on the listening station so you can sit and listen to
each track.
This is very good promotion and at least keeps Gino's picture and name out
there for
his fans to see. Barnes and Noble is a huge bookstore chain in the USA and
in most
big cities. This is a good thing for Gino. This store also has a website
much like Amazon.com. - 80 - From: Andreas in Germany to: Barend.Trees@caiw.nl Subject: Gino Vannelli - 13 august 2003.
Dear Trees, dear Barend, It's quite amazing that Gino's voice , the lyrics and the whole musical work touch heart and soul immediately. During the last days, I tried to remember, if there is another singer/songwriter/musician comparable to Gino , whom I know for more than twenty years and I must say there are many. But there is no one else like Gino, who has turned from a pop star of the eighties to the elder musician/songwriter with a serious jazz and classic approach. One might say: Like an exceptionnel Bordeaux Grand Cru: If it's of a good year and an good chateaux it comes better and better with the years when you keep the bottles well. And Gino is doing voice training beside language coaching and song writing. He's becoming better from year to year. Also the arrangements of his older songs for orchestra are fantastic. It's always a pleasure to listen to this tunes. So Gino should go on also looking back to the A&M /Polygram/Dreyfuss years of his carreer with respect. He wrote really amazing songs during these years and there a some tunes like "Black and Blue", "Valleys of Valhalla", "Pauper in Paradise", "War Suite" which I'm still waiting for to be rearranged and performed by Gino and the Metropole or the DRU.
I hope the CD will do well in Ca/Us and Europe. I'm quite sure that it will do well in the Netherlands as Gino has airplay and TV appearances. Also your work on the Internet - dear Trees and dear Barend - will help to keep things going!!!
Kindes regards from Osnabrück in Germany and thank you very much for your work!!! - 81 - From: Rosemaria, USA to: Treebar@caiw.nl Subject: Gino Vannelli - 23 august 2003.
Hi, I was talking with DJ (Gino's manager) and he said they are working on Toronto and Miami among other cities. Also, that next year they are going to go all out with exposure for the CD and a tour. Hopefully Gino will perform with an orchestra in Toronto and Miami. Even if he doesn't I'm sure I will go to Tornonto, (as long as I have vacation approved), since I have family there. Miami is for sure since it is only an hour away from where I live. - 82 - From: Laura, USA to: Barend.Trees@caiw.nl Subject: Gino - 24 august 2003.

Hi Barend and Trees!
It took me a few listens to really feel the full impact of the CD, as I recognized it was nothing at like a series of light pop songs, that are catchy at first where one can sing along and clap to the beat. I REALLY enjoy sections of "Mala Luna".. especially the middle instrumental section, and that emotional sounding a la Schindlers' List violin near the end..but I find that classical guitar that plays through it a little much at times.. and feel that much of that could have been omitted, as well as some vocal sections that don't seem to add nothing really to this song..and i wish Gino had taken a little more time examining the final mix of this song, as he rarely is guilty of this being even a question...Hmmm, well maybe a bit of the first movement of "Pauper In Paradise"... but then again, even sections of some of Beethoven's works dragged on and on a bit too... "The Last Dance" is pretty, as well as Wayward Lover... but i feel Gino has done songs ilke these, much better in the past.. but I still like them nonetheless. Something more like "Moon Over Madness", or "Constantly Constatine" would have fit in much better here. It seems like he 'dumbed-down' considerably here to appease the masses. I want this CD to do well, and it seems Gino is trying very hard to have people hear it. I drive a shuttle van from the airport, and i play the CD on the deck, and get very favourable responses from it. And almost everybody is SO surprised that it's GIno Vannelli. The songs are much different than previous works, but to me his voice still sounds like Gino. And to me, there is no one that sings better, Often when i listen to operatic artists, I cringe when they hit the high long loud notes, but whenever Gino hits those on this CD, they sound as beautifully controlled as ones in the lower register... and are pleasing to the ear.. without sacrificing any strength or power. In the end I find it an impressive and enriching work of very original contemporary composition, arrangement --vocal and instrumental performance. The style may be operatic, yet it still sounds very hip, very fresh. It will deserve all the accolades it receives now, and for years to come. Pure artistry is a rare gift. Artistry that is as durable over the years of Gino, such as Gino's is even rarer, and he remains to this day by far my favourite musical artist... as I think he is yours too.
Gino mentioned at the mini-concert at the CNE grounds in June that he was planning FULL concert in Toronto later this year, probably at Massey Hall.
I will have to pay for this one though I think, but Massey Hall is even CLOSER to where we live than this past one was!..Ohhh i DO like this city! - 85 - From:Bruno Le flanchec BLF to: Treebar@caiw.nl Subject: Canto - 14 September 2003.

Once in a while an extraordinary work of musical art and sentimental beauty comes along. Gino Vannelli’s “Canto” album has all of the qualities that can satisfy a musical journey. Passion, faith, wonder and hope contained in the lyrics and most graceful of music are just a few emotional places you will experience. There are (3) three beautiful songs sung in English and the remaining sung in Italian, French and Spanish When songs can be heard in a foreign language that one does not know and still, an emotional nerve is struck, that is awesome. Mr. Vannelli’s voice has risen to Grand Heights along with his music and I say to you “… you will want to hear more and more”. - 98 - From: Kate in the Netherlands to: Treebar@caiw.nl Subject: Canto - 14 February 2004.

Dear Barend and Trees; I discovered your website several years ago and check it frequently. I have never felt I had anything to contribute to your wonderful site, of which you do a fabulous job on, so the review was the first time I have submitted anything to you.
Over the past years, when Gino would come out with a new album, I was
always disappointed at first with each new song. I would listen to them
over & over wondering where was the old Gino. After about 2 or 3 times
listening to the new songs, I would start to like them until each new
CD would become my new favorite. - 101 - From: Sharon in Canada to: Treebar@caiw.nl Subject: canto - 17 May 2004.
Hello to Barend & Trees - 102 - From: Domenic Cusmano in Canada to: Treebar@caiw.nl Subject: Gino Vannelli Strikes a New Chord with Canto - 14 June 2004.
After his last two CDs were commercial flops, Gino Vannelli decided it was time to throw in the towel.
After a self-imposed five-year intermission, the Montreal native who turned 50 last year is back with a new record. A collection of eleven songs, Canto merges contemporary, classical, pop, and Celtic influences. A cut even features a Flamenco guitar. But more surprising is that Vannelli sings the tracks in four languages. Originally written in English, the lyrics were translated by "carefully selected international translators ... foregoing the literal translation in an effort to reveal the spirit of the original text." Vannelli even worked with a vocal coach to "ensure that his pronunciation was flawless." Six of the eleven tracks are in Italian, three in English, and one each in French and Spanish. Unlike much of Vannelli's previous work, Canto is virtually devoid of heavy synthesizer and electronically assembled sounds. What one finds instead, for the most part, is crisp and clear classical arrangements on occasionally dissonant chords - evidence of Vannelli's ineluctable affinity for jazz. "Maurice Ravel, one of the fathers of modern music, said the most interesting music fuses at least two elements together," says Vannelli. "To me, all exciting works of music were, in the beginning, considered hybrids." Listening to Canto, particularly the Italian tracks, one is reminded of Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli. Allowing his voice to soar, Vannelli at times verges on the operatic. "Something happened when I started singing in Italian, and I wasn't using English phrasing and vocabulary. The phonetic phenomenon about Mediterranean languages is that they allow the voice to reach passionate heights that are ofttimes considered melodramatic or just plain bad taste in English, particularly in contemporary music." Interestingly, Vannelli sings a duet with soprano Janet Chvatal on three of the six cuts in Italian. Canto is a complex work, both musically and lyrically. The themes being explored are often introspective and personal. The title track evokes the singer's own decision to give music one more try: "Con il cuore canto e quindi sono." In a track titled The Last Days of Summer, Vannelli invokes the inevitability of the passing of time and intones: "My father warned of the waning years / What every man goes through / I thought him weak and too fraught with fear / To see his tragic point of view." In Dea Speranza, composed after the horrendous events of September 11, 2001, he implores: "Dea Speranza / Tu adesso dove sei ... / Dimmi dove s'è nascosto l'amore ... / Dimmi che la vita è bella." Canto is a flourish which will appeal to listeners in search of elaborate melodies and lyrics to match. It will likely surprise but ultimately please Vannelli fans, and probably earn him new ones.

CANTO is magnificient! The cd itself, although
I only understood some of the Italian words, appealed to me on an emotional
