An e-mail from Ramona in Detroit, USA, dated 7 July 2005. With the subject : Detroit concert

Dear Barend and Trees:
As you already know I have been a fan of Gino Vannelli for 33 years. This is the first time he has given a concert close enough for me to attend. My daughter, knowing how long I have been a fan and how long I have waited to see him in concert, brought her camera to take pictures (they are attached to this email) to make it TANGIBLY MEMORABLE. The first thing we did, of course, was to take a picture of the theater marquee.

As we were walking to dinner in Greektown, we saw the theater door open on the side. I heard this magnificent voice soaring out of the doorway and told my daughter and friend that it had to be Gino rehearsing because it sounded sooooo good. I wanted to go to the stage door to see if I could catch a glimpse of him to make sure he was really here-no cancellations or anything, but there was a security person there and he didn't look like he was in a good mood so we just kept walking. We had dinner at a casual family restaurant called the Olympia. The food was delicious, reasonably priced and we had good service--and there is an unbelievable bakery across the street IF you have any room left for dessert or want something sweet for later. ( I was so excited by this time that I could barely eat. I just wanted dinner over with to the concert could start!!! The food was really good and my neighbor has had the same dishes prepared for her by a Greek lady and she loved the food we were served there. We are going back to the restaurant later this month.) It was about now that I realized I forgot to get flowers to give to Gino, although I have no idea what he might like or if he is allergic to anything. Oh well,---if there is ever a next time.

We went back to the theater and bought programs. There were also some of his CDs for sale. People had albums and things which they had brought to have autographed. I had one small item tucked in my purse which I hoped to get autographed but, but as you know, was unable to.

The concert started and when Gino came out on the stage I could not believe my eyes. He looks AMAZING. I told my neighbor how old he is and she asked me if I was "sure." She thought he looked so much younger also. The first song he sang was my daughter's favorite, "Wild Horses," and that made her grin ear to ear. The list of songs I can remember are as follows but may not be in order:

Wild Horses (my daughter's favorite)
Living Inside Myself (one that my neighbor likes)
Canto (another that my neighbor likes)
People Gotta Move
Alive By Science
Brother to Brother
Hurts to Be in Love
Persona Non Grata
Black Cars
Wheels of Life
first encore: I Just Wanna Stop (another my neighbor likes)
second encore: People Gotta Move
Of course ALL of them are my favorites--and then some!

During the concert when various musicians did solos, in particular the flutist, sax player and David Goldblatt, my daughter turned and said to me "Mom, do you know how hard it is to do that? These guys are great!" She was very impressed with the talent of the musicians. All of the music was great. (I've tried to raise my kids to appreciate good music!!!) Everyone on stage seemed to be enjoying themselves and there were a lot of smiles all around. I guess people up front were requesting older material. Where I was sitting, a lot of people had been talking about Canto and were hoping for more material from that CD, especially "Parole Per Mio Padre." Gino was talking during the concert but, as he is soft spoken, we couldn't hear much of what he said, just some of the story about when he met the late Pope.( I was hoping to hear how he met his wife. I find the stories of how spouses meet interesting.)

The concert was magical but it seemed like it ended too soon.

We waited outside the theater for I think close to an hour. Gino came out and shook hands with the fans that were there. I know he shook my hand but it was so fast I really don't remember it. I know I barely had time to say "hi." But I know he shook my hand!

I am so glad I finally got to see him perform in person. Gino is mesmerizing and he surrounds himself with great musicians. His voice melts your soul like the finest chocolate melts in your mouth and his talent is powerful enough to breach boundaries and touch many people. It is an amazing musical journey he is taking his fans on and I look forward to his new CD and hope he will continue to perform.
Ramona. Here are a few of Ramona's pictures (4) and after this the memory of this Detroit web page is full and used and we go on to Syracuse....

Hello Barend & Trees:
I have another story for you. Leaving rehearsal we walked past the box offfice and I was stopped as I previously told you. After getting my tickets, me and Ken were stopped by a black man around our age who said Frank Malfitano had told him he had left tickets for him but he didn't have his phone# or anything. They didn't have his tickets or note or anything at the office. He wanted to know if we could talk to Frank or get him some tickets. I knew Frank had left, so I told him to give me his number and I would call later if I found something. We walked over to Greektown for dinner and I ran into the bakery to buy Gino cookies before the show. When I came out, Gene (the fellows name) was standing outside, sort of, he was pretty loaded. He was wearing the same shorts, t-shirt, etc. We started laughing and asked if he had any luck. He said "yes, you won't believe this. I was walking past the stage door after you left and Gino came out. I told him I was a fan from way back and I had his Pauper in Paradise album and could he get me a ticket. Gino said sure pick them up at the box office later. Then I told him I only had the clothes I was wearing and he said that was fine to come in them." We said that's great, see you at the show.

You can imagine how surprised we were when we were in our seats and Gene came and sat down with a friend (looked like a drinking buddy from the street) two rows in front of us. He had better seats than us!!!!

What a guy that Gino! What a weekend. We laughed for three days.

When I got to work this morning there was a message to call DJ, I haven't done so yet, I can't imagine what he wants. Probably to quit stalking Gino! But he did email me this morning too and said how nice it was to meet me and Ken and gave me info on the Montreal show. What a nice person.
Have a great evening. Terry. Ohhhhh noooooo Terry we forgot your picture with Gino, here it is in an enlarged format when you click here!!!

An e-mail from Angie Mills in the USA, dated 26 May 2005. With the subject : Gino Vannelli fan

Hello Barend & Trees:
E-mailing you back to let you know how much we enjoyed Gino Vannelli on Saturday in Detroit. It was so exciting to see him after so many years. The theatre was filled with many excited people. He sounded wonderful and looks fantastic. The years have been kind to him. I had so much emotion when he first appeared on stage that my eyes filled with tears of excitement. All the memories of that voice and stage presence came back to me. The memory of how he knows every note being played and that he is truly conducting his musicians. He sang Canto towards the end of the show and his Italian was as clear in person as it is on the CD.

We also waited after the concert to see if we could meet him. We waited 30 - 40 minutes and he did appear from the theatre side door and we were able to shake his hand! What a dream come true! I was absolutely thrilled. It was a quick visit and he didn't sign anything outside, but I saw him up close. We were also told that they were discussing the ability to bring Gino to Detroit again for the Detroit Jazz Festival. This would be great! It is too many years between his visits to Detroit. While I saw Gino in a small bar in a Detroit suburb 14 years ago, it has been 27 years since he played to a sold out show at Detroit Cobo Arena. I was there in the 10th row. I have been a Gino fan for over 30 years. . . back to my teenage years!

And Yes you are correct. I do work for Pepsi-Cola. . . in Michigan. I didn't know there was a Pepsi stage in Holland. Keep up the good work bringing news of Gino to all of his fans. Thanks for the links to photos of Gino. Living near Ontario, Canada gives me some information about Gino, but now you will be my main source. Stay Well! Regards, Angie Mills

Hey you two....
The show went really well and it was so fun to play with Gino again!
I came directly from Australia where I was playing on tour with a singer named Madeleine Peyroux. That was fun too, but no comparison to working with Gino. I had very little sleep for several days but managed to function well enough. I'm so glad to be home now with the family and recharge. I really look forward to seeing your shining faces very soon. I hope you are both doing very well. Love and Light, David

An e-mail from Judy R. in Chicago in the USA dated 25 May 2005. With the subject : First concert experience in Detroit!!

Dear Barend and Trees,
Judy from Chicago here!!

How do I convey, in words, my first concert experience with Gino Vannelli?? Words can sometimes seem inadequate however I will attempt it.

EXQUISITELY AWESOME!! GLOWING WITH WARMTH!!!!

Someone should have told me that I would be mesmerized !!! The band and accompanying string quartet were Superb. That kind of resonance between Gino and his band mates can only be described in one way,GREATNESS LOVES COMPANY !" I am so deeply inspired by this man in so many ways.

It is a rare occurrence to have an audience give a standing ovation on only the fifth selection into a performance. It is the first time that I have ever experienced such a thing. It was well deserved to say the least. I arrived at the concert about 20 minutes early and I particularly noticed the energy in the room. The sense anticipation and excitement in the room was palpable. I was so thrilled to be in the presence of these people and Gino in concert. My expectation was that the concert would have been longer (about 2 hours) but it was not to be. I am just trusting that Gino knows what he is doing and he decided that 1 hour and 10 minutes was long enough.

In truth, it left me hungry for more of GINO in CONCERT. So....I am planning my Montreal trip to LaSalle and Shawinigan to see him in concert there. I have some vacation time to use and it will be my birthday too. YIPPPPPEEE!!!

What a truly memorable, magical and mesmerizing night!! He is DAMN FINE to look at too !!! My 24 year old son enjoyed the performance as well. He even said that he would like to go to another Gino concert So here we have another generation of Gino Vannelli fans in the making!

I AM UNRESERVEDLY, UNASHAMEDLY, AND IRREVOCABLY A GINO VANNELLI FAN , NOW AND FOREVER MORE !!!!!!

Much Love and Appreciation to you both!! Au Revoir! Judy in Chicago

P.S. Gino briefly mentioned the passing of his father as he was preparing to sing "Canto." I understand that the death of a family member can be a very private matter. I found myself wanting to say out loud to Gino that his father would BE and IS VERY PROUD OF HIM RIGHT NOW. My hope is that these words do not offend the Vannelli family. Pleas forgive me if they do.
Radiance and Light, Judy.

Dear Barend & Trees! Glad to hear about the Detroit photo's. The concert was an incredible success. Gino and the group had several deserving standing ovations. The crowd was really involved and were screaming out I love you all night long. They want us to return for multiple days next year. Gino could not be in a better frame of mind and body. You have a lot of people over here who are in touch with you and think so much of the both of you. DJ

An e-mail from Jim of the Bellavia Family in chicago, USA dated 24 May 2005. With the subject : GINO IN DETROIT

HI GUYS,
JUST WRITING TO LET YOU KNOW HOW THE CONCERT WENT SATURDAY NIGHT IN DETROIT. MY WIFE AND I FLEW IN FROM CHICAGO SATURDAY MORNING AND HEADED DIRECTLY TO THE MUSIC HALL TO SEE IF WE CAN SEE GINO ARRIVE. AFTER WAITING AN HOUR OR TWO, WE DECIDED TO GRAB AN EARLY DINNER AND RETURN TO THE HALL. NO LUCK IN FINDING GINO ALL DAY. THE DOORS OPENED AT 7:30 AND THERE WERE MANY GINO FANS WAITING ANXIOUSLY INSIDE. AT THE LAST MINUTE BEFORE WE WERE ABLE TO TAKE OUR SEATS, MY WIFE BOUGHT ME THE BEST OF GINO MILLENNIUM CD.

WE TOOK OUR SEATS IN THE 10th ROW MAIN FLOOR AND WAITED. I KNEW AS SOON AS I SEEN THE DRUM SET ON STAGE THAT EVERYONE WOULD BE IN FOR A REAL TREAT. THE ANTICIPATION WAS MORE THAN I COULD HANDLE. I HAVEN'T SEEN GINO PERFORM SINCE 1978 IN CHICAGO WHEN HE WAS PULLED OFF THE STAGE BY SCREAMING FANS. IT WASN'T TILL ABOUT 8:15 BEFORE THE MASTER TOOK CENTER STAGE.

HE OPENED WITH "WILD HORSES" AND HIS VOICE SOUNDED SMOOTHER THAN I COULD HAVE IMAGINED. HE CONTINUED PLAYING THAT EVENING WITH MANY OF HIS HITS FROM THE 70's AND 80's. MOST OF THE SONGS HE PLAYED HAD A NEWER JAZZ SOUND TO THEM AND WERE A REAL PLEASURE TO LISTEN TO, "I JUST WANNA STOP" AND "PEOPLE GOTTA MOVE" TO NAME A FEW. AFTER EACH SONG, PEOPLE WERE YELLING OUT SONGS THAT THEY WANTED TO HERE AND MOST OF THEM WERE OLDER HITS. I BELIEVE GINO NEW WHAT THE CROWD WANTED TO HEAR SO HE IMMEDIATELY HAD THE BAND PLAY "BROTHER TO BROTHER" IT WAS UNBELIEVABLE, GINO BELTED IT OUT AND ABSOLUTELY ROCKED THE HOUSE. THE ONLY THING I WOULD HAVE CHANGED THAT NIGHT WAS THE LENGTH OF THE SHOW, IT LASTED FOR A LITTLE OVER AN HOUR. LITTLE DID I KNOW THAT THE BEST WAS YET TO COME.

AFTER THE SHOW MANY PEOPLE WERE LEAVING BUT MY WIFE KAREN AND I DECIDED TO STICK AROUND FOR A LITTLE BIT TO MAYBE GET THE CHANCE TO MEET GINO. WE WALKED UP TO THE EMPTY STAGE AND JUST THEN A STAGE HAND CAME OUT AND STARTED TALKING TO THOSE OF US WHO STAYED BEHIND. SEVERAL PEOPLE WERE HANDING HIM PHOTO'S AND OLD ALBUM COVERS FOR GINO TO SIGN. I COULDN'T BELIEVE MY EYES WHEN HE TOOK MY CD FROM MY WIFE AND SAID "I'LL SEE IF I CAN GET GINO TO SIGN IT" AT THAT POINT I KNEW THAT NOBODY COULD MAKE US LEAVE YET. ABOUT 10 MINUTES LATER HE RETURNED WITH EVERYONE'S ITEM SIGNED, WE WERE ALL VERY EXCITED. I SLOWLY MADE MY WAY TOWARD THE EXIT AND TURNED BACK TO LOOK AT THE STAGE ONE MORE TIME AND COULDN'T BELIEVE IT WHEN GINO CAME OUT TO TAKE SOME PHOTO'S WITH SOME PEOPLE THAT WERE ALREADY ON STAGE. NATURALLY I WENT AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE TO JUST GET A LOOK AT HIM. JUST THEN HE SEEN OUR GROUP OF ABOUT 15 FANS STANDING THERE AND HE DECIDED TO COME AND MEET WITH ALL OF US TOO. I WAS ABSOLUTELY FLOORED AS HE WAS APPROACHING US. I WAS ALSO VERY UPSET THAT OF ALL THINGS I BROUGHT WITH ME TO THE SHOW, A CAMERA WAS NOT ONE. I STILL HAD THE PRIVILEGE TO SHAKE HIS HAND A TALK WITH HIM FOR ABOUT 5 OR 6 MINUTES. BUT WAIT, WHAT THIS, A COUPLE BEHIND US FROM ILLINOIS WITH A CAMERA? THEY WERE KIND ENOUGH TO TAKE A PICTURE WITH GINO AND MYSELF AND HAD E-MAILED IT TO ME THE NEXT DAY ALONG WITH 6 OR 7 OTHER PHOTO'S FROM THE CONCERT. I WILL BE FOREVER GRATEFUL TO THEM FOR CAPTURING THAT ONCE IN A LIFETIME MOMENT FOR ME ON FILM.

I ALSO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO TALK WITH DAVID GOLDBLATT ABOUT HIS PIANO PLAYING AND HIS OLD HOME TOWN OF BUFFALO GROVE, ILLINOIS. AFTER LEAVING THE HALL, MY CONVERSATION WITH GINO WENT THROUGH MY HEAD MANY TIMES. I JUST WANT TO SUM IT ALL UP BY SAYING THAT EVEN THOUGH GINO IS A PERFORMER THAT CAN FILL A HALL WITH HIS MUSIC AND HIS POWERFUL VOICE, HE IS ALSO A SOFT SPOKEN COMPASSIONATE HUMAN BEING THAT REALLY ENJOYED BEING INVOLVED WITH HIS TRUE FANS. NOT ONE TIME DURING HIS AUTOGRAPH AND PHOTO SESSION DID HE MAKE ME FEEL RUSHED OR IN A HURRY TO LEAVE. The Bellavia Family.

An e-mail from Terry in Pittsburgh, USA dated 23 May 2005. And guess what ??? 20 pictures attached !!! The subject : MOTOWN MANIA!!!!!!!!

WOW!!!!!!!
Gino and every single member of the band were fantastic. The crowd was fabulous as well! They were revved from the start, shouting Gino's name throughout the show. It was an interesting mix, but I don't think many have been fortunate enough to see him perform, since the 70's and weren't even aware of his later releases of Slow Love, Yonder Tree or Canto. Most of the people around me were screaming for Gino to sing Momma Coco and were still moaning when they left. But he made the crazy when he sang Brother to Brother, People Gotta Move, Wheels of Life and of course I Just Wanna Stop. The important thing is that they'll check out Gino's newer music.

Some of the songs that we heard In Lewiston and Kincardine were reworked a little again, probably because Frankie wasn't in Lewiston and Natalie wasn't in Kincardine. But the changes were just another example of Gino's versatility.

Frank Malfitano chose the perfect venue for Gino's Detroit comeback. The theatre was beautiful and intimate. I spoke to Frank earlier in the day and he's very excited about the Syracuse Jazzfest. Word should be spreading fast!!!!

An e-mail from Cyndi Haskins in Pittsburgh, PA, USA dated 23 May 2005 with the subject : corrections to detroit show reviews, please use this one instead of first one, thanks!!

Dear Barend and Trees,
Well, just got back this morning from another memorable Gino trip!! Judy and I had to take an early flight back to Pittsburgh this morning due to limited seating....... so I feel as if my head is still in the clouds somewhere between Detroit and Pittsburgh or I just woke up from a great dream!! It's hard to summarize all the events that just took place less than 24 hours ago.

It all went much too quickly but I was so fortunate and as one long time listener and first time concert attendee put it, "it was an honor" to be at the show to witness Gino make history again in the city of Detroit. Although I was hoping for some new music from Gino last night, the arrangements of the most well recognized songs from past decades had to have taken his fans who haven't heard him in years by total surprise. You can bet they left with a revived state of mind!!! I still get teary eyed every time he starts singing Living Inside Myself. Gino just has a way of restoring those who admire him with each song that he sings no matter how many times you hear it. LOL!! What can I say, I love going and listening again and again........ Life is just too short not to enjoy the, "shameless devotion", as both of you well put it.

I commend the band last night....... they were playing with so much enthusiasm and each one of the guys and Natalie are just so incredibly gifted. David had just gotten back from Australia and was there for practice and the show!!! Go piano man!!!!!! No wonder Gino continues to have the best of the Canadian musicians, including our wonderful Mr. Goldblatt from California. As you know, I love to watch others react to Gino and listen to the comments. After the show I asked several people what they thought and they remarked, Gino" is the best and how long they have been fans and how much they love his music". Some said it wasn't long enough and as always you hear comments about other songs that they wish he would have done. One woman said, "Gino looks gooo-od"!!! I told them about the websites and the cd's being sold out front. I even overheard a woman telling several other women about Canto and how Gino wrote the song for his father and how different the music was. Then I said, " it's for sale in the lobby"!!

Other than the show itself, I have to say thanks to D.J. for a very touching conversation that we had prior to the show. He totally confirmed the love and passion he has for Gino and his music. I think we understand each other very well..........Gino is blessed to have him as his manager. He did give subtle hints that there will be new music before next year and new tour dates!!! We will all just have to wait until it is released. How exciting and in the mean time, there is Syracuse, Canada and Europe for those able to attend. Judy and I spent time with Deb Davis and Arlene, better known to some as Mama Coco after the show. It was a pleasure getting to know Deb in person!!! What a great personality!! We shared stories about the previous shows that we had attended. Thank you Gino for your gift and love of song and music and an extra thanks to everyone in the band!!!! Love, Cyndi from Pittsburgh

An e-mail from Anita Bakker- Dijkers in Michigan, USA dated 22 May 2005 with the subject : Re: gino in concert in detroit

And so what have you been doing these the last 25 years?".

English : I just checked your website and was surprised about the fast reactions after the concert. And of course I was as surprised about all the hard and dedicated work you've already put into updating your site with these mails and pictures. After I read Kathy's report on the concert I decided you really don't need my story. I couldn't have done a better job.The Detroit Music Hall is a great theater with a very cozy atmosphere. It feels like you're part of one big family gathering. The management is not as strict as in most theaters, for here we were allowed to carry our drinks to our seats and there were no restrictions for shooting pictures. For us ( Emile and I) it was obvious the Detroit crowd was hungry for Gino's older songs. Not too many people seemed to be up to date with his newer repertoire. Mmmmm , too bad. We've only heard him sing the the title song Canto. To be honest: we had been hoping for some more.. "People gotta move" had the crowd out of their chairs , which evoked Gino's reaction: And so what have you been doing these last 25 years?!.

An e-mail from Kathleen, USA dated 22 May 2005 with the subject : Gino Vannelli Detroit 05/05/21

Hi Barend and Trees,
I couldn't wait to tell you all about Gino's concert in Detroit last night!!!!!

Dave and I arrived at the Music Hall just before 8 pm following an exquisite dinner at a 36th-floor Renaissance Center restaurant overlooking the Detroit River and Belle Isle. We took our seats in the 3rd row left center and talked with one couple who drove from Traverse City, Michigan to fulfill a 20-year dream of seeing Gino Vannelli live in concert and a woman who has seen Gino so many times she’s lost count. This was my fourth Gino Vannelli concert and Dave’s third GV concert.

After an introduction by Frank Malfitano who noted that it had been 25 years since Gino’s last appearance in Detroit and thanked us for another sold-out show, Gino hit the stage about 8:10, starting with “Wild Horses” and “Living Inside Myself,” the same two opening songs as last summer’s concert in Kincardine. Backed by his handpicked band (David Goldblatt, piano; Mark Kelso, drums; Alain Caron, bass; Francois D'amour, saxophone and flute; Don Meunier, guitar; and Marco Tessier, keys), he was also accompanied by a 5-piece string section!

Gino’s Detroit appearance was billed as “Seductively Smooth Jazz” in the Music Hall’s Legends of Pop Series so it was no surprise when Gino sang a slow jazzy version of my all-time favorite “The Wheels of Life” followed by a similar rendition of “Black Cars” featuring some terrific sax and bass work. Then, from his Slow Love album, “Alive by Science” which was followed by “Canto” featuring a piano introduction by David Goldblatt.

It was about 80 degrees in Detroit on Saturday, and it was hot in the Hall!! The concert continued with “Persona-Non-Grata” and a superb slow jazz rendition of “It Hurts To Be In Love” with a piano interlude. Then came “People Gotta Move” which certainly brought many to their feet as Mark Kelso banged out the familiar opening bars!!

Finally, there was “Brother to Brother” with Gino’s voice in superb shape as he hit those high notes!! After ten songs, Gino waved good night to the audience and left the stage.

He returned to perform a jazzy version of “I Just Wanna Stop” encouraging the audience to sing the chorus with him. And again he left the stage amid much applause, whistles, and shouts. He returned for one last reprise of “People Gotta Move.” And the concert came to a close after 90 minutes of Gino heaven!!!

It really was an awesome concert. Gino looked great, and talked with the audience, reacting to many shouts of “We love you, Gino” and for particular songs like “Storm at Sunup” among others. He told stories about living in Los Angeles…about recording the Pauper in Paradise album and almost getting kicked off his record label…about being invited to the Vatican to sing “Parole Per Mi Padre” and his family’s personal visit with Pope John Paul II. My favorite quote from the concert, in response to an audience request was “Italians take a while to warm up”!!!

Afterwards, we waited for Gino at the stage door. We watched as people were admitted backstage for what was said to be an afterglow party upstairs. These were probably Music Hall concert board members and longtime concert subscribers. Frank Malfitano came by and said that Gino would be out shortly. We waited and talked with other fans and shared stories of past Gino concerts. Gino has appeared three times in Detroit (1976, 1979, and now 2005) and I’ve attended all three shows!! Others have traveled to far away places to see him, while still others never had the pleasure until this concert!!

A small crowd of perhaps 30 or 40 people had gathered at the stage door. Finally a gentleman came out and indicated that we would at last Gino was coming out and would sign autographs and pose for pictures. The man at the head of the line got his photo taken with Gino and almost immediately we were then told that there was no time for autographs or photos and so Gino went quickly through the crowd and down the line shaking hands. I think I got to shake his hand…I don’t even know. But there was no time to say much or pass along greetings from Barend and Trees. Although it was thrilling to see Gino up close and personal, it still was disappointing that there was no time for a more personal moment with Gino.

Nonetheless I’m still basking in the concert afterglow. The music and scenes from the stage are still running through my mind as I write this about 10 hours later….It was a terrific show!!!

Laat mij even weten. Hier alvast wat plaatjes, daar ik het vermoeden heb dat jullie die wel erg graag willen zien...
Een prettig weekend. Anita Bakker-Dijkers, Michigan, USA.

Hi Barend and Trees,

We just got back from a short trip out of town... to Sunfest, a music festival in London, Ontario, Canada, and two days by the water. I'm looking forward to seeing your updates on the website soon.

Re: the Gino interview... I scanned only the top half of the article to get the headline... and then I typed up the whole text of the interview. You should have received the photo scan and the Word document with the text.
(And soon I hope to get a package including the real newspaper interview into the mail for you.)

“A candid conversation with Gino Vannelli”

by David G. Watkins

Song stylist Gino Vannelli, one of the most innovative and intriguing artists of our time, is a perfectionist, breaking all the rules to journey to the heart and soul of musical inspiration. Part philosopher, part musician, part composer, and part poet, he continues to bring these talents together in his music.

I had an opportunity to speak with this amazing artist. (Editor’s note: Vannelli is best known by Michigan Chronicle readers for his Top 30 R&B/Top 10 pop hit “I Just Wanna Stop.”)

D.W.: How would you classify your style of music?

Vannelli: Well, it depends on the album. The last album I did made a classical type statement, (with) a full orchestra. This new album that I’m working on is an all-out pop album. My taste tends to run from jazz to pop and from R&B to classical. I sort of like to mix-and-match.

D.W.: I understand that Herb Alpert discovered you. Let’s talk a little about that.

Vannelli: Yes, that was a long time ago. That was when I signed with A&M records. I grabbed him by the shirt collar and told him I wanted him to sign me! (Laughing). So we became friends after that, and he produced the first album. (“Crazy Life,” in 1973.) D.W.: What was the inspiration behind the 1978 hit “Brother to Brother”? Vannelli: I had written a classical piece for the Royal Philharmonic, and it was recorded in London (England). The album did well, but not so well, so my brothers (Joe and Ross) and I sat down and decided that we needed a more successful album that was a little more mainstream. There was a song that came around that I actually wanted to record with a symphony orchestra called “Brother to Brother” and it was in a little bit of a different form, so I changed the form to more a jazz-fusion, R&B kinda groove. It worked so well that I decided to call the album that.

D.W.: You were one of the first artists to work with keyboard synthesizers, what impact did that form of musical technology have on the jazz industry at that time?

Vannelli: I think it had an impact in the sense that Joe (Vannelli) and I were the first to employ keyboard synthesizers in which you could only play one note at a time. So what Joe and I would do is stack up one-note-at-a-time synthesizers into either a string section or a brass section and tell people that when it was recorded. When companies like Korg, Moog, and a few others saw that we were two of the guys using it, they approached us and asked if we would like to endorse the new polyphonic technology. If it hadn’t been Joe and I, it would have been someone else. But we were right there.

D.W.: A lot of artists do a lot of creative things in the studio that they cannot do in a live performance. How do you feel about that?

Vannelli: Maybe you can’t reproduce exactly what you have in the studio. I mean, you have your twenty vocal stacks or whatever it is to create that sound, but you can certainly create something live that has the full impact, and in some ways, it can be different or better because you have the spontaneity of the live performance.

When I sing in the studio, I go through a period of getting to know the song, so I’ll go through take upon take upon take until I really understand the song, and then I’ll just sleep on it and record it in two or three takes and that’s it. That’s the way I like to work.

D.W.: Your dad was a professional singer. How much of an influence was he on you and your brothers?

Vannelli: He was a tremendous influence. The main part of his influence was what he had introduced us to. He was not only a classical buff, he was also a big band and a jazz buff. He also really liked Brazilian, Latino and salsa music. He opened up a lot of doors.

D.W.: What new projects are in the works?

Vannelli: The project that I’m working on now is an album for Universal Records and it’s going to be eight or ten hits from the past along with four, maybe five brand new songs. It’s been a real challenge to go back to the mainstream and make the statement that I really want to make.

D.W.: I’m going to throw out a term and you tell me the first thing that pops into your head.

Vannelli: OK.

D.W.: Smooth jazz.

Vannelli: (Laughing) Shall we pick some lilies for the graveyard? Really, it’s a much overused term. A much better term is “cool jazz.” I never really did like the fact that it bumps jazz into this one sound where the sax player and a funk beat had to play together and that was it.

The “birth of cool,” as Miles Davis had rigged it up, should be broad, wide, and it should be an attitude. When something is cool or smooth, it’s more than an instrument, it’s more than a sound, its [sic] more than a look that makes them cool or smooth. I think it’s more than one sound or more than one recording technique.

D.W.: It’s like they (the recording industry) took some kind of poll or something and found out that the saxophone was an appealing instrument.

Vannelli: It is, but what happens is people hear that sound on the radio and want to copy it. Basically it’s regurgitated music and that’s why the same music is being played over and over again. That’s why it (smooth jazz) has lost a tremendous amount of popularity.

D.W.: Is Detroit one of your favorite places to play?

Vannelli:The last concert I played in Detroit was probably in 1979. I have a really interesting band coming. It’s a 60s band, my old band that I travel with plus a string section, so we’re going to have about eleven people on stage. Quite an entourage and we’re really looking forward to playing in Detroit.

Hi B&T!!!

Ginette from LaSalle, sent me a couple of posters that Gino's management had provided to them for this concert... don't know what the City of LaSalle will have for the entire day's events, but this is the photo they will be using for any advertisements I guess!

So feel free to use it on the tour info/prefun if you choose!!! Roll on June 30th and July 1st, my ears are more than ready for Gino's divine music! Gail Kansas City

Berend & Trees--
Thank you for the reply. I am getting more excited for Saturday's Gino show as the days get closer. I remember from past shows that Gino is actually kind of shy when he speaks to his audiences. I always thought it amazing that he can perform on stage so brilliantly in front of an audience then speak so soft and shy.

The Detroit Music Hall is an intimate theater and the opportunity may arise for a chance meeting with Gino. If I can get a signature, hello or handshake from Gino, it will truly be a "Once in a lifetime experience". I understood your English perfectly. . . Thank you. . . bye! Hello! Barend & Trees,
Thanks for all the tour info. The summer of 2005 is certain to be very hot and filled with wonderful sounds from GINO! I am looking forward to seeing him perform at the Syracuse Jazz Festival in June. My sister Cathy and Julie will be going to Syracuse for the show.

Of course one time is never enough so I will be traveling to Canada for the two shows in Shawinigan and LaSalle. Wish I could come to Denmark and Holland for the shows but that is not possible. I am so looking forward to the new album!!! Take care, Mary Lou,

Hi B&T...
I talked with Ginette C. (she works for the City of LaSalle) today about the concert in LaSalle... it's another park event and they are expecting huge crowds as there will be events in the park all day... a young French singer, Rachelle (not sure name is right!) will appear first and Gino will be on stage about 9:15... there will be a short fireworks display during the concert's intermission, then Gino will finish his concert.. sounds great, huh?

I received my copy of Haitek Haiku about a month ago, and Gino's singing of "See the World as a Plum" is great! Cant' wait to hear his new CD, hopefully soon!!

We've got our flights booked, hotel reservations made so we are READY for these concerts! The end of June can't get here fast enough. Hope you are having sunny days in your part of the Netherlands! Gail, KS, USA dated 20 May 2005.

I went on-line and ordered tickets the very first day they were available and will be sitting in row 11. It's been maybe 13 - 15 years since he has been here.

Keep up the good work informing Gino fans all over the world about Gino! We are out there and need to let Gino know how much his talent is loved and respected. Regards,

Hi Barend and Trees, How are you ? Already busy with the preparation of Gino's arrival ? Many, many thanks for your
e-mail about Gino's concert. That was very kind and thoughtful of you. Otherwise we should have been too late for tickets ofcourse. We immediately ordered 3 tickets ( 2 for us both and 1 for a friend ) and we already received them for the concert on the 7th of July in Amsterdam. It should be fun, if you have the time (and feel like it ofcourse) that we shake hands and meet in person somewhere around the concert. How exciting to see Gino again with a band in stead of an orchestra. We have to miss the enthusiasm of Dick Bakker though. And maybe Helga can get a bottle of the water again from Gino!! Again our thanks and maybe till the 7th of July. Greetings, Jan and Helga.

Hallo Trees en Barend,
Wij, een groepje bloedfanatieke Gino fans, gaan natuurlijk in juli naar hem kijken en luisteren. Hello Trees and Barend,
We, a very fanatical little group of Gino Fans, go, see, watch and listen to Him in July OFCOURSE. Our feelings say that there is a very big chance that the North Sea Jazz organisation catched or trapped Gino for Saterday 9 July or Sunday 10 July. Do you two know something about that? Hartelijke groeten, Cobi Oosterlee, 24 April 2005.

I assume that you two already have tickets in your home for the 2 concerts? Maybe you know already what to expect. The tickets are free so no reserved seats, do you really think we have to stand? Lately I was on your site again and read about the first performance in Copenhagen, where Gino sang songs from His CANTO album for the very first time ever. Is there a DVD released from that performance? And if so I assume that this dvd is only for sale in Denmark? Kind regards, Cobi Oosterlee, 24 April 2005.

Hi Barend & Trees,
Thanks so much for the Gino Tour information! I keep hoping he'll come to my neck of the woods, but so far I don't see anything. I guess worst case scenario I'll have to fly somewhere to see him.

I guess he's not doing the big tour thing anymore, where he hits several cities? - looks like the concerts are pretty spread out and are big events. Do you think he'll be adding any more dates to this?

I hope you two are doing great - I'm doing very well (and still have my job thank God)! The weather here is unseasonably warm, but it's nice, so we're enjoying it after a very long winter!
Take care, Janice

An E-mail from Ramona in the USA !!! With the subject : RE: ......

was sitting here doing my billing (for work) and had KIXXNET (an internet streaming audio station out of Montreal, Canada) on and they just played Gino Vannelli 's "Wild Horses." That's my daughter's favorite song by him and since she was studying in her bedroom I just had to crank the volume up so she could hear it. All I could think about was that we will get to hear that magnificent voice in person very soon!! I haven't been to a concert in almost 20 years so you know I'm really looking forward to this. This has been a good day so far and now it's better!! Hope you both are having a great day, too.

An E-mail from Cyndi in Pittsburgh, USA !!! With the subject : RE: concerts

Thanks for sending the info on the fest, I had forgotten that the new schedule was to be posted after the 15th. My husband is excited that Bela Fleck is playing on Friday!! He loves his music like I love Gino's music. Have you ever heard of him? He is the most amazing banjo player!!!! Now I think we are going to drive over on Friday and go to that show as well. It is our 19th year anniversary so we will make it a special weekend!!
Both of you were in my dream last night????
Have a wonderful Gino weekend.

Jazz Fest highlights pop, rock and soul
Friday, April 15, 2005.
By Mark Bialczak, Staff writer.

Pop, rock and soul converge at Onondaga Community College for the M&T Syracuse Jazz Fest on June 24 to 26.

The jazz supergroups Trio! and Soulbop Band share the headlining slot at the OCC campus on Friday, June 24; pop vocalist Gino Vannelli headlines on Saturday, June 25; and soul legend Smokey Robinson closes the event on Sunday, June 26.

Festival executive director and founder Frank Malfitano announced the lineup of 33 national and Central New York professional bands and scholastic ensembles at a news conference Thursday morning in M&T Bank's South Salina Street branch in Syracuse.

"It's like riding the Himalayas on a bicycle," Malfitano told the crowd of about a 100 media members, jazz musicians and music fans about programming the three stages of music.

Acting in his other title as the festival's artistic director, Malfitano scaled the mountains by securing a lineup that meshes musical styles. The festival's official theme this year is "Jazz meets pop, rock and soul."

"We're not a pure (jazz) festival. I'll be the first to admit that," Malfitano said. "The music continues to evolve. All the art forms are connected, and we try to bring that out in the jazz festival. These artists have wide audience appeal. I'm thrilled about all of them."

Robinson is the Detroit native who helped shape the sound of Motown R & B and soul with his long string of hits, both with his group The Miracles and solo. A member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Robinson, 65, is equally respected for his singing and his songwriting.

Montreal native Vannelli had several pop hits in the 1970s and '80s, including "I Just Wanna Stop" and "Living Inside Myself," which both made the Top 10.

The Friday night lineup caters to pure jazz fans with the pair of supergroups that join together some of the best performers in jazz.
Trio! teams violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, banjo player Bela Fleck and bassist Stanley Clarke. All three have headlined past editions of the M&T Syracuse Jazz Festival individually.

The Soulbop Band combines the talents of trumpeter Randy Brecker, saxophonist Bill Evans, guitarist Hiram Bullock, bassist Victory Bailey, keyboardist Dave Kikowski and drummer Rodney Holmes. "Today is a bit of a celebration. You always have to set the bar high. There's always a chance of being taken for granted when you've been around a long time. You always have to go yourself one better," Malfitano said after the conference.

He will try to one-up himself for two more years. M&T Bank vice president of marketing Robin Toia announced that the bank has signed a contract to continue for two more years as fest title sponsor, which includes the event's 25th anniversary in 2007. Onondaga County Executive Nicholas Pirro also pledged the county's continued support.

Debbie Sydow, president of OCC, said the college is excited about hosting the event the next two years, too. The staging site this year will move because of a renovation project for the Gordon Student Center. The three stages will be placed in the paved parking lots east of the Whitney and Physical Education buildings. Workshops and clinics will be held inside Whitney.

It will be the third different campus site in five years at OCC. Sydow says the fest "has taught us to investigate better options. So, it's tweaking." Malfitano also announced that the fest will be dedicated to longtime music educator Carol Jacobe, who has led Baldwinsville's C.W. Baker High School Silk & Satin vocal jazz ensemble for a quarter century and who will retire this year, and to the staff of Syracuse radio station WAER-FM "Jazz 88," which has been a media sponsor of the festival since its origin.

The details :

THE LAST TIME I SEEN GINO WAS AROUND 1978 AT THE ARIE CROWNE THEATER WHEN HE WAS PULLED OFF STAGE BY SOME CRAZY FANS. I HOPE THAT DOES NOT STOP HIM FROM DOING ANOTHER CONCERT IN CHICAGO SOON. SEE YOU MAY 21st.

A new message from Gail in Kansas, USA, with the subject : Gino concert in Shawinigan Canada.

Hi B&T
Just wanted to tell you what I'd learned today when I called Jean Francois Charette, the president of the Festival d-ete de Shawinigan.... as we are planning on hearing Gino in Shawinigan and LaSalle, and have not been in that part of Canada before, he was kind enough to tell me a few things about the area and the concert.....

Concert is outdoors... gates will open at 6PM, they expect Gino to hit the stage about 8:45 PM that evening... this festival goes on for 6 days and Gino is the last evening. He advised me that Gino will do approximately a 90 minute concert, and he has a young girl that will sing two songs in French with him... I believe she is from Montreal... he did not give any other information...

They will rent chairs for seating or bring your own (hard to do when flying there!)... tickets will be 10.00 each at the gate...

He spoke English well but had some trouble with words and I speak minimal French, but he gave me as much info as he could at the time! As you can probably tell, I'm already planning ahead for these concerts!

You may post this on the prefun pages so everyone can read this info!

A message from Teresa in the North West of the USA, with the subject : Re: GV21032005-27 Gino Auction Bid !!!

Barend & Trees,
Thanks for letting me know about the bids! I should have stayed up till midnight, but I went to bed because I get up at 5:30 am for work. I was hoping no one else would bid, but that's the chance you take. It was still fun trying to acquire more Gino music!

I always check out your web pages to know what's going on with Gino. That's how I saw the info on the upcoming summer concerts, and I am so excited that he's doing these shows. I'm trying to get my two best friends (who both live in California) to fly to NY to see the Syracuse show with me. I hate to fly, but I will do it to see Gino!

I have to plead with Gino here: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, can you try to play at least one show on the west coast? You have many fans on this side of the country--and in the Pacific Northwest. Even Vancouver, BC, would be good!

Okay, take care, Barend and Trees. Keep up the great work with the web site. All of Gino's fans appreciate having this site to go to for the latest info!
Teresa

A message from our Gino Vannelli guestbook from Judy in Chicago, USA, with the subject : Detroit Tickets !!!

Hi, Judy from Chicago!
Just received my tickets to see Gino in Detroit on May 21st. I am so excited to actually experience his performance first hand. Does he actually read the mesages on the web-site from time to time? That is spectacular. All of the comments from his fans seem to really convey his warm and genuine regard for his audience. Wow, I am really impressed with that.

I will hold the picture that I can receive an autograph from him.
Be Well!
Judy Randle on 1 April 2005.

A second e-mail from Ramona in Michigan the USA, with the subject : Tickets !!!

Wow!!
I just went to your website re: the Gino Vannelli summer tour.
I sounds like a lot of people will be coming to the Detroit area!!!
You asked how purchasing the tickets went. I went to a local Ticketmaster outlet and got my tickets with no problem. I tried to get some online from the pre-sale but could not access them. I got a message saying they were not being sold online yet. So I went and got my tickets from the outlet.

I am now looking forward to this so much more. It's going to be a great concert and I'll be right in the middle of so many other devoted Gino Vannelli fans. I everyone making the trip will have a safe trip and have a wonderful time at the concert.

Anyway, as I said before, I hope all of the people going to the Detroit concert have SAFE TRIPS (including the local fans!!!!!!!) and also have a GREAT time. Knowing we'll be in the middle of so many devoted fans makes it even better. Take care and thanks.
Ramona, March 2005.

An e-mail from Ramona in Michigan the USA, with the subject : Tickets !!!

I've got 3 tickets (my daughter, my best friend and neighbor, and myself) on the main floor in the middle--not really close but not too far away either.

I am so excited. I know this is silly but I take the tickets out and look at them every 3 or 4 days because I can't believe I'm finally going to get to hear that magical voice. I'll have to stop looking at them though because I don't want to wear away the writing on them. We might not get in if they can't read the writing. LOL.

I don't know if I told you this before or not but in 1977-1980 I lived in Los Angeles, California and I wasn't too far from A&M studios where Gino recorded. I thought about going there and hanging around to see if I might see him come out and possibly get an autograph but I never did (I spent a lot of time at work actually). I guess it's a good thing I didn't because I he was touring the eastern half of the U.S and then maybe Europe or Japan or something. So having never been at the right place to see him perform in 33 years, I am really looking forward to this concert. My daughter is hoping he will sing "Wild Horses." She loves country songs and loves that particular song the he does. We'll see on May 21st!!!

My home is open to you if you decide to come to Detroit!! We should have lots of sunshine and good weather by then.

I'll try to get out and get that CD mailed this week. I've been so busy with the kids' activities that I didn't get to do my errands and I want to get it mailed before my boss goes on vacation (in May) and I have to fill in for her work-wise and before I have to start the yardwork and more painting in the house. (Guess I'm a workaholic--but hopefully in a good way.)

Take care. Thanks for writing. I love to here from you both. You sound so AWESOMELY nice and I would wonderful to meet you some day!!!

God bless you both!!! I'd love to send you some sunshine but it is chilly, grey and raining here too, but it is good for the grass and flowers. I planted tulip bulbs last year and I'm waiting for them to bloom. I'll think of you when they do (Holland still goes with beautiful tulips, right? and beautiful flowers are always good for the soul---just like great soul-touching music!)

An e-mail from Cyndi in the USA, with the subject : concerts

Hello Barend and Trees,
I read your website while vacationing in Florida and it just added to the sunshine that was there!! I was aware of the shows prior to going but reading the positive responses to GINO made my day. He is so loved by many and I am amazed at the fans who are resurrecting for the shows and some for the first time!!!

I am hoping to go to Syracuse, don't think I will be able to make it to Detroit although you know if I had my way I would be at all the shows!!!!!!!! Maybe new venues will be added before too long and I will get to go. Thanks again for keeping us well updated. I am well on my way to an exciting summer!!!!!!!
Love to both of you and Gino too!

An e-mail from Gail in Kansas, USA , with the subject : Better late than never......

Hi B&T,
and thanks for the information... Yes, I saw the Detroit concert info the day you posted it... unfortunately, we can't make that one due to family commitments (why is spring such a good time for weddings, etc?????) but we DO plan on going to the Montreal area for the ones in Shawinigen and also LaSalle...my husband knows where we'll be on that weekend and as long as we're in the area, we'll hit both of them. So I'm hoping they both occur... I'll keep watching for confirmation on those two. I'm sure the one in Detroit will be wonderful... I can just hear some of the great songs off of Yonder Tree being done at the Music Hall. By the way, Yonder Tree was one of the older ones I didn't have until December... and I'd have to rate this one right up there with Canto -- if I was on an island with 3 CD's, it would be Canto, Yonder Tree and Live in Montreal... plus all the rest of Gino's I could sneak along! I'm sure you two are planning a trip to Canada or will you wait for him to be closer to home in the summer?
Your Kansas City connection....Gail

An e-mail from Ramona in Michigan, USA with the subject : Re: Barend and Trees and Gino Vannelli...

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THANK YOU ANGELS, BAREND AND TREES, FOR BRINGING ME GLAD TIDINGS OF GREAT JOY.
Seriously, I'm sitting here so absolutely delighted that after 33 years of listening to Gino Vannelli's magnificent voice on 8-track tapes, LPs and 45s, CDs and the two videos tapes I have I may finally get to see him perform live. How awesome.

I know that at least one of my daughters and I will be going. The venue is only about 30-45 minutes from our house. I've printed the map and tickets go on sale tomorrow. I'm going to check with a couple of my friends and see if they would like to go also, the more the merrier!!! And I haven't had a night out to do something I wanted to do in years. This will be so great. He'll never perform closer to where I live than Detroit. We live 2 miles outside of Detroit.

If you are by chance going to be in this area, you can stay at my house. We are all finally well again!!!!

It is almost midnight so I'll say goodnight and thank you once again. I just have to say one last thing: T there is a God because I've been praying for years!!!! and I never really thought Gino would perform in Detroit or even in Michigan, but since he is going to, this is proof that prayers get answered!!!!!!. By the time May gets here, I'll probably be covered with bruises from pinching myself to make sure I'm not imagining this good news.Your email has put me on cloud nine for the time being. Thank you for letting me know. You both are so wonderful. My daughter thanks you too.
Ramona, Michigan, USA. 15 March 2005.

An e-mail from Judy the USA with the subject : WOW!! What Great NEWS!!!

It's funny, cause I never dream about Gino, and I did a week or so ago.
I wanted to put a note on your web site, because it's just dawned on me that it was 10, ten, TEN years ago that we first started emailing, at the first Gino site. I had just come back from seeing Gino in Pittsburgh and Cleveland, and could have met Otmaro and Gino but was to chicken to try.

It's the wonderful things about life, it takes so long, it goes so fast... to think that we have been "computer friends" for 10 years... but it seems like it's only been a few minutes!!
This is a much needed diversion from my day-in, day-out life. Time to put my worries on hold, and go and have fun!!! And I will!
I don't have a connection on line in Pittsburgh, but have my laptop there (but no phone line). I will have to drag that laptop to work with me and plug in or go to the hotel where the other Dayton girls stay and use their internet connection!!
Thanks for the great news!!
Mush Love, Judy 13 March 2005.

An e-mail from Laura in the USA with the subject : Hi...

Hi there...I'm back!
The trip went well... the weather was terrible. But that didn't matter because we were busy with work all day long. Thanks for letting me know about Gino in NY! Syracuse is about a 4 hour drive from here.... not so bad. It would be so nice to go. I know the 2 Jamie's will be very excited when I tell them!!! It's snowing here again today -- and it's opening night for the high school play. I hope the weather clears up because that will deter many people from coming out. I hope you are both well -- and happy! Have a terrific weekend...hope to hear from you soon.

Hi B&T,
I just read your tour data for summer 2005.
Syracuse is closer than Lewiston! In fact, it is on the way. It looks like there is a Tuesday slot for July 5th....... perhaps another Lewiston show? July 4th is Independence Day, so I bet the place would be packed, even more than 2004 (if that is possible)! I'll be there! Until later,
