Dear Gino,
It was fabulous to see you perform in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, last night.
Though I have not seen you in decades, you’ve still got the energy, moves and thick curly hair.
Why no open shirt, that I remember so vividly?
You know that the ladies would have gone crazy.

I truly enjoyed every minute, as I think the entire audience did.
There were many folks dancing, both young and old. Is there anything better than dancing on a sugary sand beach with cool ocean breezes and fabulous music? I enjoyed hearing your old standards that brought back many memories of my youth and also your new pieces. I very much enjoy the orchestral piece you performed and would like to hear more of that. Just as you were about to perform your last song, a group of people behind me were yelling for People Gotta Move. It was so nice when you sang it for your encore.

I think you may have made many new fans from the concert. In the area I sat few knew of you, but all enjoyed your performance.

I wish you a very happy 57th birthday on Tuesday.
Ever grateful, Karen, Cozumel, MX

An e-mail dated Tuesday the 16th of June 2009 from MICHAEL AND SUANJA in Tupelo, Mississippi, USA with the subject: just returned from the Mayan Jazz Fest in Playa Del Carman.

06/16/09
Dear Barend andTrees,
Suanja and I just returned from the Mayan Jazz Fest in Playa Del Carman.
Gino was the featured artist. As always, The show was a hit!

The guys had to overcome many adverities such as head phone problems and a few other technical setbacks. All in all Ross saved the day with his magic hands and ears. Gino was a pro and gave it all he had, as usual. The portland band was cooking. We got to speak with Sandin Wilson and Alan Hinds. Alan gave me his set list. Suanja and I got to sit very close to the mixing console and wach Ross and Nick work. Ross is a gracious man. He and Gino printed 150 shirts to hand out and gave away some C D's of "A Good Thing". The album is still not released in the USA.

The weather was beautiful and I think there were around 1500-2000 people at the show.

Happy Birthday to The Man!!

We flew back with Cathy to the states and it was good to see the girls. This was their fourth show in two years and our third. We will be at the Memphis show in August. We hope you are well and we send much Love to you and all the Gino fans,
Mick and Suanja Atherton

An e-mail dated Tuesday the 16th of June 2009 from Maru in Mexico City, Mexico with the subject: Riviera Maya Jazz Festival 2009

Dear friends:
I still feel like flying!!!!
What I lived last weekend is to out of this world.
It's unbelievable that we could spend:

A DAY WITH GINO

I'm not kidding!!! The second time my dear good friend Said and I met, about 2 months ago, he said he wanted to get close to Gino, that he didn't want to go to the concert and that's all. So, he did a lot of hard work to find the way to get a letter from a radio station, to be able to be at a meet and greet, or press conference, or whatever Gino could do before or after the concert. He asked his sister, whose husband has a radio program in Radio UNAM (It's the National University of Mexico's official radio station, so the letter had to be made and signed by one of the authorized persons). It was a slow and difficult process and thanks to lots of phone calls from him and his sister Jeanette, he could finally get the letter.

So, the day before of our flight to Playa del Carmen, he was told where the press conference was going to take place in. We had to be at 9 AM on Saturday, at the luxurious and beautiful ROYAL HIDEAWAY HOTEL, for the press conference.

When we arrived there early (my husband with the video camera, Said to take the pictures, and me to ask the questions). Before we entered to the meeting room, we met Randy and were talking to him for a while and asked him if it was posible to see Gino after the concert. He didn't promise anything, but he was going to try. Said showed Randy the pictures of the Gino Vannelli Racing Team and he loved them.

We sat at first row and we recorded all what happened there. We had to sign a compromise that we wouldn't publish any of the material obtained, unless we had the artist's authorization, so I'm not sure if you can get this permission, because as soon as I have the transfer of the mini DV material to DVD, I'm planning to send you a copy, with the conference and the songs my husband could videotape. If you can publish it on your website, it would be great! We won't upload it anywhere else of course! It's for our personal joy and we want to share it with you, because Gino was so relaxed and content. The whole questions/answers session took 1 complete hour.

I asked him two questions, there were reporters from Mexico and other countries (you'll see the DVD soon) and it was so interesting. You can imagine how did Said and I feel.

We knew the sound check was going to be at 2 o'clock. So we went to Mamita's Beach Club, took an excellent place on the beach, and waited. Do you know what it is to be watching and listening Gino and his musicians soundchecking for 3 and a half hours? We could not believe it. And Said, his son, his sister, his brother in law and her girlfriend, my husband and I, didn't move from our places until the concert started.

There were some Gino fans from places close to Playa del Carmen, but from other states too and many of Mexico City. The beach slowly got crowded, and when the musicians started playing and then Gino appeared singing, the audience went wild and it was a beautiful show.

This time, I wrote the song list:

Mama Coco (Oh my God what a breathtaking version!!!)
Summers of my Life (brought me to tears, it's one of my favorite songs!!!!)
Wild Horses (this one drives my husband crazy!!!)
Living Inside Myself (What to say about this beautiful song!!!)
Just a motion away (wonderful arrangement)
A good thing (That brass section was overwhelming)
Black cars (people dancing and dancing)
Canto (BRAVO!!!)
Apaloosa (everybody went wild when he changed from the intro of Nightwalker to Apaloosa)
It hurts to be in love (beautiful!)
Brother to Brother (People singing all the time)
I just wanna stop (a loved tune!)
People gotta move (anybody was sitting by this time, all of us were dancig with each other!!!)

We went to meet Randy and he told us there was no chance to see Gino (again ha ha) for a picture (again ha ha). And he told me, "I can give you the t-shirt with the "A good thing" logo" and I almost fell down of emotion when he gave it to me! I had to keep it immediatelly, I was scared to be killed by someone who wanted it too hahaha.

We waited until Sandin, Reinhardt and Allen walked to their cars and we had the chance to say hello to them and thank them for the excellent show they gave. And a few minutes later: GINO, we thanked him again for coming to Mexico, shook hands and he signed some autographs and let people take some pictures (he's always soooo nice!!!!)

We returned to our hotel through a different path, and we found another Gino advertising, so I took a picture next to it. If you feel this is too long, you can edit it, no problem.

I'm really tired now, but I promise I'll send you the pictures my husband took, the DVD with the press conference, and the concert.

Las Vegas was perfect, but being on the beach, the long sound check, the chance to be so close in the morning and even make him 2 questions, the t-shirt and sharing with another loyal fan as me, made of this concert something very special.

Another e-mail dated Thursday the 18th of June 2009 from Maru in Mexico City, Mexico with the subject: Hotel

Hello again dear friends:
I hope you won't get bored of me with so many e-mails!
I've been re-reading your e-mails and maybe you think we stayed at the Royal Hideaway Hotel, where Gino and crew did, but no, we didn't (it is so expensive for us!!! It's a piece of paradise on earth, it's really luxurious and beautiful) and it is about 10 minutes from Mamita's Beach Club.

We stayed at a cozy and nice hotel, three blocks from Mamita's, so we could get there really fast.

This time I couldn't talk to Ross. I saw him very busy with the soundcheck and when I wanted to approach, he looked so tired (the sun was shining in a way you can't imagine, and with the humidity of the beach, it feels hotter) and he was leaving to his hotel. I think to eat, rest for a while, take a bath and get back for the concert. After the concert, when I tried to see him, he was no longer where he was.

Now I'm thinking why didn't I ask all the people I could, how did they know about the concert? It would had completed a real report of all the event.>
But I was soooooo positively overwhelmed!!!
In one part of the Press conference he said he was going to blow our minds, and he did!!! Of course he did!!!! As always.

I wanted to tell Ross, how important is his job. And I feel I'm a little bit like him. I work with my brother and my father, they're who always lead the events we prepare. And Ross' and my job is silent, behind the stage, where only a few people see us, but we are vital for the shows. And in the other side he is so polite, so calmed, and soooooooooooooo handsome.

Well, if I have something else to comment (sure I will hahaha) I'll e-mail you again... sorry!!!)
More kisses and hugs and all my love and respect.

Another e-mail with a big review dated Friday the 19th of June 2009 from Said Macari in Mexico City, MX.

"a go go" event at Playa del Carmen

Hello B & T:
I would like to share my experience at Gino's concert in Playa del Carmen.
It was so special to be at this concert with Maru. We met each other on your webpage.
I saw Maru twice in Mexico City before the concert. But it is a feeling like I know her from a long time ago. We enjoyed a lot being together at this event.

She already told you about everything we did together. I don't want to be repetitive. I would like to tell you more about Ross. Most of the time we talk about Gino and Ross is essential for him. We have to remember that "I just wanna stop" was writed by Ross. And it was nominated for a Grammy.

After the press conference, I went to mamita's beach Club, it was 1:30 and Ross was working at the console without any tent to protect him from the sun. It was very hot, almost 40 degrees celsius. Behind him was Nick Moon. I said hello to them and they very kind.

The soundcheck finished almost at 6pm. They had a lot of problems with the monitors and Randy's keyboard. But Ross worked everything out. He is an excellent ingeneer. Very meticulous. And Gino too. I was speaking with one of the event organizers near the stage and he told me that they were surprised. This was the first time, in all the years that this Festival has been done, that an artist takes so much time on the soundcheck. They couldn't believe it. Everything has to be done to perfection and ready for the concert. And so I told him: "you don't know the Vannelli brothers, they put all their heart and dedication like it was the first time"............ The organizers (Fernando Toussaint and Javier Araun) told me that there were about 7,000 people attending the concert. The area for the audience to be was about the size of a professional soccer field. And it was full. Also they said that the phones at Mamita's Beach Club didn't stop ringing from tourists asking if it was really Gino Vannelli giving a concert there. They couldn't believe it! I think that many old fans from Gino have lost track of him. They don't even know that he is still singing.

There were a lot of families with small children, dogs. Even a group from New York and another from Europe flew to Playa just to attend the concert. Everybody was on swimsuits, relaxed. It was like a 70's concert...(hippie). I was very happy for Gino and his team. Maybe they felt like the old days..when Gino was on his 20's.

I want to thank Maru, Javier, Jeanette (my sister), Said jr and Bianca (my wife) for everything they did to make this experience possible. And of course to you, Barend and Trees that keep many fans like me so in contact with Gino's projects and life.
Best wishes,
SAID MACARI

An e-mail with more memories from Maru in Mexico City dated Sunday 5 July 2009 with the subject: More details!

My dear friends:

I hope you had a great weekend and I was remembering about some other details in Playa del Carmen.

There was a Mexican woman in the soundcheck, singing and dancing next to the stage, all the time. There were two American women too, my husband had a few words with a Dutch couple. Now I regret I didn't get close, introduce myself and maybe make new friends and make publicity to your website! Fans can't imagine what they'll find! But I was like hypnotized, I didn't move from the place I was sitting, I didn't want to miss anything happening on stage.

A lot of people took cameras, and lots of them were shooting, it was impossible to stop them recording, there were thousands of people.

After the concert, Said Jr. told me: I've always listened to Gino's music because of my dad, but I never thought I was going to enjoy this concert as much as I did. It was a super big show!

There was a whole Mexican family (mom, dad, sons with their wives and daughters with their husbands) screaming "We love you Gino", "You are the best". And after the concert some of them were crying, they said to each other: Gino is part of our family, you grew up listening to Gino's music.

The day we were flying back to Mexico City, while my husband and I had breakfast, a lady told me: I saw you last Saturday at the concert, you were singing all the time, It was nice watching you enjoying in that way. She said his husband was a big Gino fan, I gave her my card in case they wanted to contact me, to share the experience, but I haven't had news from them.

Yesterday it was one of my sister's birthday and we had a party and she told me she had read about the concert in some newspapers. I'll ask her the links and if I get them, I'll send them to you of course.
God bless you and keep you in good health, happy and together.
Love.

Another e-mail with nice lines from Said in Mexico City dated August 2009 with the subject: The Gino Vannelli guestbook!

Hello B & T:
It's great to know that somebody saw the car and signed the guestbook.
Many people asked me, at the track, why do I advertise Gino. They are people who know him. And they have copied the web page address.

The same happened at Playa del Carmen with Maru, she gave the address to many fans around us. I think that many people in Mexico know your site. Not everybody writes, nor speek english. But you have to be sure that your web page is appreciated back here.
We will try to contact Karla. I already spoke with Maru and she is really happy that our promotion of the web page is going on.
Best wishes
SAID MACARI

Another e-mail from Maru in Mexico City dated August 2009 with the subject: Mexican fan

My dear friends:
I was so excited to read about the other mexican fan who wrote in your guestbook!
I've tried to contact her, but have no answer yet.

I've been digging in your website and I ask you to be so kind to let us know if there's a chance to watch the interview next September, the more we have of Gino the more we want, we never get enough!
Said told me about ARG story (at your "short stories" section), I read it and love it! It's so nice to know we'll have "new" old pictures soon.

I'm happy because Said invited us to his restaurant again, if your ears are bipping next Saturday, you know who's talking (nicely) about you hahaha. We had been trying to meet since we arrived from Playa del Carmen, but sometimes things are not in the way we want. Not tired to tell you HOW MUCH I LOVE YOUR WEBSITE!
Hugs and kisses from Mexico City.

Hello Barend & Trees,
Besides my passion for music I enjoy racing cars (amateur hobby).
Last Sunday I decided to create the Gino Vannelli Racing Team for one day.
I went with my son and we wore the Holland Team jackets in your honor.

We are very excited Gino's coming to Mexico and it is a way of welcoming him and his people.

I am going to be at Playa del Carmen for his concert.
Hope you enjoy the pictures as much as I enjoyed my two passions merged together.

(5): An e-mail dated 15 May 2009 from Said Macari in Mexico City, Mexico with the subject: Riviera Maya Jazz Festival...

Dear Berend & Trees,
Aaaaaaaaaaaachuu!!! jajaja (just kidding)
To be honest, we haven't heard from anyone close (family, friends, customers) that has got the swine flu. There is a lot of expeculation with the elections we're having in July. There are even rumors that the federal government has manipulate the news to attract attention away from other parties. Our president ended up like a "hero that saved the planet". Hope you can share this with people that work with Gino.

I have not forget to send you the tickets I promised. And I will include a tshirt from 1991 tour. What's not included is the virus.

We hope Gino comes. The important thing is that they feel safe.
Best wishes, SAID

(4): A pre-fun e-mail number 3 dated 14 May 2009 from Maru in Mexico City, Mexico with the subject: Riviera Maya Jazz Festival

Hello dear friends:
I wish you are both OK. I'm so excited preparing everything for our trip to Playa del Carmen.
We want to book flight, hotel, car rental, etc. etc.
Said told me there's publicity of Gino's performance next month.

We're planning to go together, we phone each other frequently and we behave like kids, we were not feeling sure of going to the Jazz Festival, because the entrance is free and we wanted to have a very nice place, and with no ticket sale, it will be difficult. But after we talked and thought we decided we cannot miss Gino!!!

We are about to buy the plane tickets and make the hotel reservations. Please, if you know about any rumour about cancelling, I beg you to let us know, because maybe in other times, it wouldn't be so much a trouble. But now, with the economic situation, we don't want to spend unnecessarilly. I know we may have a wonderful weekend, but what we really want is GINO!!!

I'm sorry to bother you with this, but I hope you understand what we are going through now. Our contry was in a difficult economic situation, but after this flu thing, it has become worse. But we believe in our hearts that this is an opportunity we must take.
I'm attaching the image of the magazine I told you.
Thank you very much for the latest pictures and I wish you health, love and Gino's music!!!
A big kiss and hug.
Maru.

(3): An e-mail from Liliana H-V dated 12 May 2009 from Mexico city in Mexico with the subject: Greetings from Mexico!!

Dear Barend & Trees,
There's been years I've followed your deep admiration and wonderful work towards The Master of Music GINO VANNELLI. It's hard to put into words the gratefulness you inspire me, because you have been such loyal and careful fans throughout the years.

I heard Gino's music 34 years ago for the first time, and since then he's been my very favorite. There's no one quite like him in the whole musical world: then and now, his talent trascends time.

You can imagine muy joy now that I find he's coming to Mexico next June!! Gino has been to Mexico only once, back in 1991, and he gave only two concerts.

The only bad thing with this new announcement is that .... he will be in Playa del Carmen, not in Mexico City!! That's strange, since Playa del Carmen is a place full of tourists, and I believe the most of Gino's fans are in Mexico City, where there are a lot of venues in which he could perform.

I dare to say you are very near Gino, in touch with him and his musical team. Do you happen to know if Gino will give a concert in Mexico City?? Or will he just perform in Playa del Carmen, and leave us the rest of his mexican fans "out in the rain, waiting"??

Thanks in advance for your answer. And please, keep up your wonderful work dedicated to The Master of Music.
Cheerfully yours,
Liliana

WWWWWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!

I'm happy happy happy!!!!!!
When I wrote to you this morning, my husband had gone to play tennis.
When he arrived I told him about next June's Gino's performance and guess what he answered: Check the plane rates, hotel, buy the tickets for the concert and make the reservations.
Of course I hugged and kissed him repeatedly.

He told me we can miss the chance to see him again!!!! So you can imagine what I'm feeling in my heart from that moment. Oh God, I confirm I'm a blessed woman, don't you think so? THANK YOU DEEP FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART for the update!!!!
My two sweet angels on earth, lots of love from your happy friend in Mexico City.
Maru.

(1): A pre-fun e-mail number 1 dated 16 March 2009 from Maru in Mexico City, Mexico with the subject: GINO IN MEXICO!!!!!!!

WWWWWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!

As everyday, I checked your website and OH MY GOD!!!!!!
I couldn't believe what I was reading, my heart started beating sooooooooo fast!!!
Finally, he's visiting Mexico (so stupid of me, I thought Mexico City) I keep my fingers crossed for a Mexico City Concert.

I'll see what I'll have to do to go to that Jazz Festival in Quintana Roo.
Playa del Carmen is a real paradise, soft sand, calm waters in a beautiful blue color and let me tell you that by June, the sun will be shining as strong as it can, the weather will be really really HOT! We have been there just once. It's about 3 hours by plane from Mexico City and as it is a foreign touristic point mainly, the prizes are high, handled in USD.

Someone making the trip from Mexico City to the Riviera Maya (plane, hotel and meals) may spend the same ammount that traveling to LAS VEGAS or L.A. or ORLANDO (in the past we made comparisons and that's why we've been there only once, we preferred to take our kids to Disneyland and Disney World). I don't know what I'll have to do to go and see Gino.

Maybe we'll have to work harder and save every peso, but I want to be there next June 13, and maybe give Gino a birthday wish (and a hug and a kiss! hahaha), personally. Wouldn't it be great?

We're planning to meet Said and his wife Bianca this afternoon (it's a holiday in my country) and I'm sure he'll be very happy too!

The more I visit your website, the more I love it! There are no words enough to THANK YOU for all the happiness you give to me. A very big hug to you both and THANK YOU FOR THE GOOD NEWS!!!!!

I'm sure that we are blessed because our problems are smaller than our happiness, that we have a strong heart to fight, we have health, a husband or wife to love and who loves us, a job, our contries are not in war, we have freedom and we have Gino's music to cheer up our spirits!!!! So let's live our life as long as we have it, enjoying of every minute! I'm happy for this concert and my next project is visiting the mexican caribbean this summer!!!!
A big kiss for each one.
Maru.

GINO VANNELLI in the media:

Gino Vanelli Lunes 01 de junio de 2009 num. 48 Erik Montenegro

Siguieron Inconsolable Man, Live in Montreal, Yonder Tree, Slow Love, Canto (donde Vanelli explora otros estilos cantando en italiano, francés y español) y por último These are the days.

¿Tienes algunos instrumentos favoritos?

GINO VANNELLI, Montreal’s Favorite Son

Nowadays, Gino Vannelli is promoting his most recent material called “A Good Thing”, retaking the original and creative ideas, through his tendency to arts and particularly to impressionism. Besides these good news and thinking on the Riviera Maya International Jazz Festival, we could interview Gino before his arrival to Mexico to give a Concert next June 13 at Mamita’s Beach Club at the incomparable and paradisiacal Playa del Carmen in a unique free show. So you can miss it.

GINO VANNELLI Montreal’s Favorite Son is in Mexico

I want to paraphrase Eddy Martinez, who did a wonderful short review of Gino Vannelli’s career, in our last October 2008 magazine, in the section “Fade Out”:

“Gino Vannelli was born in Montreal, Canada, on June 16, 1952. His father sang with a Big Band, this situation made Gino love music, specially Jazz. His admiration for this genre drummers like Joe Morello, Elvin Jones and Gene Krupa drove him to study drums and music theory for five years. At the age of 12, he put together the rock band “Jacksonville 5” with his brother Joe on keyboards. We have to mention that this musical group, who based their sound on Motown seal’s bands, started five years before the famous Jackson Five appear. By that time Vannelli studied guitar and piano and he started singing.

When he was 17, he signed a contract wit RCA Canada, under the name Van Elli, releasing a pair of singles. With the characteristic enthusiasm of that age, brothers Gino and Joe flew to America, first to New York and then to L. A. They auditioned and left several executives very well impressed but no contract to sign.

Then they decide to fly back to Montreal, but young Gino wanted to take a last chance to get a record company before returning home. So next morning Vannelli went to A&M headquarters, waiting for one of the owners, legendary Herb Alpert. And when Mr. Alpert arrived, Gino ran after him and when Gino could finally reach him, he asked him for an audition. Herb Alpert had a presentiment and gave Gino the chance to sing some of his songs with his guitar. That was the beginning of his career as an A&M artist.

With six albums from 1974 to 1978, with lots of hits listed on top ten. His style was a mix of Jazz & Pop, emphasizing the use of keyboards by Joe, who recorded repeatedly note by note, to make the beautiful harmonies with the sounds he designed by himself, there were no polyphonic synths by that time.

Chronologically, the records were Crazy Life, Powerful People, Storm at Sunup, Gist of the Gemini, A Pauper in Paradise and the famous Brother to Brother.

Most of the songs included in these albums, are very elaborated pieces, requiring a very high quality of performance, that’s why great musicians like Mark Craney, Jimmy Haslip, Carlos Rios, Ernie Watts, Victor Feldman, Jay Graydon and Graham Lear, have been involved in his projects.

On 1978 Herb Alpert & Jerry Moss sold A&M and the new directors wanted Gino to record disco music. Gino didn’t want that, so on 1980 he signed contract with Arista, releasing the album Nightwalker with the cut Living Inside Myself, getting in number six on top ten. But when Vannelli presented the Record Company’s executives “Twisted Heart”, they didn’t accept it and then Gino was “frozen” for four years. On 1985 Gino Vannelli had no more contract with Arista and he immediately released Black Cars with HME. Two years later he recorded Big Dreamers Never Sleep, with the # 1 single Wild Horses, even in Europe.

Then came Inconsolable Man, Live in Montreal, Yonder Tree, Slow Love, Canto (where Vannelli explores different styles singing in Italian, French and Spanish) and the most recent one These are the Days.”

This is the first part of the Festival 2009, beginning earlier with the extraordinary show of a Super Star Mr. Vannelli. On November we’ll have as guests, famous musicians like Herbie Hancock, Sergio Mendes, Al Jarreau, Pat Martino, Jim Beard, Spyro Gyra and Mexican talents too: Enrique Nery, N’arimbo, Mark Aanderud, Juan Alzate, Aguamala, Sacbé, Colin Hunter and The Royal Band. We’ll report of these events as they happen, at music:life magazine. In the meantime this is what Montreal’s favorite son said:

- Growing in Montreal bust be an important incentive to decide taking one of the fine arts as a job, because of the cultural explosion of that city.
Well, unfortunately it hasn’t been always like that. When I was a child, Montreal was not what it is today. It was not a cultural or musical place. Maybe in the 60’s there were some jazz clubs that brought Big Bands, so it was easy to see orchestras like Stan Kenton’s, Duke Ellington’s or Count Basie’s. Later in the 70’s – 80’s there was not so much activity. I think all started by the end of the 80’s with the beginning of the Montreal Jazz Festival.

- Let’s get back in time. Why don’t you tell us about that musical group called “The Cobras” A rude name for a 12 years old boys band isn’t it?
Oh it was a long time ago… Yes I was 12, let me think, I was in sixth grade.

-What instrument did you play?
I was the drummer.

-How is it possible to know that someone comes to this world to be a musician?
Having parents who love music helps a lot. If they’re musicians, much better. If they’re not music lovers, at least it’s very important that they support their kids in their musical interest. In my case, my parents made me have my first drums, piano and guitar lessons, as much as many other things. When I was ready, I felt I had several skills and that makes the way easy, when you know what you were born to become in. Music is with no doubt, the answer to develop this talents.

-Why did you prefer keyboards instead of drums?
I’ve always loved drums. I loved what Buddy Rich and Gene Kruppa did, the most important drummers in the 30’s and 40’s. They were so good, that they became in the leaders of the Big Bands they performed with. I love drums sound, when I was 8 or 9 years old, I took lessons; my dad bought me a small drum set and I practiced very hard. I grew up with the idea of being a drummer. I was the drummer in my first album. I was 19 or 20 years old. Later I realized I had not enough time to become in a great drummer, and write songs and sing them, everything at the same time, so I decided to find harmonies, helped by the piano for the music, poetry and lyrics.

-How is it easier for you to express your emotions, with some instrument, composing or singing?
I think everything has its own place. When I’m composing I do it with the piano, sometimes with my guitar, but I take ideas in my head, then to look for harmonies I go to the piano. When I think the song is complete, I start with the singing, sometimes I have to change elements from the composition to make them fit to the singing technique, later it comes the production process, where I finish what I want to express. It’s like an engine, where al the elements are important.

-As a composer What do you think it’s more valuable in your songs, to make them magnificent or real?
(Gino smiles) Well I think nothing or nobody can be magnificent if it’s not honest or true. I think they come together. The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, George Gershwin, they were who they were because they took magnificence next to the true, at the same time.

-Talking about George Gershwin, once he said: Life’s much like jazz, it gets better when you improvise What does improvisation mean to you?
We never know what will happen. There are things we can predict, but there are others we can not. I decided to move to Europe for a year or two with the idea of creating more unpredictible things in my life and you realize that unpredictible things generate more unpredictible things. It’s like to want to put to rights the chaos, and the only way to do it is creating. Creating can solve the unpredictible and put in order the chaos. That’s why to create is so important.

-I was checking about that old good story when you ran after Herb Alpert to sing your songs for him. What did you have in mind in that moment?
(Gino smiles) Oh I had absolutely nothing in mind beyond becoming a big big star, as simple as that.

-How do you see actual recording industry in comparison to the 70’s?
That’s a good question because with this new album (actually distributed in part of Europe and Mexico too) I decided to get back to the old style, I mean I started playing the songs on stage first, before any recording and this helps a lot. Nowadays we have Protools and other computer’s help to edit, but this time I talked to the pianist, the drummer and the bassist to record every part on separate tracks and for the mixing and mastering, I listened to many of my favorite old records, with their peculiar sound and what I wanted was to make ours, sound much better than any of the old ones. We tried a little retro, but the best part of making things retro.

-Do you think music has the power to change people’s minds?
Definitely yes, you can use music from meditation to move people to go to war, people cry with the music, or dance or smile, you can sleep or make a baby sleep with music… and you can wake up a baby with music (laughs)

-What’s the music that makes you cry?
It’s a good question… I think (Gino takes his time)… some Debussy’s fragments, some strings’ and piano’s excerpts, very specific things. You know what? Some Beatles’ songs.

-Really?
Yes sure, well not for the lyrics, it’s because of the memories that bring back a wonderful past, innocence age, if I listen to “Yesterday” for example, and that kind of songs, I remember special moments of my life… that harmless world where I lived in those days, I mean, we all know that 70’s were complicated but in the other hand, they brought all the emotional wonder, like having a family, being 12 years old when those songs were sung and what they gave me was pure emotion.

-You like classical music don’t you?
My musical education was partly classic. It’s part of my life.

-I was thinking about that CD “Canto”
It’s a very emotional album, it’s like a gate to free all the feelings that you want to express.

-If you had to choose one song of all your discography, that became in some kind of hymn, representing what Gino Vannelli wants to leave to this world, which one would it be?
(He laughs) I don’t think I could select just one song. Not because I think they are all excellent, but we are talking about periods, songs from different times. During the 70’s a lot of songs that came to my life were very successful and representative, by the 80’s I think about “Persona non grata” as a great song, by 90’s I think of the album “Yonder Tree” and the song “Walter Whitman where are you” one of my favorite songs I’ve written, and of course in this century songs like “Dea Speranza” and “Canto”. Now this new material (he reflects) hey you’re hard! (He laughs) I think it should be “A Good Thing”, I like its impressionist style.

-How did you get to record the track “The Sad Night” with Manuel Mijares?
Manuel called me and told me he’d like to record a song with me, so I asked him who was he. He sent me some mp3, I liked the songs, I let him know and then he said: Perfect, I’ll be there tonight (he laughs) We had a lot of fun during the recording.

-You sang in Spanish
Gino Vannelli in Mexico the 13th of June 2009. Yes, I’d done it before at “Canto” Album, I sang a song… “Mala Luna”, as well as “Tierras de Amores y Sombras” with Alejandro Lerner’s help.

-Do you have some favorite instruments?
Yes I have 2 acoustic guitars, I have a G7 in the studio and I like it so much, and a complete Oak drum set from Yamaha.

-To finish, do you think there’s a song that you wrote, and deserves to be rediscovered or one that didn’t have the right attention when it was released?
I think there are several. One of my favorites is “You owe it to yourself” and it was not a big hit. But it’s a simple song, the one I’m always humming while a travel in train.

Playa del Carmen sang Gino Vannelli’s songs

[15/06/2009 - 13:46]

Happy coincidence: the first concert of the seventh edition of Riviera Maya Jazz Festival, planned for June 13, coincided with the strong campaign of promotion that state and federal instances are carrying out to recover the tourism that moved away from the country on account of the outbreak of influenza.

Last weekend, the Trust of Tourist Promotion of the Riviera Maya (FPTRM) presented its guest of luxury: the Canadian musician Gino Vannelli, who in a session of questions and answers, that was prolonged for almost an hour, filled of anecdotes, reflections and in a good mood the stage Havana of the hotel Royal Hideway.

To the question of how sees the situation in Mexico after the influenza, and what would tell him the people of the world on our country, Gino Vannelli, responded with an “achu” that started the laughters of the audience. The pretended sneeze of the jazz musician doesn’t need of greater introductions, all was said.

Gino Vannelli, who had promised a single thing for the concert of Saturday night: “To fly our head”, surpassed for a lot of the expectations calling at more than 7 thousand people; tourists and local that met to listen to one of the classics of the jazz.

Gino Vannelli is an alchemist of rhythms, and possessor of one of the most distinctive voices of the music of the contemporary pop music, one of its keys to continue in force, is, according to its own words, not to have renounced the change and the renewal of its songs, of its rhythm and of its music, in spite of the fact that the agencies and managers indicated him the contrary road, that is to say, to continue touching the Just as it had engraved it; “but my decision was to continue what my heart dictated me”, indicated Mr. Vannelli.

Powerful people

Gino Vannelli, who was called by the Vatican to play in front of Pope Juan Pablo II in a Christmas, and of where its disk “Canto 2003″; also was given time for speak of politics, and of the “Powerful people” (title of one of its disks).

Without pretensions, Mr. Vannelli laughs when they ask him what thinks of the powerful people, and responds: “I have been in many places of the world, in some places functions, in some other not so much, there are many forms to do things; and the philosophy, the religion, the politics, we try it to see as we live our own lives; and my life has been of work and of fight. All is reduced to what one feels or does”.

For Vannelli, the world simply is thus is, “has bad and good things, and can be taken as be wanted”. But as the artist that is, its only purpose “is to create beauty, the music should be beautiful”, says Vannelli; and it requires of a personal search, “each album is a testimony of that search”, adds.

On Saturday passed, Gino Vanelli opened the curtain of an advanced one 7th edition of Riviera Maya Jazz Festival; is the first time that the artist visits the Mexican Caribbean, and the beauty of its sea and its people will cause they will return it, expressed.

The 7th edition of Riviera Maya Jazz Festival left besides a good flavor of mouth thousands of visitors, what was noted with the full airplanes that arrived to Cancun and in the increment of the hotel occupation, said Javier Aranda, director of the Trust of Tourist Promotion, who considered that this concert was a great moment to show that the Riviera Mayan is a destiny that has the best offering, and the capacity To call the better international artists.

The harmonious they began to sound at 8 o’clock at night on Saturday with the local group Aguamala, and at 9 o’clock at night rose Gino Vannelli to the setting, delighting at thousands o’clock of people that arrived at Beach Mamita’ s to enjoy a concert of height, completely free.
