Hoi Barend & Trees.

Hi Barend & Trees.
Gino in Maastricht... We looked forward to this event with a lot of pleasure, however this time but we still had fun and we love to do this for a Gino concert.

When we arrived in cosy Maastricht we were lucky to watch the soundcheck for a while where we could chit chat with Gino's biggest fans...Barend and Trees.

And than the waiting before Gino's concert...luckely we could spend some time with our fanfriends Marian and Ron and even Werner from Germany was there to experience this evening with Gino again.

At last the big moment was there where we all waited for.....The performance could start. After the first songs we saw immediately that there was something badly wrong with Gino's sound transmitter. Big sound failure was in the air... And I was very afraid for a short moment that this could be a very short concert...but thank God, after some knockabouts and throwing with equipment (hahaha) everything went well so we could enjoy Gino and His Dutchband.
(Those guys are so good and Thijs gave an excellent saxophone solo!)

Gino was super again and I could see all the faces around me with this glow of joy !!!!

After the concert was a signing session again, unbelievable, Gino has this patience to give attention to all those people !!! INCREDIBLE !!! And in spite of all the madness Ron and I could go to Gino together, and this feels so special again and again and over again !!!!!! Now we look forward again to Zoetermeer next Sunday............Yes it's a great Gino weekend again !!!!
Love, Rob & Wil

An e-mail from Regina (Cologne/Germany) dated Wednesday 25 March 2009 with the subject: Gino's concert in Maastricht

Dear Trees,
Please tell Gino my deepest thanks for his beautiful music in Maastricht last Friday.
I am great fan of his music for more than 20 years but it was the first time I could see him live. It was also an important moment of my life to come so close to him, but I was too shy and overwhelmed to say more than "Gino, you are great". He is simply the greatest! No question the band was very good and the guys deserve our thanks, too.

You may remember me, I was with Werner and he introduced us to each other (please see picture enclosed). I enjoyed speaking to you that evening. As the Seabottom Festival is obviously Gino's last (in Europe?) for the next months I will drive to Lelystad on Saturday, if the weather conditions are fine enough, and we might happen to meet there. It would be a pleasure for me.
Best regards, Regina (Cologne/Germany)

A few words from the editors (B&T) dated 6 April 2009:

Beautiful and funny ride from the green heart of Holland to the hilly south of Holland, first to the radio station L1 Maastricht which was great fun. The women at the reception were very enthusiastic and were grouping together to say that Gino Vannelli was in the building. We walked to the radio studio and the DJ was a kind young man... Funny to be in a real radio studio, for Gino it's pretty normal but for the editors it's a big treat... You can see the slideshow at the beginning of this web page about this radio studio. Gino was in the mood and the interview went well... The dj asked us a few things too like years and dates... What a shock to realize that you are live on a radio station at that moment hahahaha.... And another funny thing was that every minute another person walked through the corridor along the studio window to peep inside and look at Gino... So funny to see...

We went to the theater at the Vrijthof for the soundcheck and the musicians arrived too so Barend could help with their musical instruments, which always feels good to be useful... We had coffee and a sandwich and Gino inspected the stage, for us it was a nice long soundcheck and dinner after the soundcheck........ Remember that wine Theo??? aaarrrggghhhhhh!!!! Thank God we had the guts to say something about it because this wine was really rotten to the core. But they made it all right with a new glass of good wine... Dinner was good and we enjoyed it together!

This Maastricht concert was so unique again, unique in different ways... Gino who could not hear nothing for 3 almost 4 songs, NO NOTHING through His ears because the transmitter on His pants belt did not work. Wrong equipment, bad batteries, whatever but it did NOT work!!! Gino could have hurt His voice, His ears and His throat but He still sang like there was nothing wrong, amazing... The audience could not hear the difference, you all know Gino, He gives Himself for 10.000% and goes on singing like everything is OK but no it's really NOT OK, Hans Eijkenaar, the Drummer looked very surprised when he saw the transmitter flying over his drums... Because in the meantime in between the first songs Gino threw His transmitter 3 times across the stage to the stage-engineer in such a hard way we could hardly see it go... So sad for Gino but during the 4th song it worked again...

No need to tell you how fantastic this show was in spite of the sound equipment. The band was really good and we too are very proud of all the musicians... Great to see Hans Eijkenaar drum Brother to Brother with such powerful arms and we love Erik Rutjes play the guitar in A GOOD THING and the bass-guitar of Theo de Jong was super strong again in People Gotta Move... The percussion sounds of Eddie Conard swinged and he adds more vocal sounds too and gives it all more, how do you say that? More musical harmony and rhythm... The Brass was great too, we are proud of you guys Thijs van Otterloo with the saxophone is so dedicated and plays with more than his heart and Ron Oligschlaeger on trombone and Charlie Biggs on trumpet added their beauty to Gino Vannelli's music...Charlie Biggs was a new face in the band but a very nice man. And Karel Boehlee of course, he speaks music with his face, his expressions are unique and the way Gino and Karel did CANTO was also unique... What a joy to listen to this Dutch Band!

The theater was very crowded again and The DutchBeat rocked or do we have to say jazzed!!! "OH YEAHHHH... Walkin the Dutchbeat......" BIG applause!!! What an evening again...

And we forgot to say GREAT JOB to John the soundengineer and Leon the lightengineer and to John the tourmanager, deep respect for you all!!!

Last but not least to Gino, the Man and His Music, your voice and your music made many hearts smile and brought many music-lovers in a happy state. THANKS GINO!!!
Greatness in Music!!! WONDERFUL MEMORIES FOR LIFE!!! And we as non-musicians really need music, GINO VANNELLI'S MUSIC, to relax in this crazy life. Thanks from Barend and Trees who deeply enjoyed everything! And we mean it!!!

An e-mail from Wendy & Sjaak uit Heerlen, Nederland dated Thursday 9 April 2009 with the subject: Maastricht City

Hi, good morning, We are a little late but we still say that we enjoyed Gino Vannelli's performance. Good voice and how funny the way he handled that bad sound thing, Brother to Brother was amazing and we could not recognize Wild Horses nomore... The band was great too and we had a nice evening in Maastricht. The signing thing was fun and we were so surprised to see this worldstar in between all those people. We also brought A GOOD THING with us to Heerlen. Thanks Guys!

Yes, here is the long expected e-mail review from Claude and Nadine in Versailles, France dated Thursday 9 April 2009 with the subject: Maastricht concert

Hello all!
Nadine and I attended the Maastricht concert a few weeks ago. So, you may ask, how was it? Well, the city's very nice and cozy thank you! But what about the concert? Well, here are some personal (Claude's) thoughts:

- Short concert (one hour twenty minutes, encore included), mainly due to the fact that it was the first gig of the evening at the concert hall.

- Once again, the Man has found a hot drummer: Hans Eijkenaar is funky as hell! Guitarist Erik Rutjes and Eddy Conard on percussions weren't too shabby either.

- The horn section was pretty good, but the trumpet player probably got an earful from Gino after the concert (he got an eyeful on stage) after he came in four bars early on Brother to Brother. Yipes! We could smell the early practice sessions the following days...

- Gino also broke the world record for the longest monitor throw during the concert! The Man threw offstage not one, but two broken ear monitors during the concert. Luckily for all, the third monitor worked fine.

- Gino's interpretation of Canto deserved praise, as the piano accompaniement was somewhat, how can I put it, unexpected. In fact, I'm not sure what was played was exactly what was on the sheet...

- Hurts to be in love sounds almost as tired as I just wanna stop was a few years ago. The arrangement suited perfectly the Alain Caron-led band, but the intensity isn't there anymore.

- One song was woth the price of admission by itself: People gotta move. The best version I've ever heard!!!

All in all, a pretty nice concert, not the best I've seen this year but hey! it was Gino time! Take care! Claude
