A Saterday evening on the 14th of July 2007 with a great contrast to human emotions... The biggest disappointment ever for people who could not come inside the concert-hall anymore and the happiest moment ever in the lives of other people who were inside during this great performance of 4 super Musicians. Only a thin door with big security guards divided two kind of emotions but at both sides was a flood of tears.

Het was een fantastische gig, weer echt genieten weer van alle nieuwe nummer waar bij mij toch echt "don't give up on me" bovenaan staat prachtig nummer ! Maar ook alle andere songs als : Gipsy days, Black Cars, People gotta move, I just wanna Stop ( was prachtig) , I't hurts tot be in love, Rosebud is dead, Brother to Brother, A Good thing, en volgens mij ben ik nog iets vergeten. Maar het was geweldig.!!!!
Erik kooger met z'n soepele polsjes , tjonge wat kan die man drummen, prachtig om te zien, Boudewijn Lucas op zijn bas ook super, Michiel op zijn 2 Nord Keyboards ook magnifiek. en Gino was volgens mij helemaal in zijn element en zong de sterren van de hemel. Hi Barend and Trees, Thank God, we already found our seat in time on the first row, we looked around and realized that we were so very lucky. In front of us, hanging against the stage, an amount of ladies re-lived old times and screamed like crazy when Gino came towards their direction there was even a flood of real tears.
Erik Kooger with his smooth wrists, Geeeeezzzz this man can drum, So cool to see and also Boudewijn Lucas on his bass was great, Michiel on his 2 Nord keyboards, really splendid. And Gino was totally happy and into His music, He did sing superb and we were in music heaven. Barend and Trees, (3): Nederlands/Dutch: North Sea Jazz Festival: veel te veel publiek 16 Juli 2007 | Door: Zomergast Op het North Sea Jazz Festival was ik twee dagen, vrijdag en zaterdag. Rotterdam was vorig jaar een soort verademing na de drukte in Den Haag maar dit jaar sloeg het ook hier weer alles. Vooral de zaterdag was stervensdruk. Je kon in bijna geen enkele zaal wegens opstoppingen en tjokvolheid. Gino Vannelli was bijvoobeeld niet in te komen als je er niet een paar uur van tevoren alvast ging zitten... Volgend jaar ga ik denk ik naar de radio luisteren, het is te duur voor alleen maar rondlopen op de eet-, en drinkpleinen waar alles ook nog heel erg duur is. een teleurgestelde jazzfanaat

(5):A reaction from Tom and Kerry in London, England My Dear Barend & Trees, How wonderful to see you both again on Saturday evening. Gino, Michiel and the band were fantastic and it was probably one of the best performances I've ever seen Gino perform. As you know the concert room was very full. Despite arriving very early for the performance, Kerry and I had to battle for seats in the second row!! But it was worth it... I trust you all got home safely and that Gino enjoyed his second visit to the festival. We had a fantastic time and despite the crazy weather it remained sunny and warm in the evenings which was great. Arrived back home a few hours ago, still buzzing with the joy of the NSJF'07 and already making plans for next year. I'm sure you already have lots of pictures but I've sent you a few of mine to see in the meantime...... Please let me know when Gino is performing next in Europe and keep up all the hard work on the web-site, its very much appreciated. Please give Gino our very best wishes and thanks. Kindest regards to you both Tom & Kerry from London. London. Picture number: 2 and 3 and 4 (6): Nederlands/Dutch: Gisteravond wederom naar Rotterdam AHOY geweest. De tweede avond North Sea Jazz. En het was weer een succes. Wat drukker dan vrijdag maar daar stond tegenover dat we meer gegeten hebben. Eerst de muziek: na binnenkomst togen we naar de Nile alwaar Steely Dan (enig idee wat dat eigenlijk is een Steely Dan? Dames?) optrad. Het zijn twee rare figuren die Walter Becker en Donald Fagen, maar muziek maken kunnen ze wel. Becker stond er zeer ongeinteresseerd bij maar zijn dialogen waren zeer vermakelijk en zijn spel erg goed. Fagen lijkt motorisch niet helemaal 100% maar met zijn stem is in ieder geval niks mis. Daarna naar Raul Midón in de Maas. Dat klinkt natter dan het is als je weet dat de zalen in AHOY voor deze gelegenheid allemaal de naam van een rivier hebben gekregen. Muziekvriend Marcelo tipte deze zanger. Hij had enthousiaste verhalen gehoord. Een goed zanger, dat is zeker waar, maar het kon ons niet echt boeien. Het derde concert wat we hebben mogen aanschouwen was Gino Vanelli met Michiel Borstlap en zijn band. Borstlap is een Nederlandse jazzpianist, Vanelli kent iedereen van mijn leeftijd en ouder. De jongere zullen hem misschien kennen van "You Gota Move", een stukje uit zijn song People Gotta Move. Je weet wel, van de ANWB reclame. Een misschien niet erg voor de hand liggende samenwerking. Maar het was een voortreffelijk optreden. Dan het belangrijkste: het eten. Maurice, Zondag 15 Juli 2007.
(6): English/Engels: First the music: When we came in Ahoy we went to the Nile Hall where Steely Dan performed.(Any idea what a Steely Dan is??? Ladies???) It are 2 weird persons that Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, but they can play music for sure. Becker seems to be very un-interested but his small-talks were very funny and the way he played was very good. Fagen's locomotion did not look very well, no 100% but his voice was pretty good.
After this we went to the Maas-hall to Raul Midón, this sounds wet (The Maas is a big river in Holland which devides Rotterdam in two parts) but they gave all the concert-halls names of rivers. My musicfriend Marcelo gave us the tip about Raul Midón. He heard very enthusiastic stories about him. A good singer but he did not impress us and he did not get our attention.
The third concert and we were lucky, very lucky to be there, was Gino Vannelli and Michiel Borstlap and Band. Borstlap is a Dutch Jazz piano-player, everybody of my age and older knows Gino Vannelli. The young people probably know Him from "You Gotta Move"
a part from His song "People Gotta Move". From the ANWB commercials, you know! A maybe not predictable collaboration but this was a great and awesome performance! (7): Nederlands/Dutch: te laat bij Gino Vannelli. Tenminste we waren er te vroeg, maar hij was in een dermate kleine zaal geprogrammeerd dat die al ver van te voren uitpuilde van de mensen. Bummer! Concert van Gino was weer helemaal TOP!!! Ik was met een vriendin en haar man. Carlos was niet mee. Oh als hij het geweten had......Mijn vrienden vonden het ook weer fantastisch! We hadden echt mazzel, toen we binnen kwamen zat de zaal bijna helemaal vol. Maar links aan de zijkant op de 2e rij waren nog 3 stoeltjes vrij. Helaas kon ik van Michiel maar één handje zien. Gino kon ik gelukkig prima zien. De zaal liep helemaal vol en was echt te klein. Toen besefte ik pas dat we eigenlijk best goed zaten. Ik zag Werner uit Duitsland wel op de eerste rij in het midden staan. Jullie zag ik later backstage staan, aan de zijkant. Maar ik had nog meer mazzel, in ons rijtje ging er steeds iemand weg. (lijkt me trouwens héél irritant als mensen steeds weglopen maar ieder heeft zo zijn eigen favoriet en aangezien de concerten elkaar overlappen krijg je dat.)Voor mij alleen maar mooi, ik kon steeds een stukje verder opschuiven, en had dan ook halverwege een riant uitzicht!!! Ook Michiel kon ik nu weer zien, is ook wel een prettig uitzicht toch? Haha... Ik zat alleen wel een beetje aan de tamme kant van de zaal. Nou ik heb me lekker in mezelf gekeerd en genoten...... Was echt heerlijk. Ons kikkerlandje heeft toch ook wel geweldige muzikanten! Want voor Gino, "only the best" voor minder doet hij het niet... Ik hoorde ook voor het eerst het nummer "Rosebud" (ik weet niet of dit nou ook de exacte titel was) ook weer geweldig. Doet die Man ook wel eens iets wat niet goed is??? Ik zou het niet weten...... Ik heb natuurlijk wel mijn favorieten. "Don't Give Up On Me" is van de nieuwe nummers toch wel mijn favoriet. Als toegift "I Just Wanna Stop" konden we lekker meezingen. Nou ja, ik hoorde toch wel erg mezelf zingen..... aan mij kantje van de zaal. Nou jammer dan hoor!!!
Wat heeft Gino toch een bescheiden uitstraling voor iemand die zo GROOTS is... Dit maakt hem zo bijzonder..... Nou ja hoef ik jullie niet te vertellen natuurlijk..... haha. Later stonden we nog even bij een kraampje toen er twee dames op me af kwamen: WAAAAAR IS IE????? HOE KOM JE AAN DIE POSTERS????? "Uh.... het concert is al geweest en het signeren van cd's en posters ook"..... BUMMER!!! Oh wat voel je je dan rijk..... Verkopen???? NO WAY!!!! NEVER!!! Helaas zijn er geen foto's gemaakt omdat de fotograaf, (Carlos) verstek heeft laten gaan. Aangezien ik niks wil missen maak ik geen foto's. Ik heb mijn herinneringen die me dierbaar zijn. En jullie en/of de ander fans hebben vast weer mooi plaatjes geschoten die binnenkort op jullie site te zien zullen zijn. Nou, dat was mijn beleving, vers na het concert van Gino op North Sea Jazz 2007. Op naar het volgende concert....... Welterusten en tot hoors. Groetjes, Donja
It was a big pity that I only could see one hand of Michiel but thank God I could see Gino very well. The concert-hall got very full and it was really too small and it was at that moment I realized that we were lucky with these good seats. I saw Werner standing in the middle of the first row and later on I saw you two standing backstage at the side. I got luckier by the minute because some people in our row left. By the way, it seems to me that it is so very annoying for an artist that people keep on leaving the hall but everybody has his or hers own favorite and when different concerts overlap, this happens. For me this was pretty good because I could move up seat by seat and in the middle of the concert I had the most beautiful view!!! I could even see Michiel and that's a good view too? Isn't it??? Hahahaha....... I only had a seat in the more quiet side of the concert-hall, the tame-spirited side so I lived in myself and deeply enjoyed it. It was really fantastic! Our little small flat green country has such good musicians! Because for Gino Vannelli only the BEST and nothing less!!! For the very time I heard "Rosebud" (I do not know the exact title) but this new song was great again. Does He ever do or create something which is not good? I really do not know... And for sure I have my favorites. However "Don't Give Up On Me" is the most favorite of all the new songs for me. And with the encore "I Just Wanna Stop" we all could sing along very nicely. I really heard my own voice very clear at this lame side of the concert-hall. Who cares? I loved it!!!
I was in line to buy a poster and Barend said: "When you are not in time we have a few too". Very nice of you Barend but I was in time and very lucky, including an exclusive hand and THE wink from GINO!!!! What does a human being need more... ??? A signed poster for Carlos too. SURPRISE!!! Gino has such a humble charisma for a person who is such a greatness... This makes Him so very special.... Oh well no need to tell you two this ofcourse... Hahahaha. Later that evening we were looking at a stand and two ladies came runing towards me: WHHHHHHERE IS HE??? AND HOW DID YOU GET THESE POSTERS??? "Huh?..... The concert already happened and the signing of cd's and posters too....???" BUMMER!!! Ohhh geezzz I felt so rich... Sell???? NO WAY!!!! NEVER!!!! The big pity is that I have no pictures because the photographer (Carlos) failed to turn up. And I do not want to miss nothing so I do not make pictures myself. I have my cherished memories printed in my brains. And most of the time you two or other fans made wonderful pictures and for sure you will post them on your web site so we will enjoy everything soon. So this was my world of experience, fresh after the Gino Vannelli concert at the North Sea Jazz 2007. To the next concert..... Good night, sleep well en you will hear from me again. Greetings, Donja. Hi Barend and Trees, We expected to see you and Gino after the show on the meet and greet but then we found out that someone sent us to the wrong record companies desk when it was too late. We enjoyed Steely Dan (phantastic) and Curtis Stigers (phantastic) and Gino (super-phantastic) Now we looking forward for Bilzen - will you be there? Houd het zuiver svp., deze horen op andere festivals thuis! Ik denk dat het succes meer en meer afgemeten word in Euro's winst dan in Muziek en tevredenheid van de Jazz fan's / bezoekers....... (2): The MEDIA in general from Sunday 15 up to Wednesday 18 July 2007: THE BIGGEST MISTAKE EVER MADE BY THE ORGANISATION OF THE NORTH SEA JAZZ FESTIVAL: a Gino Vannelli concert in a too small concert-hall!!! 400-600 hundred people still outside... Everybody talked and wrote about this. TV Rijnmond Rotterdam and all the major newspapers of Holland like The Telegraaf, Het Algemeen Dagblad and the Volkskrant. The DJ's of radio 538 said that they were at the North Sea Jazz Festival last Saterday the 14th of July and they could not get inside at GINO VANNELLI's concert this was such a major BIG disappointment for them so they had to say this on the radio 538... Gino Vannelli's name is mentioned so many times in the media because they want the North Sea Jazz Festival organization to hear and read this so mistakes as this one can be locked out in the future. The people who were inside showed their musical satisfaction in a big way and had that "after a Gino Vannelli live concert" smiling and glorious face! Kruidenmix smaakt naar meer De 32ste editie van het North Sea Jazz festival vond dit keer voor de tweede keer plaats in de nieuwe thuishaven Rotterdam. Met de komst van het cruiseschip de Rotterdam, omgetoverd tot een ware jazzcruiser en gevuld met ruim duizend jazzfanatici en diverse artiesten van wereldfaam, begon de stad al te bruisen voor aanvang van het festival. De evenementenhal Ahoy, eigenlijk niet meer dan een betonnen kolos, vormt de vaste grond van North Sea Jazz. Het is de verdienste van de organisatie dat men in staat is deze enorme ruimte gedurende drie avonden en nachten om te toveren tot een sfeervolle en broeierige muziektempel. De eerder vermelde kruidenmix bestond dit jaar uit enkele grote namen uit onder meer de hiphop (Snoop Dogg, The Roots), soul (India.Arie), funk (Sly & The Family Stone), blues (Keb'Mo) en 'kwaliteitspop' (Steely Dan, Elvis Costello & Allen Toussaint Band, Gino Vannelli), aangevuld met een hele reeks minder bekende 'niet onder jazz te rangschikken' artiesten. Uw 8WEEKLY-verslaggever van dit weekend opereerde alleen op een festival met ruim honderdvijftig optredens. Er moest dus een keuze worden gemaakt in het brede programma. Met een gezonde voorliefde voor niet-westerse muziek (ook wel 'wereldmuziek') en het singer-songwriter genre was er van te voren een zorgvuldige route uitgestippeld.

A mix of spices tastes morish The 32nd edition of the North Sea Jazz festival happened this time for the second time in hometown Rotterdam. With the arrival of the North Sea Jazz cruiseship called the Rotterdam, which is a magical and true jazzcruiser filled with a thousand jazz fanatics and different miscellaneous jazz worldstars, the city already swinged even before the start of the festival. The events center Ahoy, really nothing more than a concrete colossus, is the fixed set up of the North Sea Jazz. It's a big reward for the organization because they were able to change and set the tone in this very large space into a jazzy and pleasant sultry music bandstand.
The already mentioned mix of spices consisted of BIG names this year from the hiphop (Snoop Dogg, The Roots), soul (India.Arie), funk (Sly & The Family Stone), blues (Keb'Mo) and 'qualitypop' (Steely Dan, Elvis Costello & the Allen Toussaint Band, Your 8WEEKLY-reporter of this weekend worked alone on this festival with more than 150 performances. So I had to make choices in this broad outlined program. With a healthy love for non-western music ('also called worldmusic') and the singer-songwriter style of music I traced out a carefully chosen route.

Zaterdag, altijd de drukste dag, is ook de dag van de opstoppingen. Zo bleek het buitenpodium waar Boris zong nauwelijks bereikbaar, en leek iedere festivalganger iets van Gino Vannelli met Michiel Borstlap te willen zien, die beter naar de Nile hadden kunnen worden verplaatst, want daar stond Larry Carlton voor een nog niet voor een derde gevulde zaal.

This was a fantastic gig, a real enjoyment to listen to the new songs and for me without doubts "Don't Give Up On Me" is TOP on the list, what a beautiful tune ! But also all the other songs like "Gipsy Days" "Black Cars" "People Gotta Move" I Just Wanna Stop"
En toen was de koek op......Maar er werd nog gesigneerd maar waar.... niet goed verstaan natuurlijk! Maar zoals een goed fan betaamd en met behulp van mijn lieve vrienden (die weten hoe belangrijk het voor mij is) toch het stekkie gevonden. Gelukkig jullie ook nog kunnen groeten. Een concert van Gino zonder Barend en Trees gezien te hebben, dat kan natuurlijk niet......
Ik stond in de rij voor een poster. Barend zei: " Als je het niet op tijd lukt hebben wij ze ook nog wel hoor." Heel attent van je Barend maar het is gelukt, inclusief handje en knipoog van Gino!!! Wat wil een mens nog meer....
Ook eentje voor Carlos. SURPRISE!!!

And then the end was there... But there was still a signing session... Where??? Of course I could not hear where exactly!? But like a good real fan and with the help of my dear friends (who know how important this is for me) we found the "Gino signing session spot". I was happy to greet you two because a GINO VANNELLI concert without Barend and Trees is not right.
Well, i hope you´ve had a good seat in the darling which was much too small for that big bunch of people who wanted to see Gino. I didn´t see you with one eye. Only Edith told me that she saw you beside the stage. Where have you watched the concert?
I found a seat in the first row and people sat before me down on the floor. (Crazy people)... no we understand.
Zodra Vannelli het podium betreedt klinken opgewonden kreten uit de monden van zijn bewonderaars, die hem bijna vijftien jaar hebben moeten missen. Mijnheer had het te druk met Japanse kloosters en dergelijke, legt de nog steeds kek ogende vijftiger uit aan het publiek. Het blijft een blitskikker, maar zodra hij zijn mond opendoet, vergeven we hem dat. Zonder concurrentie heeft Vannelli de beste stem van deze zaterdagavond. Wat een beheersing, wat een bereik. Vergelijk dat met luchtdrukkanon Tom Jones, of het lieve gemijmer van Michael Bublé, en je hoort meteen waarom Vannelli ooit een wereldster was.
