GINO VANNELLI

& the CM Jazz ensemble

Wolfgang Braun

1. People Gotta Move
2. Venus Envy
3. Storm at Sunup goes over into Mama Coco
4. The River Must Flow
5. Living Inside Myself

Each song is choosen by the students and Gino had nothing to do with that except for "Living Inside Myself". In between all songs Gino introduces the arrangers and told them to come on the stage and there Gino did a short interview with each arranger. And Gino made them tell to the audience why they choose that particular song and they had to tell a little bit about themselves. Where they come from and why they are at the Conservatory of Maastricht??? Real fun and educational but also relaxed and Gino tried to let go of their shyness and made them feel good and appreciated.

Here is a list with names of all Musicians and Arrangers who were on stage with

REACTIONS:

A few words from the editors dated 30 September 2007:
we were in The seventh heaven of musical delight. The most super kicking unique Gino Vannelli concert with young music students of the Maastricht Conservatory with their Great teacher and conductor Wolfgang Braun. The Master GINO VANNELLI showed us all, music lovers, a piece of quality and fun at the same time which goes beyond good and amazing And the "Kids" were so honoured to play with GINO VANNELLI and with our poor English we cannot express the good vibes in the air in spite of a bad rainy day somewhere in Belgium close to the Dutch border.

The Kimpel concert-hall was cosy and the sound was super good and The concert-hall exploded with enthusiasm, passion, music and admiration. The applause was fantastic and the respect for Gino Vannelli and His work went again to a higher level. The way He interacted with the "Babies" as He called them was great to feel and to see.

We could not believe the set list, there were songs we never ever heard live on stage and with such a big group of Musicians. We counted 11 musicians and a conductor. Gino let the young men choose 6 of His songs and 1 He did Himself if we understand everything well and when we think back now... So many impressions on this glorious day in Belgium.

All musical pieces, really musical works of art, took more minutes than a "normal" song length... The 7 songs took more than an hour so you can imagine how long the duration of 1 song was. Still the show was over in a flash... After the 4th song they changed the grand-piano player and Gino sang "Living Inside Myself" with the piano-player you see at the front picture of the soundcheck slide show... His name is Lodewijk van der Pol, Lodewijk is an arranger too... A very talented young man, he plays the grand-piano and is also an arranger. This young piano player was so dedicated to play "Living Inside Myself" the right way and with his heart, AND HE DID... Lodewijk had to study very hard. Gino's voice was as usual divine and went through our bones till we got big thick goose-bumps and every part of this concert was a tear filler and we were moved to tears all the time...

"Living Inside Myself" : A young talented grand-piano player, a very young talented percussion player who played the bongos and a super good talented young sax player who also played the clarinet + GINO VANNELLI ofcourse and a masterpiece is born again.

The leadership, the discipline, the teacher in Gino Vannelli and let's not forget the perfectionist at the same make the results of such a concert so satisfying... For the musicans but also for the audience and we could feel the deep respect for Gino Vannelli and wolfgang Braun. And everybody talked about the talented young men on stage........ Also the sound man and John the tourmanager worked very hard to get everything right in time.

When they started "STORM AT SUNUP" and this beauty flows over into "MAMA COCO" we were so hooked and honest-to-God we could not believe our ears what we heard, bizarre, swinging, overwhelming and Gino's voice during "STORM AT SUNUP" was so breathtaking and pure... This felt like pure music... golden voice and a complete musical work of art. A once in a lifetime event which will not happen again, but that's just our guess... We cannot believe fans of Gino Vannelli's music missed this concert, thank God Donja and Carlos were there and Wil and Rob and Werner and His Friend Jürgen and many more who will confirm our feelings about this concert.

And let's not forget Gino's humor, He joked around and told funny stories when and where He wrote certain songs and in what situations... too funny for words and the audience laughed many times and in a wild way! We hope Gino tells the story about writing "Mama Coco" one day when you are in the audience of a Gino Vannelli concert. We and the audience in Bilzen Belgium keep it for ourselves because when Gino tells His own stories and adventures live on stage it's trully big fun!

Again a Saterday evening to remember where the Master of Music had to adjust without problems and with big pleasure to these young music students who are filled with many talents and we can understand that their families are very proud of them like we are of GINO VANNELLI and His life's work!!!

We hope we will receive all the names of the students so we can list their names for music history in cyber space... Gino Vannelli Himself gave us a set list and a list with names of the Young Arrangers. We will try to get the list complete. More pictures wil come soon...

Ohhh... we have to write one more remark and that is the following:
Thanks to the kind, very kind Director of the Kimpel Mr. Jean Pierre Poesen, thanks for your hospitality and we remember Gino saying a few names of very good and talented Kids in the band but we cannot remember the exact names no more... Sorry Guys, it's the age thing... But we remember Gino mentioned the Drummer for sure and now we see his name on the list from Mr. Jean Pierre Poesen who was so kind to e-mail us this list of names of the Musicians. The Drummer's name is Nils Plum... And here is his picture:

When more memories come back we will write it overhere... WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAY, WHAT A SUPER KICKING COOL CONCERT, WHAT A FANTASTIC MUSIC, WHAT A TREAT, WHAT A GREAT PEOPLE, WHAT A KICK, WHAT AN ENTHUSIASTIC AUDIENCE, WHAT A SUPPORTIVE FANS AND THE MOST IMPORTANT THE JOY OF MUSIC...
GINO VANNELLI'S MUSIC!!!
The editors B&T

P.S.:
By the way after reading the newspaper review which is pretty positieve for a Dutch reviewer, yes really! In spite of about two mistakes and a bit negative part about WILD HORSES we are happy somebody did some writing about this Super GINO VANNELLI spectacle. We are different people, we know but we really deeply loved this version of Gino Vannelli 's WILD HORSES... A kind of big band wild jazzy swinging WILD HORSES which grabbed us immediately and we were totally with our heads and hearts into this musical work of art!!!

English/Engels: An e-mail from Wil and Rob S. from Utrecht, the Netherlands dated Sunday 30 September 2007 with the subject: Gino in Bilzen.

Hello Barend & Trees.
Are you also still in a drunken fit? After such a super great day yesterday !!!!

We thought it was really super top !!

After quite a long ride we arrived in Bilzen in the afternoon, in the meanwhile we thought to collect our tickets and guess what? We walked into YOU two and GINO... And that we could be at the soundcheck... only this already made the day very special to us!!!

And than the concert... Really, really super !!! So fantastic that we were able to be there. This has to be experienced to be believed for sure !!! So fun with the students from Maastricht and also to hear songs Gino will not select very often for His performances like Mama Coco. And also the explanation of Gino how and when he wrote this Mama Coco song ha, ha.

The special attention Gino gave to the students in between the songs made it all even more special. It must have been a great experience for the students too !!!! And after the concert Gino made some time for his fans... Where do we get such a nice treatment ???

Again it was a Gino concert where the positive energie splashed into the audience !!! Gino thank you so much for this day !!!!

Barend and Trees, very nice to see you two again !!!!
Good luck with the site !!! Love, Rob & Wil.

An E-mail dated Thursday 4 October 2007 from Werner in Germany who was in Bilzen, Belgium with his Friend Jurgen. The subject of the e-mail is: Do you see and remember all the happy faces and feelings after the concert???????

This is my Bilzen experience and report:
Well Bilzen was very special and of course unique.
I´m shure that we´ll never see and hear that setlist again.
Gino and his Babies did an outstanding show and that Babies will be the future of many orchestras around the world. GIno teached them perfect. In the interviews one can feel all the respect they have for the Master of Music and how exciting it was for them to get his spirit of composing, songwiting and arrangement.

GIno was a perfect host and singer in one person. We´ve enjoyed his inspirated interviews and jooking style as the leader of that event.

His voice was not of this world (again). My favourite was "The evil eye" i´ll never forget. It would be a good idea to use it for the next concerts together with "Nightwalker" LOL Maybe one time we´ll be allowed to enjoy that if heaven wants.

Before and after the show we enjoyed to meet all the people we know now cause of that big "Gino Thing" over the years, especially Ron and Wil, Donia and Carlos, John "THE STAFF" and of course you Trees and Barend.

Do you see and remember all the happy faces and feelings after the concert? well this makes our lifes shining and remarkable and unforgetable.

Finally i´m not shure if he told us the real truth about "Mama Coco" What do you think? only the best wishes and hugs to the crazy people. Werner.

I´ll send the photographs on CD soon.

Hé dat klonk gaaf, STORM AT SUNUP, YESS!!! We zaten lekker vooraan.

" We hebben besloten; GINO WE BELIEVE YOU AND WE BELIEVE IN YOU, ALWAYS!!!

Time flies when your having fun......

English/Engels: An e-mail from Donja and Carlos in Capelle aan den IJssel, the Netherlands dated Wednesday 3 October 2007 with the subject: Gino in Bilzen (Photos will follow soon).

Hi Barend & Trees.
Well... Well... What a crazy week. This time we were wakened very rough out off our Gino drunken state of mind and the whirl of excitement was broken off by the normal daily worries. Aaarrrggghhhhhhhh!

But I am going to rewind the tape to this FANTASTIC concert on 29-09-2007 in Bilzen of Gino and His Babies or better said His young students.

We, us, Carlos and me, went to Hasselt first that Saterday afternoon. I wanted to go to Bilzen first and see if something was happening there already but Carlos did not want to go back to Hasselt if we first went to Bilzen. Oh well... So first Hasselt. I jumped into a few shops first, yeah something I cannot help... After that we went to a pizzaria for dinner and when we left I asked Mario the pizza baker: "We go to a Gino Vannelli concert, do you know Him?" He had to think about this very, very long but no he did not know Gino Vannelli. I still cannot understand that... Well, we know Him and that's the most important.

When we arrived in Bilzen we heard a part of the soundcheck. Wow!!! The sounds were cool, STORM AT SUNUP, YESSSS!!! The older songs sounded super. I was convinced that they made new songs together with the students. Nooooo... A while lateron we saw Barend and He told us that the students were allowed to choose 7 Gino Vannelli songs and create new arrangements. WHAT A GREAT IDEA. Well this promised big surprises.

We had cosy front row seat. But first there was a piano player with the name Frank Giebels who played lovely, but hey we came to see and hear Gino....

After a break of half a hour the party could start and yeahhh it was a big party! And immediately the fireworks exploded with PEOPLE GOTTA MOVE. In between the songs Gino called the students on stage to let them tell their story about why they choose that particular song. Their was also a mix created of STORM AT SUNUP and MAMA COCO, sooooo COOL! The story behind the writing of MAMA COCO, and no I am not going to blad about this... Was too funny for words! WHAT A HUMOUR!!!

We all talked about it after the concert "do we believe him?" We decided:
GINO WE BELIEVE YOU AND WE BELIEVE IN YOU, ALWAYS!!!

It's such a beautiful thought that this young students choose the old songs except for VENUS ENVY. Songs which are 30 years old and timeless and will never ever die!!! And it does NOT matter in what way these songs are arranged or sung, it will always be TOP songs. And I cannot think of anybody else who did this except for Gino Vannelli.

LIVING INSIDE MYSELF was incredible wonderful and what a talent that young piano player Lodewijk. And VENUS ENVY was beautiful too in the way they performed it. And this made me happy because they choose a new song too. Gino is always looking into the future and he is always in for new things and does not want to hang or to live in the past. But how they performed this all was very unique. We will not see and hear this for a second time. The sounds were perfect and Gino's in top shape voice, as always, turned, worked flexed and extended with the new arrangements very smooth like He did sing this new arrangements already forever.... And also our compliments to Wolfgang the expressive and enthusiastic conductor, what a collaboration!

As dessert we got WILD HORSES to close the party. And like always times flies by and the end is there too soon, much too soon. Time flies when your having fun...

After the concert Gino came into the concert-hall for His fans and that made them very happy. After kisses and pictures my evening could not get bad for sure! He said that He wanted to check out His Babies but suddenly more people walked into the concert-hall so Gino keeps on talking, taking pictures and shaking hands.... He stays so patient and so friendly like always.

When He really left the building, we had some drinks with Werner and His Friend Jürgen and we had great after-fun and joy. And lateron Barend and Trees joined us too. We were so very happy that we were there at that time. The long ride home was no problem at all, we played Gino very loud, sing along and drive..... Before we knew it we were home again.

But now we have a rough time. We do not know a new date yet for a new Gino concert in the future. We are so used to Gino concerts now. We have to detox and rehabilitate in a very heavy way. But we have good hopes for next year when the new cd is finished. This new cd has to be promoted too... Till that time we have to be happy with the photos and the beautiful memories, His music and let's not forget your GREAT website. And all together it's A LOT!!! There are people on this planet who are already fan for more than 30 years and they still did not see Gino live on stage or didn't shake His hands or even kissed...

GINO, SUPER BIG THANKS FOR YOUR BEAUTIFUL MUSIC, YOUR TIME AND YOUR ATTENTION!!!
We are very blessed also thanks to you two BAREND AND TREES!!! YOU TWO ALSO BIG THANKS!!!

We hope to meet you soon again... Love, Donja and Carlos.

Nederlands/Dutch: Een e-mail van Jean Pierre Poesen, Direkteur van theater de Kimpel uit Bilzen, België, Dinsdag 2 Oktober 2007 met het onderwerp: Gino Vannelli in Bilzen.

Dag,

Hartelijke groeten, Jean Pierre Poesen

English/Engels: An e-mail from Jean Pierre Poesen, managing Director of theater the Kimpel in Bilzen, Belgium, Tuesday 2 October 2007 with the subject: Gino Vannelli in Bilzen.

Hello,
For us it's absolutely no problem that you use our logo and that you make a link to our web site on your web page about the Bilzen Gino Vannelli concert. I, myself think that the concert was very successful. As well as the contribution of the CM JazzEnsemble from Maastricht as the great contribution of Gino Vannelli was really superb. I think this was an unforgetable moment in time. The way the songs were arranged was just brilliant. Especially when you think about this and consider that it were still young students... And when I can say something straight from my heart: " They show up well and made a good impression". The way we heard Gino Vannelli's songs was really worth while and it will never ever be heard again in that way. Only because of the one time unique concert it will be unforgatable for everyone who was there at that moment.

Gino and His musicians deserve a big pat on the back for this concert. Together with the whole audience I deeply enjoyed it. Very nice that you two were there too and maybe till next time... Kind regards, Jean Pierre Poesen.

Groeten!, Ivo

English/Engels: An e-mail from Ivo de Loo from Limburg in the south of the Netherlands dated 2 October 2007 with the subject: GINO VANNELLI BILZEN

PART 1:
Hey Barend and Trees,
No, we did not meet on Saterday but I know who you are now! I had a seat in front of the woman of an optician who came from Rotterdam-south, and she knew you two. She pointed to you two. (If I remember well her husband was behind you two on one of the front rows...) Next time we maybe have a better chance to meet!

I think it was a good performance. It was very surprising to hear those songs which Gino did not play for many, many years.
(As far as I know), and the arrangments were very interesting. And I also loved the lay-out of the show, very nice. (Call the arrangers on stage and the short interviews, etc...) Oh well, when the sound is not that perfect after two days of rehearsals we absolutely do not mind! somebody made recordings also sound recordings but I could not get any recordings sofar. There will be a review in the newspaper today, I did not read it yet but I will mail you a newspaper for sure! And I will mail you the newspaper from last Wednesday too. And it's all free of charge because I don't want you to have any costs. Herewith I e-mail you a few pictures, it's a pity not all the pictures are good... Greetings and maybe till next time! Ivo.

An e-mail from Cyndi in Pittsburg the USA dated Tuesday 20 October 2007 with the subject: stories

Hello Barend and Trees,
Sending a BIG thank you to you and to all the Euro fans for sending you pictures and sharing their stories about the recent shows. I especially enjoyed reading about the concert at the conservatory.

What an honor and a once in a life time opportunity for the music students to be able to work with and have a great mentor such as Gino Vannelli!!! I'm sure the experience was just as gratifying and rewarding for Gino as it was for these bright young musicians who without a doubt became inspired to excel even more. I wish I could have been there especially to hear Storm at Sunup and The Evil Eye!!! I miss Gino's live performances way too much!!

Now perhaps is it just my imagination, but doesn't the young saxophone player with the black glasses resemble Francois D'Amour??
Thanks again, Cyndi

(kvh)

Gino Vannelli and His swinging Babies

It's a very remarkable contrast. In june 1987 Gino Vannelli was listed with his hit Wild Horses at number 7 of the top ten between worldstars like Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson and Crowded House. In downtown Bilzen at the cultural building the Kimpel Gino Vannelli is programmed between Limbomania, the Smulpapen and the Schedelgeboorten. From big stadiums and concert-halls to a cultural building with adjoining sports-hall is a little step for Vannelli. "At the moment I really love to do this and share my knowlegde with these talented students".

After the great piano-player Frank Giebels warmed up the audience in the concert-hall it's time for Vannelli and his students. However the ravages, the wear and tear of time did not go by the charmer of old times, his voice sounds still as fresh as in the time period of his first debut LP Powerful People.

Vannelli starts with the most well known track of this LP, which is abused at the moment by the ANWB, People Gotta Move And it sounds not exactly the same as the 40 and 50 year old people in the audience will remember but that's the meaning of it all. Vannelli told a few students to write new jazz-arrangements of his hits. One by one Gino Vannelli calls the young arrangers on stage and they have to explain why and how...

And once in a while this even causes a little self-abuse ("When did you came in touch with my music Wolfgang" or "why do you think Mamma Koko is my best song Mark") the atmosphere is very cosy and homy which you will not feel very often at a Gino Vannelli concert. perceptible the singer enjoys this great excellent work of his students, he names them Babies in a sweet way... Highlight of the evening is the song Living Inside Myself. Lodewijk van der Pol took this song through the wringer. "You know how to make life difficult for a Singer and how to rack my brains Lody!" Vannelli smiles. And because of the fact that this student is also an extreme talented piano-player, he is also allowed to accompany Vannelli musically. And however this song with these new arrangements is totally and completely turned up side down, the singer knows with a little bit of pain to safe himself.

Not all Vannelli songs with new arrangements do it well. For instance the light sexy, close base vibes of the original Wild Horses does not feel the same in the jazz version. But there is no doubt about that we need more of this so we need a following up. But we think Vannelli keeps it by this one time.

Who is the next ex-worldstar who wants to share his or hers knowledge with the youth. Maybe next year Michael Jackson and Students in Bilzen?
