I don't know how many people were there because I was in the front and couldn't take my eyes off the show, (for fear I would miss something) to check out the audience. Yes, I am American and live in Utah now. I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I will send more pictures and more info. too. Can't wait for your email.
Thanks, Liz (Click here for another picture...)
(8) : A third e-mail from Robin in Calgary, Canada dated 31 July 2006 with the subject : Gino Vannelli in Calgary.
Hi again,
Everytime I said I was going to see Gino Vannelli I had people look at me funny and say "you mean that guy who sang Black Cars"????? Remember most of my friends like myself were in our teens when he had those hits. We met one lady at the Calgary show who saw him in 1977 in Edmonton, she asked me if I had seen him back then, I had to tell her I was only 5 in 1977!!!!! TOO FUNNY!
Thanks again for getting back to me.
Keep up the excellent work!
Robin
(7) : A second e-mail from Robin in Calgary, Canada dated 31 July 2006 with the subject : Gino Vannelli in Calgary.
Hi Thanks for getting back to me.
Here's the song list
Encore
13) People Gotta Move
I didn't get any good pics in Edmonton that I can send to you.
His new album has become my favorite CD, I listen to it ALL THE TIME!!!!!
Hi there
(5) :The Calgary gig was great...
(4) :
saw your WEBPAGE with the photos.
(3) :THANK YOU JOHN SHARPE!!!!
(2) :You're the MAN, Gino! Gino Vannelli is still good for a highly enjoyable evening, with great music and a tremendous band! These days, we get flooded with music. You can see videos on dozens of TV channels, there are more new records than anyone could ever handle and huge festivals take place almost every week. But the more possibilites there are, the more difficult it gets to find the REAL music experience. Does it happen on MTV? Certainly not. Or in stadiums? If you like to pay for seeing your stars on a video wall. No, I think that the real music happens in small clubs. But unfortunately it's a rare occurence to catch a "big one" in a small venue. I had the luck to see Gino Vannelli together with not much more than 100 people. Lucky me!
Performances like these can make you forget about time, and leave floating on air.
THANKS GINO!
(1) : Gino's sound was impeccable, this time around.
The set list was essentially the new album which is very good as well although in some ways I miss the 'old ' Gino style, the systhesizer driven sound.
It was very operatic.
The Concert was terrific, shot of the hassle with Security....you just have to beat them at their own game....
Sorry...!

You'll never hear Gino vannelli sing the same song twice.
While the singer-songwriter has performed hits such as Black Cars hundreds of times the Montreal-native told The Intelligencer fans expecting to hear the album version could be in for a surprise. Through constant tinkering, analyzing and "research and development" vannelli is bringing hits he recorded in the 1970s into the new century.
Speaking from his studio in Portland, Oregon, vannelli said he enjoys this time he spends in the studio and has found it can bring a new sound to some of his older hits.
"I sit and I'll take old songs and I turn them around and turn them around to see what i can do with them and develop new concepts," he said. "It's not remixes it's just trying to understand the nuts and bolts of what's worked in the past and how it applies to the styles today."
Depending upon what he finds with this work some of his songs can change and become new again when he presents them on stage. Recent work on his 1974 hit People Gotta Move has shown him a different style to the song, one which he said is very experimental.
Whether these changes work for audiences at his live shows - such as his upcoming performance at the Empire Theatre Wednesday - is sometimes hard to gauge, he said.
"Some versions are close because audiences want to hear those versions but there's always something different. This isn't a show that's a review. I mean, yes, I'm doing some of my best known songs but the guys I'm with are really creative and we've added new stuff," he said.
A live show shouldn't be about an artist getting up on stage and playing an album tune for tune, vannelli said. Most audiences want to see a band performing together and enjoying themselves even if that means the songs are changed slightly.
"I think people want to see a band get up there and get into what they are doing."
vannelli has been into what he is doing since the 1970s when he released his first album, Crazy Life, in 1973. Three decades and fourteen albums later he said the enjoyment factor hasn't worn off an ounce and fans would likely be surprised to hear how much energy he has and the time he commits to his music.
At the beginning of his career he never focused on the future and didn't consider where he'd be 30 years later. Now that that time has passed and he's got the experience and knowledge behind him vannelli said very little has changed.
"I really don't feel that much different than I did when I was 19. I just love the art form and I love to see what's on the horizon and figure out how I'm going to approach it."
vannelli said he has always approached music with an open mind and it's reflected in his taste. His home is filled with an eclectic collection of cds ranging from country to classical to jazz to hard rock.
"I have so many CDs. In music how can you not be eclectic? How couldn't you appreciate the great music of the 1950s and 60s and even the 40s? I love the great classical musicians and the jazz musicians. I have Hank Williams records, I have Stevie Wonder records and Marvin Gaye and The Beatles..."
The classics are offset by more contemporary bands such as Linkin Park, Maroon 5, Duran Duran and others.
"I've got a lot of music. I listen to everything. I just love music" Fans of vannelli will be able to hear this love of music on Wednesday when he performs at The Empire Theatre. For information phone 613-969-0099 ext. 1.
