:: Gino Vannelli - Warm & Giving ::

Dear Barend & Trees,
I don't have a review on Gino Vannelli's latest CD...yet! I met Gino by chance in Montreal at the airport. He was travelling to Toronto for one of his shows. I immediately recognized him and said hello. He was warm, open, charming and shy. Not what I expected. Gino and I went to the same high-school. He graduated a few years before I did but his reputation (fame) was well known. I followed his career for years after and had many of his albums. I now know that I have to get his new CD (and a few of his prior ones that I missed). He is a beautiful person and went out of his way to invite me to his concert in Toronto. Unfortunately I couldn't attend but I hope to have the pleasure of that experience very soon.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Gino for making me feel special. I am now a renewed fan. Lucia

An e-mail from Peter K. in Toronto, Canada dated Friday 13 March 2006 with the subject : Gino at the Mod Club

hiya Barend and Trees,

Everytime I have seen Gino ( 4 times before this ) the lineup of instruments in his band has been totally different. This was the smallest one I have seen so far--guitar, bass, keyboards, drums. It did work rather well, the bass sounded particularly strong as you could feel it in your chest, without it being overpowering. The Mod club is a fairly small venue--we were in second last row of seats, and still fairly close to the stage creating an intimate feel. The arrangements were fairly basic, not straying TOO far from the originals, unlike his Slow Love tour which included some very interesting modifications of his material. He played about twenty songs including all of the remix cuts from 'These Are The Days'. All in all, it was a tight, enjoyable show

Although Jojo is not as much of a Gino-nut as i am, she enjoyed the show, She has always thought he wasan excellent vocalist, and she thinks he's good-looking too!

Her name is actually 'Joette'--also a wonderful name-- but her father called her Jojo, which was cute, so I called her that as well. 'Jojo' of course is also a title of Gino song, but says it really doesn't 'count' because he is singing about a boy! ha ha Best wishes to you, I think it was terrific honour, you two certainly deserved that tribute! Peter

An e-mail from Chris Casale (Ohio in the U.S.) dated Friday 17 February 2006 with the subject : Review of new Gino CD and concert in Toronto

Dear Barend & Trees, Here are my reviews of both the new Gino "These Are The Days" CD... (number 44) and the concert in Toronto on February 14th (Valentines Day).

Now to the Valentines Day concert at The Mod Club in Toronto...

It was a five and a half hour drive to get to Toronto from our home, here in Northeast Ohio. We arrived outside the venue at 6:55 and there was already a line forming, waiting for the doors to open at 8 pm! The buzz outside from many fans in line, was that the show last week was perfect, in EVERY way and to be ready for a great show! When the doors opened we all filed in and found our seats of choice, since it was a general admission concert (meaning no seats were assigned). My wife and I got two great seats in the front row, just left of center stage.

By the time the lights went down and the show started at approximately 9 pm, EVERYBODY in this "sold-out" room was really excited. Gino and his great "young" band strolled out on stage to "Wild Horses" and the place went nuts! You could tell, right from the start, that Gino was having problems with "his" audio. To my ears, the only problem was that the mids seemed real muddy and that the keyboards were not loud enough in the mix! This sadly, never seemed to change throughout the show! Gino then sat down to perform my all-time favorite song of his "Living Inside Myself" (Note: He is doing this song as originally recorded in 1981 again, not the light jazz approach that he has taken for the past few years. THIS is the way that I personally "love" it!) After that I was in Gino heaven and I can't even remember what he played, but it was ALL great.

That young band of his looks like they could jump right into a song from the rock group "Metallica", but they stayed rght on the GINO track, with just enough energy to not ever overshadow Gino and his stage presence. Great players and VERY nice guys. We had the pleasure of meeting all of them, after the show. Sandlin (the bass player) seems to be the most thrilled with this outstanding opportunity of playing with Gino and was the one guy that really related with us fans, when talking our love of Gino. Now, don't take this the WRONG way, but my wife and I, along with about 10 other REALLY devoted fans felt a bit dismayed that Gino only came out to say hello to those of us that hung around till the venue was near empty, for only a brief minute or two. I know that Gino is very private and he really doesn't like passing himself among us true devotees, BUT, with exception to the lady in the white sweater that dreamed that Gino would take her away on some white horse driven chariot, none of us would have cause any harm to our beloved Gino, trust me! I always feel that he seems threatened by us and I've been trying to speak with him , more than a quick handshake and "thanks for everything" conversation since 1976 and I feel that I'm due that! To take whatever problems he had with the sound out on his fans, was just WRONG and that's all that I can say about it!

I'd like to quickly add that during the last decade or so, while Gino was off soul searching with his "Yonder Tree", "Slow Love" and "Canto" albums, the real fans like my wife and I, along with a few others waiting last Tuesday for Gino to come out, have stayed by him during those years, while most forgot that he even recorded past "Living Inside Myself"!

Thanks to you Barend and Trees, because of you, all of Gino's "real" fans, from all countries, can come to this nice home that you've provided all of us and try to share that rare one-on-one experience that we ALL dream about sharing with Gino! The fact that we had the pleasure of spending a wonderful evening with you both in Montreal about 6 years ago, lets us know that Gino is aware that we are here for him, past the purchase of records, compact discs and tickets to a concert!

Best to you, Chris Casale (Ohio in the U.S.)

Hi Barend and Trees. I thought you could always use some new Gino pictures. These were taken on Wednesday 7 Feb at the Mod Club in Toronto. I finally got up my nerve and pulled out my camera at the end of the show, even though they said no flash photography.

We waited and waited after the show to see Gino. He wasn't feeling well and went straight to the waiting van, but I did manage to ask Gino to pose with me for one shot. I now have it as my screen saver and melt every time I turn on my computer. The concert was fantastic, as expected. Any evening with Gino is fantastic. He looked even better up close. He looks so youthful!!! Hard to believe that he is 53 years old!!!!!!!!

You lucky lucky lucky people!! You spent an entire week with him.! I am so jealous - in a good way. How rewarding for you to meet and spend time with him. After all the work you do on the web site, you deserved to spend some time with him. I appreciate the privacy you have given him in not revealing details of his personal life. Its hard to imagine that he too, is a regular person, who has regular household duties, responsibilities and problems. Its not all about touring and being gorgeous. too bad.

We spent some time chatting with members of the band. They are really nice, down to earth guys who seem to love their jobs.

I am very much looking forward to seeing Gino again on Feb 14 at the Mod Club. I'm hoping to meet Gino again. He's very shy. I"ve met him about 5 times now and he's a man of few words. Just says thank you and thats it. I'll email you again, after the next Gino concert, on Feb 14.

Dear Barend & Trees,
My goodness, I had a fantastic time on Feb. 3rd. Would you believe this is the first time I saw Gino in a concert. Hard to believe since I always admired him since the early years. The other day, I found an old LP hidden away, his FIRST album "Crazy Life" I couldn't believe it!

He has touched me in a way, different from everyone else, I don't look at him as a sex symbol, oh no, when I saw his eyes, honest to God, I saw his soul. Something out of this world, surreal.

Thank you again and please keep me in touch of anything going on, just in case I miss out on anything. And, yes, I have his new album, plus the Canto, plus I purchased yesterday the CD/DVD, where Gino sings Lei in Italian (the translation to SHE, sung originally by Charles Aznavour). This was a tribute to Charles Aznavour which 15 Quebec famous artists put together, singing 15 of the best of his hits. I was almost in tears watchng the DVD of the personal recording of each of the artists, including GINO!!!!

It was a pleasure reading your email. I am attaching a picture of me, as I usually like to put a face to a name. All the best. Christina

An e-mail from Lydia in Vermont, USA dated Friday 12 February 2006 with the subject : Thoughts about Gino and the new cd.

Hello Barend and Trees!
I want to thank you both for creating this venue to express feelings about Gino and his music; it is so wonderful that I can read other fan's feelings and stories and realize that they feel the same way about Gino as I do. I was blessed to be able to see Gino at the Feb.2 Club Soda concert and I am still on cloud nine!!

I live in Vermont and found out about the concert in mid December from your website, so thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! for putting the concert dates here. I had never been fortunate enough to see Gino before and if I had missed the concert I would have been very upset. I have been an admirer of Gino and his beautiful music for over 30 years and to see him on stage, live and only about 50 feet from me, was really a dream come true for me.

There was an electricity in the air while he was on stage and even though I was in a room with many other people I was in my "own little heaven". Gino looked awesome! Still so incredibly handsome and still has the beautiful, powerful voice that I remember from the 70's. If you are reading this, Gino, I want to thank you for your stories - I especially enjoyed hearing you say that your mother was the inspiration for the new cd. Gino, thank you so much for autographing my copy of your new cd and posing for a photo with me, it meant the world to me. I hope you know how much you mean to your fans and I wish for you much success with "These are the days". My favorite songs on it are "Venus Envy", These are the days" and "The Great Divide". When Gino hits the high note toward the end of "The Great Divide" I get misty eyed at the sheer beauty and power of his voice. Gino, you have been my favorite singer for over 30 years and will continue to be for the rest of my life. I'm hoping very much that your new songs will receive much airtime and that you win a Grammy for your outstanding talent. I pray every night for God to watch over you and keep you and your family safe. Thank you again Gino, for the joy you have given me.
God bless you, Lydia in Vermont

I was supposed to go to one of Gino's concerts at Montréal's Club Soda last week but some last minute unforeseens changed the plans. Damn. Wanted to say hello after all these years. Oh well, next time. Nonetheless, the radio station I'm currently on-air with (Q 92 Montréal) has just added Gino's new track
''It's Only Love'' Classy. I love it. Salutations, Marc Denis

1) Wild Horses
2) Living Inside Myself
3) It's Only Love
4) Just A Motion Away
5) A Little Bit of Judas
6) Wheels of Life
7) Brother to Brother
8) Hurts to Be in Love
9) I Die a Little More Each Day
10) Venus Envy
11) I Just Wanna Stop
12) Black Cars

Hello to both of you!
On 2/8/06, I went to Quebec to see Gino’s show. What a marvelous evening I had once again! I also saw the Yonder Tree and Canto shows. As there were on four musicians, I said to myself, that it couldn’t be as good as the other shows, but I was wrong.

The Portland band was formidable or excellent and with Gino’s always, powerful voice, it formed an extraordinary duo. His presence on the stage and his relation with the audience are always special. He told us a few jokes between songs and of course they were in French. The strongest moments of the show were, “Brother to Brother” and before singing “Venus Envy”, when he read us the words and told us that soon there will be a single coming out with this song. Finally, for the encore, the 1,200 + spectators rose to their feet and swayed to the rhythm of “People Gotta Move.”

A most extraordinary feeling.

I didn’t take notes but I think these are the songs:
1) Wild Horses
2) Living Inside Myself
3) It's Only Love
4) Just A Motion Away
5) A Little Bit of Judas
6) Wheels of Life
7) Brother to Brother
8) Hurts to Be in Love
9) I Die a Little More Each Day

Good-bye to both of you for now and congratulations on your marvelous website dedicated to Gino, that I visit regularly. You are the best fans in this world!

A second e-mail from Judy M. in Ohio, USA, dated 11 February 2006 with the subject : Montreal, February 2 & 3, 2006

Hello Barend and Trees,
I wanted to add my comments to your page.

It was a week ago I got ROCKED in Montreal! I arrived at the hotel and checked in. I walked to Club Soda to check it out and to get my 2nd night ticket. The guys were inside doing sound check. I wanted so badly to sneak in, but didn't. I then walked down the street in search of a record store. I found one, and went in and bought 4 CD's!!! (One is never enough, and you gotta pick up a couple for friends, right?!)

I went back to my hotel, opened the CD, put the headset on and started to read and jam. Prior to hearing the CD the first time, I had only heard the samples you had on your web site. It's funny, cause I wasn't sure what I thought of "It's Only Love", but found myself humming the sample over and over before hearing the whole CD. Well, from the first beat of that song (which was totally different from my preconceived notion based upon the sample) to the final remixes of old songs, I was blown away! I love, LOVE, LOVE, the entire CD. The 7 new songs offer a great combination of rock and ballads. I was pleased to see your names on the liner notes, and to see that David Goldblatt had worked on the CD. Everything was new and wonderful, but there was an instantaneous familiarity...by the time I went to the show I could almost sing along word for word on the 2 songs in the show. I had talked to Cyndi before I went and between that and hearing the music I was beyond ready to hear Gino and it was time to go to the show!

When I arrived at Club Soda, there was already a long line!!! The first night I sat on the side, about half way to the stage. My pictures didn't do justice to my view and the performance, but I have sent them to you to put on your site. It was a nice club with seating on the main floor, and a balcony. The shows were sold out, but it was good seating for all!

The band came out to wild applause, and Gino came out right behind them. The song list has been stated, so I won't list it here. I have to say when I heard the first beats of "It's Only Love", I got chills. And what was really cool was to look at the audience and see how they were jamming! There were so many people that were singing along, they already knew the music! For those of you who have seen Gino in the last couple of years, don't expect the same ole songs, cause he has reworked the arrangements. I have my favorites (never, never will I get tired of Hurts To Be In Love), but this time around I was impressed with Just A Motion Away (Allen & Sandin's back up vocals rock!), and "A Little Bit of Judas" and "I Die A Little More Each Day" (Gino said the 2nd night that I Die A Little More Each Day was now a "happy song") (I'm telling ya all, you just gotta go and see!!) So it was time for "Venus Envy", and Gino told a little story about his Mom, and how she liked the song, but when he told her the title, she said What kind of name is that for a song? It was her favorite, and Mrs. Vannelli was jamming at her table. The guy sitting in front of me turned around and pointed her out and asked me if it was Mrs. Vannelli, cause she was so into it!

During the intermission, I got to speak to Uncle Vic, and the Vannelli family. I also got to talk to Alain Caron. He and Otmaro are getting ready to come to Europe with Frank Gambale. I saw Fred from Gino's previous shows. I got an opportunity to say hello to Pasquale, Gino's old friend who I got to meet back a couple of tours ago.

After the show Gino came out and signed autographs and took pictures. I didn't get a chance to speak to Gino! I was kinda bummed, but told everybody to tell him Hello from me. I did get to talk to Sandin Wilson (bass player), and what a nice man! He is very expressive on stage. I got to say hello to Randy Porter and Allen Hinds. Reinhardt Metz was a very quiet guy, but I thanked him for a great show.

I went back to my hotel with the music swirling in my mind. I woke up to a drizzly, rainy day. I took it easy, and got ready for the 2nd show. I decided to go earlier, and when I arrived at Club Soda, there were only two other girls there. I tried to talk with them, and soon the crowd grew again. A lady that was helping Gino's manager (Heather, I think her name was) came outside and said the guys were going to leave early the next day. I was afraid I wouldn't get to say hello to Gino, so I decided to sit right down in front! The crowd was excited, and the 2nd show was the most incredible experience. When I first emailed you Barend and Trees, I said that show was (for me) like falling in love with Gino's music all over again. I can't even paint a word picture for you to describe it! Fun is a very short word that covers it. Happy! The band was so hot the 2nd night. Tight! It was just IT!! I was so into the music and the performance.

At first I thought surely Gino must see me sitting right in front, but I didn't catch his eye right away. During the 2nd song, he looked down, and (Okay, I'm probably embellishing here, but this how it felt) he looked at me, and then gestured at the band. ( In my mind, I heard "Judy-listen to these guys-they are incredible!--what do you think?) When Gino sang I Just Wanna Stop, the entire place was sing back up! It was so fun! Gino talked between songs, and he is tells the funniest stories. Another surprise the 2nd night, it was Randy Porter's birthday, and Gino went off the stage for a few minutes, and came back to the stage with a birthday cake! Randy's reaction was so cute, a combination embarrassed (in a good way!) and pleased! (Randy--you look so good for a 22 year old! LOL!!) Gino seems very happy with his record label, and it showed I think the audience was on it's feet the last couple of songs, and the standing ovation lasted beyond the house lights going up!

After the show, Gino did come out and sign autographs. Heather saw me, and pulled me up toward Gino. I had a promotional postcard and she tried to get him to autograph it. Gino's manager came out for Gino, and as Heather handed me the postcard, Gino looked over and saw me. I got to say hello, and he went back stage. I was talking to some of Gino's family, and Gino came back out. I got a few minutes to talk with Gino.

Between songs, Gino told a story about some fans that wanted to take a picture with him, and he was reminded of when his father told him it only took a few minutes and only a little effort to show kindness. Gino, you showed me that kindness, and I am grateful and very touched!

So to all who have read, all I can say is I can't wait to see another show! My advise to all the Gino fans, get the CD, get a ticket, and be prepared to have FUN!!

All the concerts in Montréal, Quebec, Canada are sold out so if you hear about new concerts in Montréal, NOT true !!! Maybe there are promoting performances for the business people and companies or miscelleneous work to promote Gino Vannelli's new cd : THESE ARE THE DAYS but no more real live concerts in Montréal. The first Toronto concert is sold out too for sure !!! Check out the venues yourselves when you really wanna go to one of the last GINO VANNELLI live concerts in Canada...

A few words from the Editors in Holland : dated Sunday 29 January 2006 up to Tuesday 31 January 2006 while chasing the managements and record company for the right Gino dates...
Subject : Tickets for a GINO VANNELLI concert.

Thank God, Chris and Christine could buy tickets at Saterdaymorning 28 January 2006 when the tickets sale started for the new show in Toronto!!! and that's only because they investigated themselves on the world wide web and NOT thanks to the official web sites or the managements or the record company because they do not mention this added Gino Vannelli show anywhere not till today 29 and 30 January 2006 for sure... It's unfair to the fans, we know, because the START of the tickets sales is very important for the fans to get good places in the venue and nobody mentions this added show on their web sites. In spite of everything Chris and Christine can have a beautiful Valentines Day in Toronto Canada !!!

And about eBay : We feel the sellers take advantage of the despair and sadness of people who did not know about the start of a tickets sale... And they earn a lot of money which is suppose to be for the artist... That's our humble opinion !!! The artist will NOT get it but we feel the artist should get it !!! We feel everybody steals money away in all kinds of matters, illegal tickets sales, illegal downloading and illegal copying and more... All the wrong earnings should go to the artist who does all the hard and difficult work and who shares His talent with us all !!! The path of an artist is not that smooth and glamourous as millions of people think !!!

Anyways Chris and Christine have the right tickets for the right price because they were alert and payed attention on last Saterdaymorning !!! They really, really want to hear and see Gino Vannelli live on stage... ENJOY !!! By the way on Tuesday 31 January 2006 we in Holland could read the new added dates on the Universal official Gino Vannelli web site for Gino Vannelli concerts in Montréal and Toronto while the tickets already started ??? Is Gino Vannelli's management in Canada up to date and fast or not ??? What a life !!!

Dear Barend and Trees,
Thank you for writing with your heartfelt feelings about us not getting tickets to see Gino on February 7th in Toronto, but there is GREAT NEWS as they have added another Toronto date on February 14th (Valentine's Day) at The Mod Club! I plan on getting tickets as a Valentine's Day gift for my wife, I just wish that I could get us backstage to talk with Gino for a few minutes to wish him well with his new album "These Are The Days". THESE really are the days... to get more great memories with Gino! I only wish that you both could be there too and we could share more memories, like we did in Montreal back in 2000 in the hotel bar that long night! We will NEVER forget the kindness of yours to share that video of the day's rehearsal!

Here is a link to the promoter's web page... Emerge Entertainment INC.

Best to you both, Chris and Christine C. in the USA.

Subject : SOLD OUT!!!!

Dear Barend and Trees,
Well to say that we are "TOTALLY" bummed, would be an understatement! After taking the time to get my wife off work at a Children's Hospital for two days, so we could get tickets to see Gino in Toronto, Canada at The Mod Club (The only concert that is remotely close to us at 5 hours away!) and I went to buy two tickets this morning and I discover that the show is SOLD OUT!

We are both very disappointed!

Why can't Gino do more concerts in Toronto, or near Ohio in the U.S.? God knows he has enough fans down this way! He was an idol in Pittsburgh, why doesn't he ever play there anymore?

Sad news for us! How can we get excited about Gino, if we can't get tickets?
Chris and Christine in the USA.

THE AFTER CONCERT FEELINGS :

A message from our Gino Vannelli guestbook from Norm C. in Quebec, Canada dated 10 February 2006.

I saw Gino's new show in Quebec City last night and I'm still surfin' on it!
The room was filled with musicians, music instruments and sound equipement retailers, TV production crews, and connaisseurs. No more Canto or Jazz-trio trip, Gino is finally back to his "Powerful" sound that made him famous in the 70's.

His new band is extremely talented. Randy Porter is very confortable on the keyboard with all those jazzy harmonies. Allan Hinds is a true virtuoso on guitar. Sandin Wilson feels so good playing the bass on Gino's material, and Reinhardt Metz brings the drums to a new athletic level of performance: he even surprised Gino (ex-drummer himself) with a couple of new original punches.

So impressive ! Thanks Gino for making my gal and me feel so good. Norm

Subject : Gino in Trois-Rivières

Hi Trees, Hi Barend, We had another superb performance last Friday, (January 27th) in Trois-Rivières.
This is the second concert in 7 months that Gino gave in « la Mauricie », the other one was in Shawinigan for the Festival d’été last June. Every concert is unique and Gino always surprises us with new songs or new arrangement for older songs. This shows Gino unique creative musical power.

For the last week show, we had the same set list that Hélène M. describe in a previous email and like the show in Montréal, only 1 « rappel », but with everybody up and dancing.

We have been following Gino since the early 70’s and our daugther (that you can see in the picture) was not even born at that time. Now there is nothing on earth that will make her miss Gino when he his playing in our area.

Gino, thank you for keeping our musical spirit alive and to answer to one of your comment during the show in Trois-Rivières, you are welcome any time to do skidoo in la Mauricie J

Hello My Friends,
sorry didn't get back to you sooner just got in it's 2:00 a.m. I just drove Mrs. Vannelli home we had dinner with Gino after show.

Both shows were sold out and were both fantastic.... The second show was a little better as the band a little tighter. Gino was in great form on both nights the crowd went wild on both nights, but on second show they still chanted for Gino to come out even with the house lights on. But Gino was tired.

Wish you guys were here. Anyhow I am tired and will talk to you both soon.

Yes, Daniel and Louis realy love this concert. It was not the first concert of Gino they saw but they tell me both that it was the best one! They didn’t stay with me for the autograph session, the guys are shy to ask autograph to another guy!!!

Also, I have to tell you that I was too shy to told at Gino that we send me a e-mail asking for a hugh!!! I was afraid he could thing that a use your «notorious» to obtain an extra!!! LOL!!!

Goodnight !
I'm just coming back from Gino's concert. Again, Gino surprised me with new interpretations of his popular songs. I saw him in concert in Montreal many times and tonight again, he surprised me. I find it amazing. On my opinion, you need a big and real talent to give music a different colour each time. Gino Vannelli and his musicians are doing it each time. I particularly liked his new version of Wheels of Life which is softer (he's sitting while it's interpretation) and he did a happier (almost reggae) version of A little bit of Judas.

The musicians are wonderful. Again, there is a beautiful complicity between each other. Everyone seems enjoying the stage, especially the baseman. He's so energic! God knows how much I liked the Montreal's band but trust me, I wasn't deceived by the Portland gang! A nice experience for me.

Gino's voice was PERFECT, as always. This nice and warm voice, full of emotions. He keeps it since its beginning and with the years, nice additional tones are added. What more can you ask for? He was it a great shape and he seemed to be happy to be home.

My only regret is that he did only one curtain call. He's usually more generous with it's Montreal fans. But maybe he wanted to keep its energy for the autograph session, offered right after the show. He was smiling and giving attention to everyone. This is usual and lovely, as always...!

I think he played the same songs and in the same order than on the 2nd concert in Portland (I read Teresa L.'s message).

1) Wild Horses
2) Living Inside Myself
3) It's Only Love
4) Just A Motion Away
5) A Little Bit of Judas
6) Wheels of Life
7) Brother to Brother
8) Hurts to Be in Love
9) I Die a Little More Each Day
10) Venus Envy
11) I Just Wanna Stop
12) Black Cars

Encore

13) People Gotta Move

I won't have the chance to see him again in concert in Montreal during next days and I regret it a lot (usually, I go more than once) but I am full of satisfaction. Tonight I saw and listened to an excellent concert.

Thanks to Gino and his musicians!

Hélène M. Montreal

An e-mail from Hélène M. dated 31 January 2006 right after the Gino Vannelli live concert in Laval, Quebec, Canada.
Subject : Concert of January 30, Salle André Mathieu

Hi Trees, Hi Barend,
I just left the concert. It was great! My feet don't touch the ground!!!
I send you my first impression in French because if I try to do this in English it will not reflecting my emotions. I will try to do my own translation of this e-mail as soon as possible. But for the moment, you can use it in French for your web site. If you want. Take cares!

Bonsoir,

1) Wild Horses
2) Living Inside Myself
3) It's Only Love
4) Just A Motion Away
5) A Little Bit of Judas
6) Wheels of Life
7) Brother to Brother
8) Hurts to Be in Love
9) I Die a Little More Each Day
10) Venus Envy
11) I Just Wanna Stop
12) Black Cars

Encore

13) People Gotta Move

Subject : Gino Vannelli

Barend and Tree,
Just came back from Canada where I saw two Gino Vannelli concerts. I actually flew from Florida Friday morning (left home at 4AM) to see his concert Friday night (8PM). As usual, he's AWESOME. I especially love 'Venus Envy' ... simply brilliant. His new album is, as usual priceless. A bit disappointed that he added 7 of his old songs ... I already have all those on other CDs. I would have preferred 14 new songs! :-)

Anyway, he was staying at the same hotel as I was (for the second concert) and got to see him a few times. Unfortunately, everytime I tried to approach him to talk, he seemed distant. I was sitting next to Gino in a 'computer room' for 45+ minutes but I didn't 'dare' bother him as he was doing e-mails. I would not have like that he tell me to not 'bother him anymore'. Anyway, I was disappointed that I didn't get to finally speak with him (after listening to his music for 33 or so years). You would think that being on 'tour' he'd want to 'mingle' with his fans. Not at all! Maybe next time. Don't get me wrong, I still think he's the absolute best musician that ever lived! However, I got to chat with his musicians which were all quite nice.
Hope you are both doing well.
Regards, Jean

Bonjour,
Tu as touché mon coeur Gino! J'ai 35 ans, mais je me souviens très bien de ta belle voix dans "It Hurts To Be In Love".

-xXx-Mathye Losier

Hi , B&T How are u?
Hey thanks…. WOW.. I Just read my own review on the web site, …. (that feels weird…)… I also read some of the other reviews, ….. nice to see that Gino still rocks In all of us.

One thing is for sure, Gino’s is a great singer and a great artist, his original style and music portray a unique excellence into the world of music and song. I’ve been a Gino Vannelli fan since the mid 70’s, I’ve seen most of his shows here in Montreal, through the years, including the “CANTO” tour at the “Gesu “ theatre in Montreal in 2003, ….. He’s better than ever, and once again during these cold winter nights of winter 2006 he has managed to surprise us and entertain us with his magical mystique. Take care

As soon as i head that Gino Vannelli was performing at The Capitol Centre in North Bay Ontario on January 13, 2006, less than 160 kilometers from where i live i jumped at the chance and purchased a ticket.

Quite truthfully i was wondering if his voice would have that silk smooth texture and dynamic range that i have heard and love on so many of his records and cds. Well let me tell you i got a very pleasant surprise, Gino's voice was incredible with a wonderful timbre and effortless range, he is truely an amazing performer. HIs new band is very polished and they sounded wonderful. I am very excited about the two new songs i heard, "It's only love", and "venus envy", they show his never ending creativity in music.

I can hardly wait to purchase his new cd. I was very impressed with Gino's humility and his intereaction with the audience. The show was a wonderful experience for me. I would go and see him again in a heartbeat. Michael.

Hello again from Teresa in Toronto, Canada
Thank you for your quick response. Yes, having a supportive home life definately helps and allows for creativity! How many times have you two seen Gino in concert? Have you spent any time speaking with him? I met him 2 times in Toronto, He is a man of few words and very shy. Very different from his stage persona. Its interesting that Gino has such a huge following in the Netherlands! Where are you living now? My family was in Holland 2 summers ago. Loved it. Just a little nervous parking by the canals in Maastrich!

I am anxiously awaiting the release of his new CD. January 24. Venus envy is interesting with its timely lyrics! good melody as well.

Canto???? It was OK. Too heavy for my tastes. I love the early Gino stuff. Pauper in Paradise. Gist of the Gemini, Brother to Brother. Not a fan of the commercial hits. Black Cars,,,,, too commercial for my tastes. but it got him on the charts which I suppose pays the bills.

I see Gino again in Toronto at the Mod Club on Tuesday Feb 7. OPen admission. I'll be first in line! Can't wait. Regards
Teresa

Subject : RE: Gino at the Lionel Groulx theatre (St.Therese Quebec)

HELLO B&T
GINO VANNELLI ROCKS BIG TIME……….
I was completely blown away last night at the show at the Lionel Groulx Theatre (in St.Therese Quebec) .
The concert was a huge success, Gino’s soft melodic, powerful and perfect pitched vocals filled the theatre with a stunning presence and beautiful melodic nuances to some of his old great hits like “Black cars”, “ wheels of life”, “I just wanna stop”, Brother to Brother” etc., as well as his latest songs.

I particularly enjoyed the revamped old tunes rearranged to a jazzy feel, or better yet, a some-what fusion/Latin feel, but still coming through with a very progressive punch. What a GREAT band…. 4 excellent musicians blending together to deliver a strong powerful performance, integrating their own particular styles to the already complex music of Gino Vannelli.

I was particularly impressed by that funk/fusion drummer Reinhardt Metz… (Being a drummer myself), I could very well appreciate his innovative style and his precise syncopated polyrhythmic drum playing on most of the songs, …..also Sandin wilson on fretless bass guitar, a distinguished style and a particular sound that blended beautifully into the mixture.

All in all ….. Gino Vannelli and his band delivered a strong powerful performance last night, one to remember for a long time.

I strongly recommend this ONE to all the Gino Vannelli fans……

I’ll be at the Club Soda show on February 2 as well….. Looking forward to another beautiful evening with Gino and his great band.
Ciao for now…… I’LL be back
Lucio.......... To the top of this web page again ???

Hello to you both,
it's 23:30 e.t. just got back from Gino's show...........Truly amazing.
The band warmed up a capacity crowd which gave a 15 minute standing ovation after show. Gino sang extraordinary. He signed autographs and took pictures with the fans. When I spoke to him afterwards he said he was tired. Montreal just added a 2nd show and that will be great. The musicians are very nice and love the rock feel to the material. I picked up the new album as they sell them after the show. The new stuff is really up to date and commercially should be a big success. Didn't sell my remaining 70 t-shirts but Gino will fix a date for the sale in the upcoming weeks at one of the shows. I myself am tired as I had fever of 100 and still attended the show. I guess after 30 years of seeing Gino perform you never get enough....
take care

Hi:
I was able to attend Gino's concert @ the Heritage Theatre in Brampton last Thursday.
Thanks to your site I was able to get in on the list for good tickets by reading it first on your website.

I had him sign two tickets but one didn't come out very well & two programs. I would like to donate one of each item to your auction. First of all what charity does the money go to? When is the next auction? What is your address in Holland so I can mail these items to you. It was on your website that I heard about Gino's concert.

He'll be back in Toronto to play the Mod Club in Feb. I think it's the 12th. It's generaladmission w/ limited seats. The album should be out next week. Keep up the good work I love you guys (are you both guys?) Have you noticed the autograph change from Gino Vannelli with a happy swish to Gino V? Hoping to hear from you soon, Heather H.

Dear Barend & Trees,
Our trip to Canada was WONDERFUL!
Four shows in five days. GINO and his extraordinary new band were FANTASTIC!!!! Great musicians who really complement each other and create great chemistry and music with GINO. In spite of not feeling well, GINO rocked us all with new songs and reworked classics.

The first two shows were SOLD OUT and the audience at the Brampton show was quite an enthusiastic crowd. GINO entertained us all with a few stories about his career in the early years. The show in Barrie was a perfect ending for us. Our seats were front and center, the band was really together and GINO was feeling better and very happy. Superb show. Many at the show purchased the new CD and waited after the show for the meet and greet. GINO was kind and friendly to all. It was truly a week of shows to put in our memories forever.
All the best, Mary Lou

Hi,
As a matter of fact I’ve been following Gino’s Canadian tour every day since the first week of January on your web site, I’ve been reading the reviews that you have been publishing daily in the ``Canada 2006`` section … thanks for letting us know all those wonderful news and updates about the tour.

I’m very glad to hear that the tour has been a great success thus far, (despite his cold ) , it seems his vocal range and powerful voice improve constantly …. I also hear that his new band ROCKS…..

YES DEFINITELY, I`ve already got the tickets for the February 2 show at the Club Soda in Montréal….. But more importantly…TONIGHT , the 18 of jan. 2006 , I will be at Gino Vannelli concert at the St. Therese Theatre (lionel Groulx College) in the town of St. Therese, which is about 30 minutes north of Montreal.

2 of my friends and Myself decided yesterday to drive up there to go see the show in St. Therese and get an early start on Gino Vannelli`s tour. I just called for tickets (I know im quite late ,… last minute decision) but there are still some balcony seats available. I am also considering to attend the Laval show on jan 30 (don’t know yet about the availability of the tickets) . I’ll let you know tomorrow About the concert.. if you wish. By-the way ; Gino Vannelli will be at the Club Soda in Montreal on the 2 AND 3 of February . take care for now.

Cheers to all you loyal Gino fans worldwide!

Have been a big fan of Gino's progressive and creative music for years, so it was wonderful to hear his kickin' band burn through Brother to Brother at their recent Barrie, Ontario (Canada) gig.

Hearing Uzeb tracks in the house before the show set the stage for a great night of revamped (new grooves, some new harmony etc.) hits, and heart-felt new songs for about 600 (at 42, I was one of the younger audience members, alas). To be honest, my interest in Gino had waned over the 90's (still haven't heard the "jazz" albums from that era,) but was completely renewed with his incredible CANTO release, which I still play daily. I'm only sorry I missed that tour a few years back, but highly recommend this ONE OF A KIND work of pure genius. Bought his new album, THESE ARE THE DAYS, at the show and recommend it. No immediate hits (as if that mattered) but songs like It's Only Love and Venus Envy are growing quickly on me.

His influences are more apparent this time round (Jamie Cullum, Herbie Hancock, Sting, Henley, etc.) but adapted originally enough to warrant repeated listenings that are guaranteed to provide lots of toe-tapping moments and reveal numerous pleasant surprises.

Anyway, the band was truly awesome. My only complaint was now that Gino's lyric writing has matured into finely-crafted poetry, it was overly difficult to hear the words above the intricate and inventive drum playing of Reinhardt Metz and mind-blowing, soaring melodic fretless work (not to mention pleasant back up vocals) of Sandin Wilson. Couldn't hear the keyboards either. Guitar got turned up about 1/2 way through. I guess it's tough to adapt to the different rooms but... Loved Gino's little asides between tunes, too.

Was just sorry to have it end nearly 2 hours in. There's another show playing Toronto and I'm busy emialing friends to recommend they head down to check it out.
Happy listening, all!

Subject : GINO VANNELLI last sunday in the Gryphon...

We do not have enough words to praise this genius called Gino Vanelli. He takes us along with his music and lyrics to that special place that we may call the GINO VANNELLI MUSIC HEAVEN, thoughts and feelings altogether. I got THESE ARE THE DAYS last sunday and the moment I had the CD in my hands, I felt that I was going to be transported to a new discovery. Indeed I was and I will never get tired listening to this marvelous talented man. Thank God for giving us the way to enjoy music, exactly the way Gino brings it to us. Each of these songs brings us a message, about life, love, sadness, and the reality of life, either great or not. He has gotten a great git from the Almighty. JOE.

Subject : GINO in Canada

Wow! We had some great times in Canada this past week. What a great group of guys in the band too. They are all really sweet and very personable.

The shows went well with a few technical problems but they all sounded great. GINO was singing with a cold and sore throat but if you didn't know that ahead of time, you wouldn't have known at all. He has such an a amazing voice and range. The last show in Barrie was the best so far by far! They were totally "on" and GINO was dancing around the stage and felt noticeably better. I managed to take some shots but many are dark. They sold the CD on Sunday and I bought a lot of copies just in case it doesn't get to the States for a while. It is a great CD and I really enjoyed listening to it all the way home. Gino didn't spend as much time after the shows as usual but I think he just wasn't feeling well enough to stay and mingle with the fans.

The entire 4 concerts in 5 days experience was really a cool thing to have done. It was fun getting to know the guys and seeing some of Canada along the way. I have had my GINO fix now for a while... well, not too long. I may have to check out some shows in March or April since I'll be needing another dose of GINO by then.

At one of the shows, they had a wall of GINO pictures and information on him. It was so funny since the more I recognized the pictures I realized I HAD TAKEN THEM!!!! They must have got them from the internet and blown them up for the wall. It was fun. I took a picture of MY pictures of GINO! I was glad to share with the fans of North Bay Ontario.

We had great weather for the trip too. It was cold but no snow or ice or anything that would make for bad traveling. We were blessed with good weather, great music and good people. All the shows were good but at the last one there was more energy and a better "feel" for the music. It really sounded great and the band played well. It was a great show to go home on. Everyone was nice and I hope to see them again soon. I noticed you got mentioned on the notes on the CD jacket...way to go, you deserve it. Keep up the good work. Patti

Subject : gino's show...st catherines

Dear B&T,
Sorry it's been awhile since i have written, but wanted to let you's know about the show... as always GINO was just PERFECT... his voice is stonger then ever, even with the bad cold he had, his moves were great and that man never ages... hahaha i still think he drinks magic water.

The band really rocks, what a sound....
It was a perfect show and a perfect night and i did finally get a picture of gino and i after the show, when the new cd comes out it will be a big hit... Venus is great, i just love it and to see gino do it live knocked me off my seat... all the songs were amazing, jazz and pop all in one, wow... Black Cars blew me away also... just a magic night...

Here is a cute little story, as judy and i got to customs at the peace bridge, the man ask were we were going and said st. catherines for a concert, then he ask what show and we told him Gino Vannelli, he put a big grin on his face and ask... he still around ??? oh yes we said bigger then ever, then he said to you know he from Montreal, and again we said yes and now we were laughing... his favorite song was black cars, so judy and i started to promote gino's new cd and told him to watch out for it, for it will be out soon, so he pointed us in st. catherines direction and we were on on way, but the funny thing was he never asked were we were from and never did ask for proof... we got to st. catherines in less then 35 minutes so that was great, and since i live less then 5 minutes by car to the peace bridge was even better.

When gino came to the bar / restaurant after the show , i told him the story and he got a laugh out of that... Gino only stood for less then a hour, but it was great, judy, cyndi, patty and rob were there and the band members, the guys in the band are great... so friendly ! Also Mike the road manager, we talked for a long time, what a great guy... Sandin & I did alot of laughing, i called him my portland boy... It turned out to be a perfect night and yet another night of memories of a wonderful GINO VANNELLI show that i won't ever forget.

Judy and i came back too Buffalo like we were flying high in the sky... Cyndi and patty and a few others stayed on for the next show... Cyndi and Rob came back to my house after the Brampton show, Rob was a sweetie, he had cyndi follow him to my door step, were she spent the night here with me in Buffalo before she left to go back home on friday... Cyndi has become a very dear friend, and she is a wonderful and beautiful women, and it has happened due too gino's show's, so i thank gino for making a great friendship with cyndi... she will be a dear friend forever.... Judy and i also got to meet patty, rob, marylou, and laura and there all very nice people... Gino has alot of great fans and devoted fans... I don't know when i'll be seeing another show, i am hopeing for a east coast show around the summer, if it's close enough to Buffalo , Judy and i will be there in a flash... if not , the memories from ST.CATHERINES will last forever, Gino was great, his voice is better then ever and the stories he tells on stage were full of humor, he had the fans rolling with laughter... BRAVO GINO....YOU ARE THE MASTER ! I'm sending a few pictures, i hope you can use them, we weren't allowed to take pictures during the show, but i have a few from the lounge, so injoy my dear friends... Hugs from Buffalo, ciao, Donna Marie

Hello!
I , too, am a HUGE Gino fan!. Thank you so much for your very detailed web site and info on Gino. Very much appreciated. I saw him in concert last night in Toronto........for the 6th time. It amazes me how THIN, fit and young looking he is, despite his 53 years of age. Does any one know his life style routines? Is he an exercise fanatic? Does he only eat macrobiotic foods? What's his secret to maintaining his 18 year old like body? Please don't burst my bubble and tell me he smokes 2 packs a day to stay thin!!!!!! He appears to be very much into health, clean living and rigorous fitness. I read somewhere that he does bikram yoga... but what else?

If you or any fan have the inside scoop , I'd be thrilled to hear!!!! Thank you
Teresa, Toronto, Canada

Good Morning B & T....WOW!!!
What a Gino show... Unbelievable... I absolutely love his new Band... They rock... Gino had a cold but was memorizing as always... We all met in the lobby... MaryLou, Patti, Cyndi, Laura, Donna and myself... I love "Venus Envy"... Awesome song... He was so cute... He was telling his stories and the audience loved the personal touch... This concert is a HIT!!! There were young and "old" there... Everyone connected with him... This man is so amazing... He just pulls you in and grabs your Heart and you're hooked!!! He did a very small met & greet... You could tell he really didn't feel well... Graham Lear was there!! He was Gino's drummer back in the day...

We went back to the Hotel for something to eat and all the musicians were at the bar... Great bunch of guys and very friendly... We had such a good time there as well... We were all telling stories and laughing, then The Master walked in... He was so cute... He stayed with us for about an hour... Rob and Patti and Cyndi got some great pictures... We weren't allowed to take pictures at the Venue but WE DID!!! I asked him to please let me take a picture of Him and Donna and he said sure... So we all snapped away... I told him Please Gino... She's tortured me since Syracuse because I cut your Head off... He cracked up... So Donna is now in GINO Heaven.... I'll write more later, I want to relive my memories of last night... GOD BLESS YOU BOTH!!!

WOW!!!!!!!!! I loved it. I know I've said this after all the shows but this time it was just TOO COOL!!! The new songs are so funky and fun and the way Gino has reworked the others has been my favorite so far.

The Band is great, and I don't mean to imply that there was something lacking in Gino's other musicians!!!!!!!!!!!! This is just more my style. They just have such a "touchable" feel together. Like they could be playing in my backyard. ( I WISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) Sandin and Allen singing backup was my favorite!!! Regardless of what Allen thinks of his singing! The guys are all great musicians, and very personable and funny. Ken and I had a wonderful time and we can't wait to see them all again.

Hi
I’m Looking forward for Gino’s show here in Montreal (Quebec, Canada) on the 2 of February 2006.

I’ve been looking to purchase a DVD : Gino Vannelli live concert (any live concert in 2005). I looked everywhere here in Montreal But I was unable to find any DVD or any info about his live concerts. I was just wondering if there are any DVD presently available in the record stores here in Montreal, or if there will be in the near future. Really looking forward to the show. Congratulations
Regards Lucio

Gino Vannelli 'updates' himself, returns to pop on new album

TORONTO (CP) - Gino Vannelli, the curly-haired pop star known for smash hits like Wild Horses and Black Cars, has resurfaced with an album that contains old hits as well as seven newly penned tracks.

"It was a kick to do. A big learning experience," said the singer, 53. "With an open mind, a little humility . . . You can really actually update yourself." The Montreal-born singer, famed for his funky grooves, had sworn off the pop genre after his early '90s album received lukewarm receptions.

He turned to jazz and big band and later classical, releasing Canto in 2003, an album which had him singing romantic arias in French, Spanish and Italian.

"Never say never," said Vannelli of These Are the Days, out next week in Canada. It'll be released in Europe and the U.S. later in the year.

The album features seven new songs and seven remastered old ones. The first single, the jazzy-pop track It's Only Love, has Vannelli back on radio waves.

"It seemed to me that after Canto that I didn't want to go and record another classical album," he explained.

But then Universal Canada called to suggest a "best of" album. The label wanted to include one or two new songs as is now tradition on greatest hits album.

Vannelli, who settled in Portland, Ore., more than a decade ago, said he ran into some trouble when he sat down to pen new songs having spent time dabbling in jazz and classical genres, as well as updating his music theory degree from McGill University.

"It was quite a task I found to come up with something very contemporary. I really wanted the songs to be as good in their own right as some of the hits were in the past," he said.

"I found that my skills were more inclined to lean towards a complex, different kind of material. It took a few months to align myself with a new pattern."

He listened to Top 40 radio and studied modern-day pop stars such as John Mayer. He also spent time poring over his 19-year-old son's music collection.

"Too many people that record more complex music, classical or jazz, when they get into the pop realm they take for granted that they know everything. They don't have conviction."

"I tried to understand the (pop) language again . . . Then the pop sensibility just came out."

It's been about 40 years since Vannelli first started in the music business.

Under the moniker Van Elli, he signed his first record contract at 16. He then took off to the States, where he put out six albums in the 1970s, including Brother to Brother.

In his heyday, he was all over the airwaves. He opened for Stevie Wonder and, in 1975, became the first white artist to appear on Soul Train.

In those days, music "was everything" to people, recalled Vannelli.

"I came from the generation where kids didn't have IPods and computers. People sat down and really listened," he said.

"Today more people do something while listening to music. I had to come to grips with that. You're trying to help people get through their day, and, yet you're trying to be artistic and all those things to satisfy your own needs as an artist."

Vannelli has hit the road again - his first "intense tour in years." He's currently playing shows in Ontario and Quebec.
