REACTIONS/COMMENTS:

A "few" words from the editors (B&T) dated Sunday 13 July 2008:

After days and days of rehearsals, changes, jokes, coffee and food, the musicians were ready to show the North Sea Jazz audience what they learned from the Master and how to play His music with their hearts.

The very first show with Gino Vannelli's DutchBeat band and again a night to remember and this was really literal in the middle of the night from 11.45pm till 1.20am a kind of torture for a singer and for Gino's voice on that time of the day. But like usual or we better write like always, Gino sang like never ever before and the goose-bumps and wet eyes were there already in the very first seconds... Bert van den Brink behind the Grand-Piano and Gino next to him on the little piano-bench, when Gino opened his mouth and throat His voice was like out of this world and with His white outfit there came a kind of glow from stage which made the whole show incredible impressive combined with Gino's voice this was the Gino Vannelli music-heaven again...

The whole GINO VANNELLI show was a work of art. The set up, the lights and the SOUND thanks to Ross Vannelli and all the guys who worked with Ross! We heard a few other concerts with the BIG names at the North Sea Jazz but everywhere the sound was AAARRRGGGHHHH!!!!!! Except for the GINO VANNELLI concert!!!! Believe it or not but the difference was amazing and the VANNELLI quality was in the Dutch air...

All men and women behind the show were amazing and worked like crazy to get it all ready in time so Gino could go on stage with good feelings...

We could feel it was so late at night the audience was not that wild as we are used to during Gino Vannelli concerts... So we (B&T) say to the organization of the North Sea Jazz: Again a wrong choice this year, Gino Vannelli needs to be the first act of the evening and not the last act in the middle of the night!!! This time was very wrong for the artist's voice and also for the audience who was too tired already! But in spite of everything GINO VANNELLI gave Himself for 200% and His voice was too good for words... The musicians played with their hearts for sure and made Rotterdam music-heaven for 90 minutes and Gino Vannelli's From This Day On was amazing and superb good!!! Also A Good Thing hit us deep in our hearts and sounded sooooooo GOOD. Of course Brother To Brother was the most recognizable Gino Vannelli song for the audience especially for the musicians in the audience. And for the non-musicians it was Hurts to Be In Love which they play a lot on the Dutch radio. The most
un-recognizable song for the general public was Wild Horses, that's what we heard around us...

GINO VANNELLI: The Man and His Music, a greatness in live performances with a divine voice and able to give His audience a magical concert which we will remember forever... This concert was big with many more musicians than last year and the production was much more in Vannelli style... Overwhelming and impressive with a sound that gives the ears a big musical treat. The pure notes from Gino Vannelli's voice made us feel proud of Him and made us smile for many hours and days.

GREAT MUSICIANS and GREAT DANCERS!!! Good looking performance during PEOPLE GOTTA MOVE of the two dancers... Great respect for the Drummer who had very little time to rehearse Gino Vannelli's music, Stephane had to drum instead of the Dutch drummer who had other gigs at the last moment. FANTASTIC STEPHANE!!!!!

When you need to say something or write something about Gino Vannelli's performance at the North Sea Jazz 2008 please do not hesitate to e-mail your words and you do not have to be a journalist to write something, follow your heart and follow your emotions and write them down. If you want we will post your words on this web page.

Gino’s stem was weer buitenaards goed

Gino was geweldig !!!!!!!

English/Engels: An e-mail from Wil Spelbos in Utrecht, the Netherlands dated Sunday 13 July 2008 with the subject: Gino at the North Sea Jazz

Hello Barend & Trees.
Saterday the 12th of July 2008…..what an experience Gino at the North Sea Jazz !!!!!

At last at the end of the evening after walking around between 24.000 people, (very cosy) it was time to go to the Amazone concert-hall where Gino and His DutchBeat band should perform... This time we had reserved seats but it was a pity we did not have first row seats like I am used too in the last couple of years or better said spoiled rotten with! This time I had a seat further away in the concert-hall and I had to peek between big heads of the people in front of me, but hey it does not matter, the most important thing is the Gino Vannelli performance !!

Just before the start of the concert everybody is still busy on stage to get the sound good and ready with the help of Gino's Brother Ross and to tune the musical instruments, also fun to see Ross Vannelli this time even from a distance.

And than it happens...the concert starts. Bert behind the piano plays the first tunes and Gino walks to him and they start with such a very beautiful song Somewhere West... Yes I know the title now and I will never ever forget it anymore !!!

After this song the other band members came on stage and they played new and old songs, sorry but I cannot remember the whole list of songs they played because I was just enjoying everything what happened and felt the music coming to me.

Gino's voice was alien good again (weird expression of me but I really do not know how to describe Gino's voice in a greater way)

It was so beautiful again, emotional and swinging and a joy till the end !!!!

Again a night to remember and completely different compared for example with the evening in Austerlitz, however I prefer the intimacy of such a small venue like Austerlitz.

Barend and Trees the best for you two from Utrecht and who knows we will see you again.

And Gino....thanks for your absolute awesome performance, it was fantastic !!!! We look forward to the new CD...and we hope for more performances in the Netherlands...It's so nice and cosy overhere, isn't it ???

Gino was phenomenal !!!!!!! well, it was a big pity that a could not make pictures from my seat, it was very difficult from that distance and the results are very distressing and make me sad. Herewith are 2 pictures which are still reasonable and I will e-mail a few seperately, probably you cannot do nothing with these pictures but it's always fun to see them......Love, Wil.

An e-mail from Donja in Capelle a/d IJssel, Holland dated 14 July 2008 with the subject: Gino at The North Sea Jazz Festival 2008

After a long time walking around an and seeing other great artists. It was finally Gino time! The hall was nice and cool. A real treatment after all those hot and sweaty halls. I was with my girlfriends husband John who is a singer too. (Carlos doesn’t like the big festivals)

And then Gino was there.... He looks great in his white suit. He started together with Bert on the piano with Somewhere West. It feels like coming home...those voice, incredible! From This Day On followed. It was a real joy!

Wild Horses has got a complete metamorphosis! Gino made a ballad of it and it sure sounds good, very good! I love the guitar sound in it. Black Cars was recognizable and great as ever. I Just Wanna Stop is always one of my favorites. Too bad, the audience didn’t sing along..... The audience was a little dull this evening. I hope it was just because they were tired. To be honest I was a little tired too.

But Gino gave himself for 200% so I feel the need to say “come on audience, wake up!” Canto was so good with Bert on the piano again. I was wondering; it seems like Gino’s voice gets stronger every time I hear him! How is it possible on his age and with his busy life and in the middle of the night! I think I will never know his secret....

The Dutch Beat sounded great! The band played fantastic. Gino held the ropes tight as always he is such a perfectionist! There was another version of Brother to Brother it sound a bit like in the old days. Awesome! A Good Thing was not only A Good Thing but A Extremely Good Thing!!! It Hurts To Be In Love was well known by the audience and was really sensitive. Last but not least People Gotta Move. The dancing part was this time for two dancers who came on the stage while Gino jumped behind the keyboards! And then it was over. A few people were leaving! I thought “oh no the encore!” Fortunately Gino came back and sung Don’t Give Up On Me and again People Gotta Move!

Here it really ended and we had to leave The Vannelli Music Heaven, so we walked out The Dutch Beat.... Gino, the man with the golden voice, was fabulous as ever and the band was fantastic too. I agree with Wil, I prefer also the little more intimate concerts too. But I wouldn’t have missed this one for the world! Thank you Gino for the wonderful late night concert!

Too bad, I didn’t see you two Barend and Trees, maybe the next time..... I hope there will be again some surprise concerts in Holland this year..... I keep my fingers crossed!
Love, Donja

Nederlands/Dutch: Een e-mail van Loek in Holland d.d. Maandag 21 Juli 2008 met het onderwerp: Gino at Northsea Jazz 2008

Hallo Barend & Trees,

Groeten, Loek

Hello Barend & Trees,
Last Saterday the 12th of July we could admire Gino again and it was really fantastic! I was in the concert-hall on time and had a seat on the 4th row.

Take the Canto song...goose-bumps! The only thing I think is a pity that he does not sing the old original version anymore of People Gotta move. Everytime it's a big surprise but I like the old-fashioned way the best. His voice was absolutely fantastic and in super shape! And we could clearly see that He did the best and tried very much to make the audience happy. And that's something you cannot say about all the artists at the NSJ.

Unfortunately I did not see you two, I looked around, (where you in the concert-hall or backstage?) So that picture with Gino will come another time. We look forward to the next time, but let us be satisfied because I calculated that I saw Gino already six times in a few years. Not Bad! Greetings, Loek

An e-mail from Ria in Holland dated Sunday 20 July 2008 with the subject: Gino

Hi, I like the sound of his voice...
Splendid and excellent voice...
I enjoyed the show very much and I will not start about his looks because when there is something in the newspapers it's always about His looks and sexsymbol etc... Never something good about this great music. Loved Bert van den Brink in this Gino Vannelli show. What a surprise CANTO !!! Amazing performance. THANKS GINO! We were all tired but we really loved your show... Ria a fan from the 70's who found you again!

An e-mail from Paul and Wilma in Holland dated Sunday 3 August 2008 with the subject: Had to think about Gino at the North Sea Jazz all the time...

Hi, I or better said WE try to write in English, we just came home from vacation and we left the Sunday after the North Sea Jazz and my, oh my, we talked, thinked and had such wonderful memories of Gino... We loved Gino at the North Sea Jazz and how special with Bert van den Brink. So beautiful....... We had to write something, we know it's late but you two always write better late than never. Gino made a huge impression on us both and we loved His voice and the great music!!!! WHAT A SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Barend and Trees thanks for your web site, so many photos to see and stories to read. FUN!!! P&W

A few lines from anonymous writers:

English/Engels: Anonymous writer 1:

Yesssssssss, thru my eyes Gino looked super great !!!!!!!!! With His white suit and the lights on stage He made a beautiful impression on me like a very handsome picture...... But hey I am not that objective anymore.........Let's hope that Gino will not forget the Netherlands in a long time and plan more concerts overhere
(Well, I keep on dreaming)

English/Engels: Anonymous writer 2:

It was a great show regardless of how hard the organizers try and screw it up each year!!!
(Time slot this year, too small venue last year.) Gino looked great in the "White Suit!!!!" Keeping his promise to his Mom, and always my favorite! Can't wait until the next show! What a summer.

English/Engels: Anonymous writer 3:

Gino looked fantastic in His white suit! I felt sorry for him though. I know He does not like to perform in the very late hours of the night. And than there is that dead sleepy audience. And those people who keep on walking during the show, I thought that was very annoying too. But hey, what can we do? I was tired too but as soon as I see and hear Gino I'm totally awake again! I deeply enjoyed this show. The person who was with me, enjoyed it all very much too and he was very impressed especially by CANTO! Well tomorrow it's Italy on the program and I hope the Italian audience is much more enthusiastic...

English/Engels: Anonymous writer 4:

Oh I made 2 pictures in a sneaky way but it was way too far! a big failure! I also made a paparazzi picture of a man wearing Gino's most favourite shirt! I thought this is too funny. The man thought I was totally crazy of course. He told me though that he also owns this shirt in black and in brown hahahahahaha. You can see the pictures underneath! Now the big question is: Who looks better in that shirt......? Difficult to choose isn't it... hahahahahahahahahahahahhahaha!!!

(2): A new video interview... The real but edited interview in Gino Vannelli's dressingroom at the North Sea Jazz 2008 in videoclip (1) you already saw a little part of this interview by Novum Sander jongkind. We will make a few links and we hope one of them works so you can see this videoclip anywhere on this planet... There is one comment to make.... (Personal opinion of the editors B&T) In all the news today, Saterday 9 August 2008, in Holland the media uses a very negative headline with big bold letters but Gino says it in a very different way in the interview... The Dutch media brings the Gino Vannelli interview in a negative way again! But see and hear for yourself when you watched the video... THE HEADLINES IN HOLLAND ARE:

  • GINO VANNELLI: "DUTCH PEOPLE ARE VERY RUDE."
  • GINO VANNELLI IS FINISHED (done) WITH THE 70's...
  • Gino Vannelli: 'Dutch People are blunt'

GINO VANNELLI THE DARLING OF THE PUBLIC!
GINO VANNELLI THE FAVOURITE OF THE NORTH SEA JAZZ AUDIENCES!

English/Engels: The voice central point at the North Sea Jazz

Into the swing of a reliable full program: big famous names, doubtful shady classics and unknown talents Published: 13 july 2008 11:07pm | Changed: 13 juli 2008 11:19pm | By Jacob Haagsma and Amanda Kuyper

The 33rd edition of the North Sea Jazz Festival was visited by 69.000 people. highlights: Rotterdam the 13th of July 2008. Traditionally crowd on this 33rd edition of the North Sea Jazz, the third one in Rotterdam. With more than 69.000 visitors over three days, an more than sold-out Saterday, an almost sold-out Friday and a more quiet Sunday it looks like new ticketsales records like in the old days in The Hague.

Also very traditional was the mix of big names, shady classics and still unknown undiscovered talent. The voice in music was central in this edition. So there were a big amount of singers but the kind of "darlings of the public". There were singing representatives from the mainstream- and avant-Garde jazz, pop, soul, blues and worldmusic so the limitations in styles were very smooth and open-minded choosen.

Old, famous and well-known came by, like a cold/cool Paul Simon who was very disappointing and choked up in a babbled concert with motives from Africa as a key... But souldiva Chaka Khan took her revenge on her loud voiced screaming jazz program of 2005 with a strong full of gospel setlist.

Just when we thought that Gino Vannelli shook off His slick image from the 80's, He shows Himself in this "DutchBeat" concert in a tight white suit, high black curly wealth of hair and black sun-glasses together with a collection of Dutch musicians. He sang 'I Just Wanna Stop' with His arms spread just like the sexsymbol from 20 years ago, exactly timing when the audience would melt. But especially His voice attracted people's attention: Richer, powerful and much more interesting than in the past. This was confirmed when He forgot about the old hits for a while and He performed as a duo with the Dutch jazz pianist Bert van den Brink. There was velvet tenderness in the tunes.
