This is a part of a Spine magazine review about this compilations cd with a Gino Vannelli song. Spiritland: The Funk & Soul Of Blue Eyed Rock is some kinda wonderfool, neatly filing trainspotter-worthy breaks (Honk's mesmerising 'Hesitation' is like Chicago without the cold wind) next to dubious career highlights (Elkie Brooks channeling Aretha's holy spirit via a band that sound like they’ve never been near a church).
Compilations like this often get drenched in Americana but here Brewster balances the scales neatly. John & Beverly Martyn serve up soul in a truly British manner with a gorgeous melancholic grace (Womack & Womack they ain't), Elkie Brooks is as British as bread pudding, Savoy Brown offer an average facsimile of some good ol' rock but Mighty Baby get track title of the week for 'Egyptian Tomb', psyche-lite that your current Myspace indie favourite could learn a sax break or two from. Canadian poster boy Gino Vannelli hollers his way through 'People Gotta Move On' and all hairspray breaks loose whilst Chicago show up for nearly eight minutes of pompous bluster that is ‘Happy Cause I’m Going Home’ – at least they had the courtesy to turn the bass player up and leave the medallion men vocals at home.
It's a 2 CD box with 14 songs each cd so a total of 28 songs. Disc 1 number 9 :
