Gino Vannelli composes a competition
Title:
Knight of the Road.
Instructions: Painting or drawing of a traveling man with a straw hat and a tote bag walks a lonesome road towards the sun rising behind a hill. GINO VANNELLI.
DEADLINE: Christmas 2007.
Knight of the Road /chorus:
I'm a knight of the road I'm a bird of passage
Only passing through this land
A boy born with a twinkle in his eye
And a tote bag in one hand
I'm a dreamer, a lover, I ain't no other
Than a gypsy rollin' along
I came into this world
And I'll go out with a song
Let us (editors B&T) try to tell you in a few words about Gino Vannelli's amazing request:
Dear Gino Vannelli fans, friends, music-lovers and everybody else on this globe,
think about this and allow your creative minds to paint or draw Gino Vannelli's thoughts, you know the music, you know the emotions, you know Gino Vannelli, feel it and paint or draw those emotions. You can become the winner of this competition and see your painting or drawing as the cover of the next Gino Vannelli album!!! That must be a great reward for a GINO VANNELLI music-lover...
At the moment Gino Vannelli and Dutch musicians but also American musicians are recording demo's for this new album with new songs like: Woman On Top Don't Give Up On Me Rosebud is dead Gipsy Days Knight of the Road Fall Flower and many more...
Gino asked to spread the word about this competition where you can draw or paint your own work of art in your own style in combination with Gino Vannelli's instructions which are printed on the top of this KNIGHT OF THE ROAD web page...
Questions? Rules? Laws? In General NO rules and no laws just paint or draw and express your creativity in an artistic way...
When you are satisfied and finished, e-mail us the pictures of your work. You can be sure that Gino Vannelli Himself and Gino's Wife will see your art... Sofar the only real thing you can win is the honour you will feel when you see the new cd cover of Gino Vannelli's next album. When you win you have to say goodbye to you your drawing or painting though because it will live on in Gino Vannelli's home in the USA or Holland...

(1): An e-mail from Terry in the USA dated 17 August 2007 with the subject: Album Cover!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Oh WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! Of all times for my arm to be broke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've thought of a million different designs already!!! Only I think a lot of fans are going to be disappointed not to see his beautiful, handsome face on the front of the cd!!!!!!!!!!!!! He better have a lot picts inside!!!! And I'm NOT kidding here! People wait too long between cds. And the packaging is 50% of the fun!
I think he should be riding/sitting in an open boxcar like a "hobo" with fingerless gloves, ratty black felt hat, holes in the bottom of his boot. He can be sleeping on some straw with the hat over his eyes. Sun's starting to rise behind the car. Terry.

Hi from Friesland, I am cleaning already my paintbrushes and I let my creative mind spin. My English is not that good to write a whole story but be sure I will get something on paper to show to you. Thanks I have already fun with these Gino Vannelli instructions... Peter and Family.

(4): A second e-mail from Amy C. in Kansas, USA dated 25 August 2007 with the subject: a little bit about myself
My name is Amy. I was the one that sent you that Gino painting (ENTRY 1) earlier. If you ever check out YouTube.com, I post as "Snootzie78". How I got the nickname Snootzie is after what my dad sometimes calls me. I don't know where he got it from. The 78 is after the year I was born. I am 29 years old (Age is really nothing but a number). I am also a cellist who plays principal in a community symphony orchestra.
BTW, if Gino plans to do a concert soon in my area, I would love to play in his backup orchestra. I can try to recruit a couple other string members from my orchestra.
Question Editors: "Is this a painting or a drawing????????"
Actually, it is a painting.
Question Editors: "We see something made on the computer or are we wrong???"
I did this on Microsoft Paint a couple days ago using my computer at home. Another GV friend e-mailed me info about Gino's new album coming out, and I read the instructions carefully on what to do--kind of get my creative juices flowing here.
Let me tell you a little bit behind the painting:
I tried to imagine that Gino is traveling down a lonely highway or paved asphalt road. It's a typical hot sweltering summer day in Kansas (about 95º in the shade) and the sun is slowly starting to go down. Gino is hot, sweating, thirsty, and very very tired. And Gino's feet are hurting from all that walking--his shoes are not designed for excessive walking or excessive heat. His car broke down in the middle of the road and he's itching to get home. Gino is carrying a very heavy tote bag full of clothes, necessities, writing material, and other misc items. And his arms are also sore from carrying that tote bag. It also said that Gino was wearing a straw hat. I had in mind a yellow straw hat kind of like the one Curious George's owner wears.
I am not exactly Bob Ross material, but I thought it would be fun.
I am new around here. That's probably why you didn't see my name before. I was referred to B&T by the same person I told you about earlier who told me about the painting contest for Gino Vannelli.
I am from the U.S.A. I live in the middle of Kansas to be exact. Gino rarely makes appearances here in my neck of the woods. I wish he would do so. We would love to have him here, and I'd do anything to go see him in concert.
I consider myself a Gino admirer. I have been for quite some time now, but hated to admit it. I was 2 1/2 years old when his song "Living Inside Myself" came out on the radio (just goes to show how old I am), and it's been one of my favorite songs ever since. And well....one of the ladies I used to work for a little over a year ago is a Gino Vannelli fan, so there. Sad to say, I do not have any Gino Vannelli albums in my collection at the moment, but would love to purchase his new one as soon as it is released. Amy C.
(5): An e-mail from Marilyn L. in Québc, Canada dated 27 August 2007 with the subject: My participation to the competition
Hello Barend and Trees,
I hope you are doing fine.
It is with pleasure that I am sending my drawing (ENTRY 2) for the cover of the new
album of Gino. I am not really good in drawing but I wanted to participate
to the competition anyway, because I had a lot of fun doing it. It must be
fun to see all the things that people are sending too. The great winner get
his/her work on the cover of the new album; the second winner get tickets
show, and the third winner get the new cd of Gino, Knight of the Road.
Wouldn't that be something. Just a suggestion.
Have fun looking at those great work of art from people all over the world.
I am looking forward to the new album. I hope that Gino will find what he is
looking for, for the cover of his new cd.
Keep on the great work.
Bye, au revoir.

Hallo Barend & Trees.

Herewith I e-mail you my "creative" attachment (ENTRY 3) for the cd cover, I am sure I will not win but It was fun to be a participant. It did not become a walking man but a sitting man who enjoys the sun rise together with his dog, a Berner Sennerdog (the dog we have ourselves at home, and I felt that it is fun to make this into my creation)
I hope this arrives in your e-mail box in good condition, if not I am sure you will let me know... dear greetings from Wil Spelbos

Dear Barend and Trees:
Attached is my entry into the Knight of the Road competition. This entry 8 is a
24 inch by 24 inch oil painting on canvas. I also couldn't resist
messing with the idea of a CD cover (entry 9) and sent it also in a separate email
because I was afraid the files were too large to send together, and I
included the photo my husband took of myself and Gino at the Suncoast
concert in Las Vegas. I can't tell you how much fun I had doing this
painting....I can only hope that everyone else who entered this contest
enjoyed themselves as much as I did.
Please let me know if you received these files, and thanks again SO MUCH
for all you do to promote Gino and his work. There is NO ONE better!!!

Dear Gino,
My name is Dave Zeiher and I saw on your website about the art contest. I reeeeeeaaallly want to send in my work and I know the deadline is now but I'm stuck on a cruise ship gig and was not able to find the acrylics I need. I have a deep appreciation and deep connection to your music from way back. I play guitar and have been for decades and used to call Carlos Rios from the road back in 79' and I learned all his solos note for note and you are one of the top people on my "wanna work with" list. I have a pretty good resume on guitar with real names, jazz festivals etc. Billy Cobham and George Duke, Flora Purim and Airto, Les McCann, etc...I've been painting since I was a kid, and I flipped out when I saw your contest. I need maybe one more week to get the supplies out here at sea and I know it may be too late but I would be thrilled to enter. Any time you want a guitar demo as well, I will send it. You are a genius and I don't use that word often. God bless and Merry Christmas from one of your biggest and most loyal fans, attached are a couple of examples of my painting style so you will know I'm for real....Dave. ENTRY 19 with 4 examples...

When i was walking through those hills, i still remember that lonely cross, that lonely grave..." (Gebaseerd op;None so beautifull as the brave)
Nou... hierbij dus!
En als je geen reet begrijpt van wat ik ermee bedoel; bel me dan even! Prettige Kerst!
Laat wat van je horen!
Liefs, Clem. See entry (21)
English/Engels:
(27): An e-mail from Clem van Lunteren in Holland, the Netherlands dated Tuesday 25 December 2007 with the subject: DESIGN KNIGHT OF THE ROAD.
Hi Barend and Trees,
I will take my chance on this...
Herewith, literally on the last moment (!), my design for the CD.
ATTENTION!!!! BEWARE!!!! This is only a DESIGN!!!!
Because the thing you see here is an illustration completely made of text!
In this case fake-text! Latin "fake"-text.
My idea is, when my idea is used or will be used, that the final text is the "story" of a "walking man" (Knight Of The Road")!
He, (Gino) relates during his walk (road) about everything he lived through. All the final real text talks about (almost) every song Gino wrote! But not in Gino's real words and lyrics! It will be fun for the fans to discover these texts and to learn which Gino Vannelli songs I am writing about in these texts. And also to discover how many Gino songs I used for this design...
To illustrate my idea here is an little example how a part of the text should look like: "When i was walking through those hills, i still remember that lonely cross, that lonely grave..." (Based on "None So Beautiful As The Brave")
In the first instance I choose for the design because it goes too far now at this point in time to put the final text inside already.
The final result will be exactly like my design! And I will do that hand-written!
My attention also goes out to readability.
If it is made in a size of a cd than it will be readable.
Reduce the attached JPG to 12cm and see what happens.)
But you can always think about a bigger fold-out cd booklet.
Well... Here it is!
And when you do not understand nothing of this all and what I mean with this; please call me!
Merry Christmas! And let me hear something! Love, Clem. See entry (21)

artistry and talent submitted by the fans for the new cd.
